Gripe: This phone's "functionality" is stating to embarrass me

I'm at my gf's nieces' birthday party, and first I try to video a special moment, but I had just finished recording something else and the screen just went black. I could feel the haptic feedback working, but nothing was happening, so I just turned it off. Then I wanted to take a picture of another cute moment with my gf, and I had to wait literally two minutes for the phone to reboot, missing the niece in the other room opening her gifts, and therefore getting my girl pissed. This is embarrassing. I'm about to trade back down to a "dumb" phone so I don't have this pressure anymore.

Yea, also with the Evo on 2.2 you can configure it so a thread only holds so many messages before the device deletes them. I have mine set to delete messages when they hit 100.

Others may crack down on my case on this alternative but a task killer may help speed things up on your Evo as well. It will help kill processes in the background that you do not need. YES I KNOW THE EVO SHOULD BE ABLE TO HANDLE MULTITASKING ON ITS ON BY PUTTING APPS IN "SLEEP" MODE WHEN NOT IN USE. But I just feel more comfortable doing this manually, and I have noticed a bump in perfomance when I do kill multiple apps.

I will definitely try this. I looked through settings already and didn't see anything for this. I also didn't see anything in the Handsent settings. Clues as to where to find this?

well in the stock messaging app when your looking at all your conversation threads, tap menu and then tap settings, at the very top you should see "storage settings". Make sure "delete old messages" is check marked and from there you can select the limit you want each thread to reach. Checking back on mine now I actually have it set to 120 :)

Thank you so much! Those long threads slow down the phone a lot.

Your problem is PROBABLY HANDCENT or an app. Take that away and I bet your problems will disappear. I don't load crap on my phone. If I load an app which causes the slightest problem on my phone, I uninstall the app.

I agree, I've 2 or 3 paid apps that I've uninstalled because of this, too bad I figured that they were the cause more than a day alloted for a refund.

Yea thats why I'm extremely hestitant to buy apps, not because I'm a cheapskate or something

But because they can potentially cause problems on your device that you may not notice until a day or so.

Am I missing something here? I had message threads like 967, 7xx, 3xx with handcent but haven't noticed anything slowing down problem. Non-rooted 2.2, launch pro loaded!

Yeah I didn't, either at those amounts but try having one with 4,500, 3 with over 1,000 and then others at like 600 and 300 and so. You will definitely see a lag when texting big time.

I used an app to delete all my messages all over 2 months. And even after that, a few of them were still way too big so I manually deleted those threads through ChompSMS. It took a while so I left the phone for a little but it finally deleted. It made a huge difference.

I've never had a problem using my camera, camcorder etc, I think this issue is a matter of understanding how to maintain your phone as others have pointed out. Smartphones are like computers, you have to keep them updated and do housecleaning once in awhile to keep them operating efficiently. The more APPS and bloatware junk installed on the operating system the slower it will get. Doesn't matter if its mac, linux, windows. The difference is the more features we get for tweaking, the more oversight is needed. Or you can get a dumbed down iphone where you press 4 buttons that make you happy, you just didn't realize you could tweak these features to a higher degree on another system.

How about using a digital camera for the special moments instead of the phone.. it's a called a phone, not a camera.

HARRRR!... Thanks, killer.

Anyway, to those that had something more constructive to say: Deleted the longest text thread I had, close to 1,000. Made the settings in the native messenger app to cap out at 100, but we'll see if it works through Handcent. The EVO was also doing something funny last night. Kept running 'mediaserver' (according to Spare Parts) even though I'd killed most tasks through System Panel. Was running my cpu at 100% all the time and making my battery baking-pan hot. Had to turn it off and pull the battery since a simple reboot didn't seem to handle the issue. Since those two adjustments it's been as snappy as the day the latest update came out. Thanks for the tips.
