Root Rooting 101?

It would be nice if someone made a sticky for new users who want to root their phone and are intimidated by doing it. It would be nice to have everything in one spot that will show them how to root, what apps to use or links to zip files etc. and everything in that
ballpark. It would save new users (like myself ) from bricking their phones over installing something wrong and it saves time so your not searching threw 10,000+ threads. Just a thought.

It is the second thread in this forum. A few of the links on it are outdated though. But honestly...you caught me in a verbose mood. So I'm going to help you out. I'm going to do a quick writeup with links on a start-to-finish stock to custom rom with theme. I will post the link to that thread as soon as I'm done pal.

Thanks! Just what im looking for!

Cheers.

I have a quick question about rooting and the X. If I root, will I still receive future OTA updates. I don't plan on running custom ROMs any time soon. I just want to have root access and an otherwise stock device. Any help would appreciated.

DroidEris1981,

Welcome to the X threads :D.

Yep, you'll (actually, we'll) get the OTA updates as long as you haven't explicitly turned them off.

Cheers!

Scary Alien,
Thanks for the good info!
FYI, the 2.2 sbf was released last night and it does work if you ever need it. I rooted my X the other day and I wanted to try the unroot option and things on my phone got a bit screwy after the unroot process. So, I used the sbf and I was back to pristine day one stock in less then 10 minutes.

Nice...(saw several folks that had to use it or were able to use it to resurrect their phones). I grabbed the SBF a little while ago just to keep in my back pocket (just in case, you know...). I saw the XDA thread from last night got "moved" (probably closed/deleted).

Haven't ever had to use it (plan on keeping it that way for a while ;)).

Love my X...its been awesome so far. Just lurking in the X root forums so I can learn some stuff :p.

Cheers and be careful! :)
