Android Helps Sony Ericsson Boost Profits - PCWorld

Last 3 paragraphs say it all

Competition among the makers of Android-based smartphones is very tough and shipping more than its competitors will be a tall order for Sony Ericsson.

HTC and Samsung are in an extremely strong position, according to Ben Wood, director of research at CCS Insight. To make its goal even achievable, Sony Ericsson will have to add a lot of software resources, according to Wood. So far the company has been playing catch-up to the other vendors, he said.

Owners of Sony Ericsson's Android-based smartphones are still waiting for an upgrade from Android 1.6 to 2.1. On Thursday, the company said its plan is still to start rolling out the update toward the end of October. Sony Ericsson still maintains that its own additions to Android are more important than having the latest version of the operating system.

Really????? I dunno about that...

I used Timescape all of once, then removed my accounts from it. It's cute.. but to me it's nothing but a novelty and "cute" is all it had going for me personally; not enough to want to use it. I far prefer to have twitter and facebook apps than use Timescape.

Mediascape is ok, it gets me where I need to go for music and videos, but it's not stellar or anything and I can think of a hundred ways to improve on it.

I understand that Sony wants to find an "edge" in competition via proprietary software (Timescape/Mediascape) and that's fine, but if your proprietary pieces are running on outdated software and as a result your consumer base can't customize the phone/OS to their liking, they WILL go elsewhere regardless of those components.

This seems elementary. I'm not sure how they can possibly overlook it.

I think they underestimate the Android users.

After reading this article, it just confirms a statement I made on this site a few weeks back. Memory serves me right, I said something like this; "SE pushed out the x10 and all of the 1.6 OS phones for one reason. They need money! They do not care about us or when we will if we will get what they promised. They had no intentions of keeping their promise to begin with, so now it is a matter of feeding us lies or what ever to keep the masses from complaining to hard, while they are malking a profit off us for buying their outdated phones. the x10 may see an update, but if we do it will be the last one we ever get. the X12 is the one that Sony is actually preparing to hit the streets working with a current OS, with all of the extras. We on the x10 will just slide into oblivion"....... Key words here folks, we are SE cash cows! How does that make you feel? Makes me sick!

Ok... I havent read the entire article....
But I do see some sense in whats written.....

Think of it this way...I have not used a 2.1 phone so far...

Now if i get the update but do not know (Not all users frequent this forum ;) ) what apps to buy / download then?

I mean I would certainly want all need-to-have and some nice-to-have goodies shipped or atleast notified officially...

May be SE acknowledges that some of its standard out-of-the-box apps havent found a heart share and wanna take corrective actions....

My Take...

P.S. I read that with the 2.1 my phone gets several Mn colors activated and gets multitouch etc etc. but can some one compile a list (In lay-man terminology) of features and functionality that x10 gets?

I mean we all have been waiting...but is the wait really worth it??

I obtained my x10 by trading a Bold 9700 that I had won. I have a work blackberry, and I really didn't want one for personal use.

So I'm upset that we don't have an upgrade yet, but not as upset as some of you other people who spent hard earned money for it.

Back in 2007 I paid $400 for a Samsung Blackjack 2 and i gave that phone a beating and it keep goes and some parts even work better than my x10.
I'm almost ready to pull it back out. LOL.
