Root Root isn't Rooting?

So, I'm on my 3rd replacement of my Droid X, and it's finally a "good" one with no problems - So I'm going to root it.

I just attempted it twice, using this method: How to root a Droid X running the official Android 2.2 update

The program tells me "Congratulations, your phone should be rooted!"
Then I disconnect it and reboot it, and look for the "Superuser" app that I'm apparently suppose to have - and it's not there.

Am I doing something wrong?

EDIT: I tried it a 3rd time [in "PC Mode"], and looked closely at the prompt program and what it was saying/doing - It didn't recognize a bunch of stuff, but still told me it [should] have been successful.

EDIT:EDIT: After some searching, apparently "adb" is the phone - and it can't find\recognize it. So I guess THAT is my problem. Any solutions?
I have USB Debugging enabled, and it's in PC Mode... Do I need to have the Android SDK folder in a specific location?

put the phone in media sync mode. that should do the trick.

Ive not seen to many people who could root in "Pc Mode". Also, make sure that all the drivers are downloaded before you hit root. Ive found an easy check is to try and get into your phone's files before you root so that you know the phone and computer are truely connected.

Did that, and it got the "Superuser" app on my phone, but I've decided that I no longer really need\want it to be rooted.
So now I'm clicking "unroot" on RootMyX2.exe and it will load\work up until it says it's just restarting my phone. I let it sit for a good hour (while it was "restarting") and came back with the statusbar still at the same step, well after the phone had restarted. The Superuser app is still there.

Do I need to do a factory reset to get this off of my phone? Has the damage been done?

Figured it out.
"RootMyX2" seems to have a problem with the unrooting feature, so I found a manual'ish way of doing it that worked perfectly for me:

first download a terminal app
I used TERMINAL EMULATOR from the ANDROID MARKET

Then

Open the app (if your using terminal emulator you should see a blue screen with this)

export PATH=/data/local/bin : $PATH
$ $[]

([]this is the grey box)


Type as how its posted WITH SPACES AND CAPTIAL S in Superuser.apk

EXAMPLE
mount(space)-o(space)rw,remount(space)-t(space)ext3(space)/dev/block/mmcblk1p21(space)/system

DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK IM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR PHONE IF IT GETS BRICKED OR HAS ANY TYPE OF DAMAGE TO THE SOFTWARE OR THE PHONE IT SELF WHILE USING THIS METHOD!!!


open your trusty terminal app
you should see a $ symbol, now do the following
- su
now you should see a # symbol
- mount -o rw,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system
- rm /system/app/Superuser.apk
- rm /system/bin/su
- rm /system/bin/busybox
- mount -o ro,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system

Reboot your phone.

You went through all that only to decde you don't want it rooted?

Awe come on man you should give it some time, the app store is a million times cooler once you're rooted. So many more choices at your finger tips, so much more control to be had over your device. Seriously, you really should try some things out before you unroot, it may change your mind.

If in the end you decide rooting truely isn't for you it shouldn't be too hard to unroot. I've never done it, but I remember when everyone was unrooting their 2.1 devices to gear up for the 2.2 OTA update to hit.

I'm just going to figure out what exactly I want from rooting my phone, then how to get what I want - THEN I will root my phone "for good"

Really the biggest thing I want to change on my phone, is the boot-up animation, and my notification bar [I want it to be black, and I want the notification pull-down to not slide all the way down, but instead only slide down to show the current notifications - if that makes sense].
I tried wifi-tethering, and it was pretty terrible [0.40 up, and 0.00 down - I couldn't get anything to recognize the wifi].

So I'm not going to risk bricking my phone, until I completely understand what I am doing and why I am doing it

its pretty hard to brick your phone now with the new 2.2 sbf being out. you would have to be messing with the bootloader to brick it.

wireless tether should work fine as long as you have a good 3G signal.

as far as the notifications shade. i have not seen any themes that drop it only as far as there are notifications.

simply rooting your phone will not brick it.
flashing a new rom will not brick it.
adding themes will not brick it.

the sbf file is a safety net to get you back to OEM in the event you get in a bootloop or stuck at the M logo.

Just make sure you read and understand all the procedures for each process.

Wow your connection must have been very, very poor indeed. I regularly run speed tests while using Wireless Tether & consistently get between 1300 - 1800 download & 500 - 1000 upload speeds, which I consider to be very good. I get even higher speeds with the hotspot work around method, but you don't need root to take advantage of that option.

I just went thru this whole process myself and spent countless hours doing the appropriate research on rooting, deodexing, ROMs and theming. It was nerve racking and scary while doing it, but in the end, it was really simple to do - just a little more involved than installing new software on your computer. Once you do everything, you won't look back. Good luck!
