1. It's not for a speed boost.

2. I think so, but depends what you want to do with your phone. Learn what it is and what you can do once you have before doing it.

3. Yes, with a reflash or the app you use.

4. You don't need to be rooted to do that.

5. Yes, but you will also need to use ADB. The simplest method is to use an app but recommend learning how to use ADB.

6. The same way you would without rooting.

I know you said asked specific to your device but have given generic answers.

If he is on SW version VS740ZVB then he will have to use the Universal Androot app way because the old ADB command line way doesnt work with that SW verison.

You can backup and move around contacts by going to the phone app and then pressing menu and pressing "Import/Export".

You can root using "Universal root" - link

Rooting wont exactly speed up the phone, but you can install a custom ROM (Probably Tridents - Link) to make it way faster.

One cool thing you can do is use the app called "Barnacle" to tether. This means your phone can output a WiFi network that your computer can use to get online with anyware you have 3g on your phone. It docent require any extra subscription from verizon.

1. If I root a phone, is speed really noticeable?
Rooting by itself doesn't do anything for speed. But it does make it possible to start doing things (flashing a new recovery, installing custom mods, overclocking, etc.) that will boost speed. These changes, at least on the Ally, are pretty noticeable.
2. Is it worth it to root a phone?
I think so. You don't lose anything (apart from your warranty) for doing it, and the risks are pretty minimal, as long as you're not flying completely blind.
3. If I root a phone can I unroot it?
Pretty much. You can flash what's called the "Stock" ROM onto the phone, which restores most settings to what they were before. Supposedly, there's still some way "they" can tell it had been rooted, but I have no clue about that.
4. If I want to unroot a phone, is there a way to backup contacts?
The contacts are stored by Google, off the phone. They'll be there when you're back up.
5. Can a phone be rooted through Windows 7?
Good question. No idea. But you can download an app called Universal Androot that handles the rooting for you, independent of a computer.
6. If I root a phone is there a way to transfer contacts?
See question 4. In short, you won't need to worry.

Well, I am trying to flash the trident 0.3 ROM. I copied it to my root SD card folder (which is I'm assumimg the SD card itself with no sub folders?)

and this is what that folder looks like:

http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/3103/folderandroid.jpg

,BUT when I load ROM mananger and pressed Install ROM from SD card, and it wants me to browse for a the ROM. I can't find it, it doesn't show up? I see all subfolders, but nothing relating to "boot.img".

Help?

Edit:

I placed the .ZIP file inside of the SD root folder and was able to try and install it. When ROM manager reboots the phone, it doesnt take me to this screen:

It just shows the LG logo, then flashes the android green guy with an exclamation point, the the Verizon wireless logo and goes back to my default OS?

EDIT NUMBA TOO!:

NEVA MIND!

Yeah, I figured it all out :)

EDIT3:

No I did not.

The Steps I took:

1. Copied Velocity_0.3.zip
2. Extracted
3. Replaced theme to stock
4. Re-zipped
5. Coped to SD card
6. Downloaded ROM Manager
7. "Install ROM from SD Card"
8. Selected Velocity
9. Check both options
10. Rebooted and nothing...

EXACT STEPS I TOOK

Edit 4:

Finally got it to work, now how do I replace the theme to stock android?

You need to re-flash the recovery.
