Hi

Wondering if someone has had a similar experience, I hope you can assist.

I'm Unable to install an automatic system software update from htc.com on my rooted Desire with Froyo 2.2
Update was successfully downloaded and starts to install, progress bar reaches the 25% mark than the phone goes into root mode with the message;

ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.0.7
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed
Installation aborted.

Otherwise the phone works just fine.

Any input would be appreciated.

Rooting a rom is customising it. Official updates don't work as they cannot update the official code, as it has since changed by the rooting process.

If you want to keep up to date with froyo releases, I would suggest trying out some custom roms, which come from recommended developers.

Have a look in the rooting forum.

Thanks Danfrance,

Comments noted.
What reputable sites would you recommend for HTC Desire ROMs?
Would these OTA updates exist in ROM formats? unlikely directly from htc.com, correct?

Kind regards.

XDA is where most developers post their ROMs, the first post in a ROM thread will include the version the ROM is based on

Indeed.

Desire Android Development - xda-developers

Look for threads starting [rom]

In regards to updates, often developers will release a new version of their rom, including the update.

One thing to note, there are 2 types of custom roms.

Sense based roms (created from official releases from HTC) and AOSP roms, these are vanilla i.e. no Sense, so look out for this.

EddyOS, you are right, it takes some bravery :)
I assume ROMs have to be device specific (Desire in this case...) correct?
Wouldn't the update ROMs be the safest and most relevant to the device?
What if a ROM is corrupted or doesn't install correctly, can we revert back/restore to normal, what are the risks?

Hi Dan

looked on the site and under the GSM list at the bottom is the VM ROM. If I wanted to re-install it is it simply a case of connecting the phone to the PC and running the file? The only reason I ask is in case my phone gets knackered and I need to do so [or if VM do release 2.2 and everyone raves about it lol].

Hi,

I'm sorry I don't even know where you're looking.

@ Dan,

Yes I am, been using it since it's release...seriously good ROM and seeing as I don't use the camera on my phone I can live without it until it's sorted. Quadrant scores over 1500 with no tweaks other than what the ROM comes with

That is pretty fast. What do you think to the new sense? Much of an improvement to the old one? What are the key differences?

Hi Eddy, I am on 2.2 and used this ROM Shipped ROMs

The HTC Desire I got from VM would boot up with their logo screen and that is all of VM I saw apart from the homepage was set to their site.

Did you need a gold card to get onto the 2.09.405.8 ROM you're on now? If not, you're on a stock Desire so the next OTA would be 2.10.405.2

That's branded. So what state are you in now? rooted? Unbranded? and what do you want to do? Return to VM stock just incase?

New Sense is better than the old one in a speed sense - the flip clock has no lag, flipping between home screens is fast and it just seems to work. I don't look into the ins and outs but the ROM does have govonors running to scale down the CPU when screen is off...I'm still on over 50% battery by late evening (less on weekend when I actually use the phone). This is with weather/Facebook/Twitter syncing every hour and email on push for 2 Gmail accounts

I used a Goldcard and got the 2.10.405.2 ok. My problem is if my phone goes pearshaped how do I re-install the VM ROM?

It is unbranded but not rooted and yes it is just in case I need to return to VM.

You would connect the phone to the PC in fastboot mode and run the RUU from teh PC.

However, if your bootloader is now newer, you will have to use the downgrade tool first and then run the ruu
