The desire comes with a news feed widget which is great. You choose what feeds you'd like it to display and it will keep you up to date with what is going on. I have a feed from bbc news, bbc sport, yahoo news and cnet. often provides some interesting reading.
The web browser is so fast and easy to use on the desire the web can provide the rest of the info you need. I have the two train timetables I use bookmarked so i can browse them in seconds of picking up my phone.
Some good info or useful apps are...
1. real calc - a calculator (always handy)
2. convertpad - converts from all sorts of measures into others, used more often than you would imagine.
3. movies - will tell you what is on at the cinema and when, what are the best films, the ones liked by critics and by users.
4. TuneIn Radio - very quickly finds a large number of radio stations including all your local ones.
5. soccer livescores - for me, a crucial app when the footie is on, keeps you updated.
6. uNote - a useful notepad type app (check out springpad, not for me but you may like it)
7. Google maps and Navigation are amazing! You will never get lost again.
8. Tv guide UK lite - handy for checking whats on the box
Hope this helps and sorry if some of it is Uk based.
