Have a look in your settings for mobile and network settings, and turn your data connection on.
Yes, you need to enable the Mobile network, and you also need to make sure your network settings are correct. Tap on Mobile networks, Access Point Names, and ensure you have an APN configured and enabled. If the APN screen is blank, then you don't have an APN server setup yet. Press Menu, Add/New APN, name it and add the proper settings for your network. If you don't know the settings, google "o2 apn settings" to get the info to fill in the fields.

If you have an APN already, tap on it to check the settings and make sure they're correct for your carrier. Remember to press Menu and Save the new or updated APN settings, and make sure the round checkbox is highlighted/enabled.

Once you're connected to the mobile network, you will see icons indicating the type of connection and arrows show if data is moving up or down from/to your phone. You will see 3G, H, E, and G indicating 3G, HSPA, EDGE, and GPRS data connections.
