The Archos 101 looks interesting

@catfish the Archos 101 has a multitouch screen.

I was all but sold on the Velocity Micro Cruz Tablet when it was announced. It had everything I need(except the webcam) for a what I thought was a very good price. Well, Archos just killed the Cruz. A 10in tablet for the same price as the 7in cruz with a faster processor(this is an assumtion since we don't know what the cruz has), android 2.2 and a webcam.
The Archos is number one on my list now. The samsung is a nicer device overall but the price along with it being tied to carrier and data plan equals a no go for me.

I really want an Android tablet and the Archos 101 is a enticing product.

I do remember though that the stock Android Implementations do not "see" ad hoc wifi networks. This would be a deal breaker for me, as I couldn't tether with my phone.

Anyone with the earlier versions of Archos Android tablets know if they support wifi tethering with phones?

I for one will be buying an Archos 101, and probably pre ordering on Amazon at the end of the month. I might also get the Archos 70 with the 250GB HDD. I have to think that over in the next few weeks.

Hoping this purchase will be able to replace my netbook for my work needs.
I was heavy on the Samsung GT, but when I found out you have to get it through a carrier I quickly ran away from that idea.

I will also also keep a look out for the Cisco Cius, although that will be a pricey tab. They said price should be less than $1,000, so more expensive than an iPad! And they have no release date for the near future.

So for the time being Archos has the clear advantage in my eyes.

For what it's worth my contacts within Cisco are telling me that the CIUS will be out next year. Been trying to con some of my friends to buy one for me at Cisco internal pricing. So far nobody wants to do it... :(

If you will use the device for music a lot- avoid it. Archos = sucky sound quality due to euro sound cap and poor audio gain.

Fourth post about this, but I feel obligated for audio fans not to be duped by these devices. Archos needs to get the point through poor sales, but they have been cranking these out with this problem for four years now.

Audio fans, stay FAR away.

Glad you mentioned this. I had no idea since I've avoided them in the past due to their policy of charging for codecs. Now I'm not so excited about this after all.

I have owned three of their devices. Before the cap rule that they strictly adhere to now, Archos had great sound quality. Gmini 402 was their last great device, five years ago. All have had sucky audio quality since then.

My Archos 5 is used only for video, but my Gmini has no equal (except Cowan) for sound quality.

only 256 ram, gingerbread upgrade?

It should work, but the main problem will be how much device app storage the Archos devices have. There is a mean rumor that they only have 220mb free and use a 512mb rom:

OS
Stock apps
220 megs free for apps

If this is true, there is probably no way these devices will get 3.0, since the rom is too small. Incredible should be ok, since the 512mb rom is only used for OS and stock roms- no app space, so plenty of update room.

I ordered one, too. I will cancel if the low space is confirmed. Apps2sd helps, but still parts of the apps are installed to the device. Adds up real quick with Google Earth and the newer games.

That is the rom you are talking about, not the ram. The archos 101 comes with either an 8gb or 16gb flash so there is plenty of room. The ram is the memory the tablet uses for running apps.

The rom is where the device app space is- not the flash (all apps install to at least some of that space).

Example:

NOVA puts 15mb on the device space and 400mb on the sd card
Google Earth puts 15mb on both
Most 3D games average 10mb on device and the rest on sd card

Especially if a gamer, it does not take long to fill up 200mb of space (when you do fill this space, it does not matter how much other storage space you have.

Is this how it works on the EVO? Consider that it too has large capacity of internal flash memory PLUS SD card memory. So, is internal memory separate from the ROM or is it included?

Main constraint is the actual device storage for apps. Some devices like Droid and Nexus have just a few hundred megs while some of the Galaxy models have 1.8 gigs. Even though a lot of apps support apps2sd, still some of the app gets installed to the device storage for security and resource reasons.

Newer devices that have flash storage usually put the OS on the rom and device space on flash allocation. Some do not and the new Archos flash devices are an example. This is the only apparent weakness of these devices. Since I will mainly use for book, comic and web viewing, no problem for me. Ok, some gaming too.

So what I think your saying is that the new Gen8 tablets including the 101 have a separate ROM on top of the 8gb to 16gb flash memory, and depending on the ROM size will depend on how many apps you can put on it, even with apps2sd.

I hope that the ROM size is at least greater than the N1, as I would hate to have to compromise between apps on something that is supposed to be a little more than a phone...

Let's hope Archos plays their cards right.
