This phone needs 2.0

See title.

I have little doubt that the battery problems would be solved by bumping out of cupcake. I actually like Touchwiz, but it seems to be causing a ton of problems. Once we get 2.0 from Samsung, I don't think we can rely on it to fix the little things. It's time to bump it up to stock ourselves. I'm no ROM cooker, but I'm willing to try. Now that we have persistent root, what next? How do we start making ROMs for this thing?

This is pure speculation but-

No other phone runs Android 2.0 despite clear demand for it. The hackers took about a week to put it on the G1. Officially done, it should take even less time. The Sense UI with 2.1 has been leaked too, but not officially released. It would take all of 3 seconds to roll it out. My guess is that Motorola has an exclusivity deal until the end of the year. In that case we'd see 2.0 by the middle of January.

i too am a touchcheesewiz fan and think 2.0 plus wiz 2.0 will be a sweet thing.
but if we dont get it by the middle of january and the only 2 phones that have 2.0 are on verizon, then i will lose all faith in google's "open" preaching.

i have a worry that if we dont get 2.0 we may not see "special" roms for the beholds like you see on the G1 and mytouch because of popularity. time will tell, and in that time i will set aside some money to jump the android ship.

I also think that verizon worked out some deal with google for exclusivity. My problem with that is that tmobile should have worked out a similar deal first, the one thing tmobile had going for them for a while was the fact that they were the only carrier that had android,we've all seen how well exclusivity can work for a carrier(iphone). Right now they have the most android phones of any carrier, they need to hurry up and release 2.0 as soon as its available.

I would guesstimate that 90% of the issues with the behold 2 have to do with android 1.5. Once were running 2.0 we will have better battery life, google nav, and the best android camera phones available at the moment.

Why dident this phone which I own just come out with 2.0???Seems like another T-Mobile blunder:thinking:

Yeah i know it seems that way and with tmobile who knows, but just look at the fact that 2.0 sdk has been available for a month now and still no update. When 1.6 sdk was released the update was available within a week and a half, i really think its exclusive to verizon for now, hopefully well get a xmas gift from tmobile

As I understand it, with the Android devices the SDK version is initially set by the manufacturer (HTC, Motorola, Samsung) as opposed to T-Mobile, and the biggest holdup seems to be upgrading the manufacturer-specific customizations to Android 2.0. I read somewhere that the Sense UI, Motoblur, and TouchWiz were not immediately compatible with Android 2.0 become of some coding choices that were made which apparently are not forward-compatible with 2.0. So once Samsung releases a version of TouchWiz that is happy with Android 2.0, then perhaps they will work with T-Mobile to push out an update.

I may be making all this up, doesn't seem to explain the G1 or MyTouch though, if those are running vanilla Android then there should be no reason why they wouldn't already have been updated to 2.0.

Just a couple of thoughts.

Sense UI 2.1 has been leaked and ported over to the G1 and Mytouch though, so we know it is done. There has to be some sort of deal in place preventing 2.0 being released elsewhere.

i wouldn't doubt that samsung is holding it up so they can get their crappy UI setup on it. personally i cant wait for a custom ROM and get rid of the samsung crap for good. Cube is the most worthless thing i have ever seen.

I'm very anxious to get mine so I can start working on it, even though I don't know where to begin.

Personally, I like Touchwiz, but they threw the baby out with the bathwater to do it.

cant argue that, its gimmicky:thinking: but after a few days i ended up using it to free up home screen real estate (press the cube and use the shorts @ the bottom).

the cube button and the use of the UltimateFavs app i now only use one home screen. the other two are just wallpaper pics of my son.:D

Frankly I don't think he knew what he was talking about, but I was on the phone Saturday with customer support regarding a voicemail problem and I asked if he knew when 2.0 was coming out. He said he didn't know but said that 1.6 was already being sent out to the phones and that I should get a message about it soon (when I tried to do an upgrade through the upgrade option in the menu, it didn't see anything new available). The fact that I haven't heard about this from anyone else or anywhere else makes me believe he was confused... but it would be nice if just for us getting Google navigation.

If you were talking to a T-Mobile rep you can assume he was thinking generic Android and assumed since the other phones were getting 1.6 that Behold II should get 1.6 as well. I would hope they would skip 1.6 since it would delay 2.0.
