So I'm a new Captivate owner and want to try and root my phone and perhaps try bugless beast. For the life of me I cannot get it to boot into the recovery manager. Every thing I read says hold down the volume up\volume down and power keys. I can't quite find the right mojo to get it going. Is there some sort of secret sequence you need to user to get it to recovery manager?
Thanks

Hi, I have spent the last hour trying to get my Samsung Captivate into recovery mode. I have tried what seems like hundreds of different combination of power plus volume buttons with different lengths of time, but none have worked. Does any one know if there is a way to enter recovery mode from Terminal on a Mac? If so how?

if youre rooted install rom manager and it should work. also i assume you held down both power buttons at the same time and tried it right?

I have heard that some captivates are just broken in this regard and would need to be returned. You should be able to boot into recovery by holding down the volume up, volume down and the power buttons at the same time until you see the white AT&T world phone screen. Thats at least how I do it on my phone.

You can force it to reboot into recover mode using ADB. I believe its "adb reboot recovery". You will need to install ADB and you need to turn on the USB debugging option on your phone.

The correct combo is volume up and down and power (at the same time), when the AT&T spash screen appears for the second time let go of only the power button and you should see the recovery menu. If you can not get to the recovery menu using the key combo, this is the only key combo for Captivate, the other combo is for a different Samsung phone, do not do any modifying to your phone, take it back to AT&T and swap it for one that has the button combo or you risk bricking your phone. There are a batch of phones made about mid August that do not have the key combos. Without being able to use the key combo to get into recovery or download mode, you will eventually brick during modding. There are a lot of people that have had to get there phones replaced because they couldn't boot into recovery or download mode.

I have the same issue as OP, and this is the only solution to get into recovery or download mode.

Tell me about it. I got my Captivate when they 1st came out and within 2-3 hours had rooted, flashed, swapped kernels, ran the i9000 roms and so on. So when I could not get my wife's captivate, which I got about a month ago, into download mode with the buttons, I knew it was not an issue of not knowing how to press the buttons, but something wrong with the phone. However the adb command worked. I have since flashed the l;eaked froyo and the 2e recovery to her phone and can now get into recovery mode with the 3 button combo everytime.

Glad to hear it worked for you as well
