Help Android / HTC Hero - slow & frustrating

I have a HTC Hero running Android 2.1

- The phone can be very slow to respond at times. When acting up at it's worst it can literally take 15 seconds for the phone to respond to a dial command out of the phone book.
- When rotating from portrait to landscape it is slow for the screen to respond. (wife's i-phone rotates instantly )

I've read that keeping the text message history cleared helps; I've been staying on top of this along with rebooting on a regular basis.
Don't have many / any programs running in the back ground that much.

This is a company phone and don't want to be the 'whiner' in the company wanting a different model .

BTW - batter life on this things is as bad as my old Treo 800
I have e-mail updates turned back and keep wifi off and gps off as much as possible.
How's the Seidio battery?
Seidio Innocell 1750mAh Extended Battery for HTC Evo 4G, Hero - Phandroid Store

Anything else I can do to improve the performance (without hacking the phone)?

***EDIT***HELP***
Just checked for updates and found a software update (2.31 I think).
Did the update and phone would not boot past the white HTC screen.
Pulled the battery to reboot a couple times and each time it goes further but I'm getting the following error and does not seem to want to come back.
'Sorry - the process com.google.process.gapps has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.'
I have the button option to 'Force Close'.
When I force close it tries to cycle but just returns to the error message.

***HELP***
