Hello there, and welcome to the forum and the land of the X10's.

I have an X10 large so I hope the advice that I am giving is correct for your phone as I can't check it out...

My understanding is that you can only get one widget per page on the mini's and as the clock is a widget other than modding your 4 corners for fast access I think that's all you can put on there.

Best apps to start off with imho are Astro file manager, Bluetooth File Transfer, Handcent SMS.

Astro allows you to look around your SD card and manage all the files as you would on a PC with a file manager - move, copy, paste, delete. It also has its own image viewer so you get a little thumbnail on images where as a lot of the other file managers just give you the name (not great when you are trying to arrange 50 different pictures with numbers as their name!)

Bluetooth allows you to send easily to other phones and to use your device to remote view their files and select copy paste them to your sd card. Until you get the update it is the only way you will get files bluetoothed to your device.

Handcent SMS is a really cool texting app but in addition allows you to save MMS pics to your SD card and offers an option for selecting music on your phone to be notification sounds.

I am sure others will chip in but these are three good basics to get under your belt so to speak.

The other thing is when you explore the Android market, only download one app at a time... give it a coupld of hours and check your battery levels. You occaisionally get an app that eats your battery - I tripped up with a battery monitor of all things. So if its all looking OK then go ahead and add another. The three above are pretty tried and tested so you should be fine with them.

Hope it helps and hope you enjoy your new phone.

Oh yes, plus 1 on the ADW just wasn't sure how it ran on the mini's. There is a great little app that goes with it called Home Switcher if you can find it on the market (just recommended it to someone else and they can't find it) It lets you set your default home launcher or easily switch between ADW or SE's stock.

thanks for the replying all

am starting to get my head round using this now, everytime i resolve a problem I love the phone a little bit more :)

I have adw setup and working and looking great

will grab the astro file manager and Handcent SMS

one thing I do see is themes for ADW that are not in the market place but are available free on the net but I don't know how to manually install them
if anyone can help me with this I would be grateful.

but the real challenge of today is to get this connected to my wifi
it just dont want to play ball

it sees my wifi and its encryption i click connect and nothing happens

if you install handcent or another sms app you need to deactivete the buildin sms app, that you do with go to settings > sony ericsson > messaging and untrick notifications and notification vibration and i have also untricked delivery report

if you do not disable it you will get notification from buildin sms app and the new app

no problem....

I hope you will be happy with you device, if you have a problem with it, you can always post here, i believe some1 would help you :D

Aside from the excellent suggestions from rosered, other applications that could be useful for you are: Google Googles and Barcode Scanner.

The first one allows you to search by taking photos (it's not too accurate right now, but it's great to show off your android's capabilities) and the second one is quite useful, as it will enable your phone to download apps, check websites and add contacts by scanning QR Codes.

on my phone there is already a code scanner installed by default
