Verizon Insurance Plan

I was lied to by Verizon. When I upgraded I was told that my current 6 dollar plan would cover my phone the same way my old phone was covered. Luckily I called today and found out the truth. They offer a 6 dollar plan that does indeed cover the Droid. It only will cover it for 1 Year. Outside of a year then you are not covered at all. So thinking logically I asked about the 9 dollar plan and was told it does cover you outside of the 1 year warranty. Here comes the stupid part, you are forced to purchase either one of these plans within 30 days of getting the phone even though you are technically covered under the manu warranty for 1 year. So basically you need to pay verizon 108 dollars for a years worth of coverage when your phone is technically already covered. Does anyone else see an issue with this???

The 1 year warranty from Motorola is ONLY for manufacturer defects. The insurance you pay for through Verizon (it is actually from an outside company) covers breakage, water damage, loss, theft, etc...NOT manufacturers defects. Note that there is now an $89.00 deductible as well...

I understand that, my intentions were to keep the 6 dollar plan and switch over to the 9 at the end of the year. But you are unable to do that. They should just offer one plan.

I'm pretty sure it does not cover water damage.
The axtra warranty usually covers rmaln wear and tear. Stuff like that.

One thing I've been meaning to look into is getting insurance on the phone through State Farm. When my laptop was new I got insurance on it, it was less than 35 a year for $1400 worth of coverage. Covered "accidental direct physical loss or damage to the property" and covered everything but war, seizure by customs agents, government destruction, illegal activity, nuclear radiation, insects, or mechanical breakdown.

It's actually really sweet insurance when you think about it. If I have a chance I'll look into it tomorrow and report back...

That list is kinda scary lol. Good idea to seek insurance elsewhere though, I'm off to check with my insurance co that gives me renter's insurance.

Here is a post with a detailed description of the different insurance options: http://androidforums.com/motorola-droid/19581-droid-insurance.html#post125019

The $6 plan covers the phone for as long as you have it on your account for lost/stolen/accidental/etc. It isn't just for the first year as someone stated in this thread. What it doesn't cover is manufacturer's defects after the first year (which I would say is unlikely to happen anyway)

The $8 plan covers lost/stolen/accidental as well as extends the manufacturer's warranty for however long its on your account.

The only benefit to the $8 over the $6 plan is that in the second year if your problem does up end being a manufacturer defect you wouldn't have to pay the deductible. No matter which plan you have, if you lose, have it stolen, or accidentally break it you would be able to replace it by paying the $89 deductible.

I tried to get State Farm to cover mine in Va but they said cell phones are no longer covered. I got him to check twice and no go.

This is from my agent:

I spoke again with our underwriting department, and we don’t insure cell phones. Like I said, we used to, so some people got grand-fathered in, but we no longer do it.

There is a water sensor thingunder the battery that they'll check everytime you take your phone in.

You are talking warranty vs. insurance. If you just have the warranty, and drop your phone in the toilet, you are SOL. If you have insurance, you give them $80, and you get a new one.

The phone retails for $500, so if you lose/damage it on day 1, it's gonna be very costly to replace....

The plan seems to varies city to city, state to state. It is insurance, not a warranty. You get a standard one year warranty that comes from Motorola that covers problems caused by them (ie internal issues, hardware, software). For me the insurance is $7 a month, through a third party company. It covers all and anything that could happen to my phone including water damage. It could catch on fire and i could bring in a pile of melted metal and plastic and get a replacement.

almost all of my phones water sensors were activated in the time i owned them. It just happens. I live in arizona, with nearly no humidity and it just happens. All you need to do is convince them it wasent you. Worked every time for me. Otherwise, find or create other issues ;)

I asked at State Farm to make sure I wasn't losing anything by dropping my Verizon insurance and going for just State Farm. State Farm covers everything that the warranty does not (same as the insurance i was paying Verizon for) for $30 a year. I asked if I lost it or busted it or flushed it or it fell off the boat or my dog eats it or..... and all were covered with no extra $80 for me to pay. I actually told her about the Verizon insurance and she couldnt believe the cost. Not sure if I will regret it later but as of now I am no longer paying Verizon $8 a month extra.
