Root Giving up on Android hacking community.

I can't be the only iPhone convert here who is underwhelmed with this hacking community. The iPhone has been hacked more, and more quickly than this Droid X or any of the Moto-locked phones. There are a handful of talented individuals working on it, but the key player seems to have given up.

Furthermore, even with this site - it is extremely disorganized and hard to understand what is the /best/ thing to do with your Droid X right now. We have "ROMs" (A misnomer) all over the place, with questionable functionality, and personally since I use my X for business - I am finding all the hacked solutions to be quite unstable (I'm on 2.3.15 leak right now). Perhaps the phone isn't that stable on stock software either. I am not an Apple fanboy at all - in fact I very reluctantly switched to AT&T and the iPhone when it gained ActiveSync support as it became the best tool for the job. I couldn't stand the iPhone 4 antennagate and Apple's awful response to the problem. AT&T's network (regarding voice quality and service coverage) seemed to only be getting worse.

But now, I have this powerful, larger phone, which seems to be back a step in time in some respects (stability, UI issues like WM5/6, fragmentation, email support) and a step forward in others (screen size, no need for a "tether" to something crappy like iTunes). I guess I am saying I am disappointed that there is not an iPhone 4 with a bigger screen, on Verizon, running LTE so I can use voice and data at the same time, with the Droid X's awesome noise-cancelling, and the undeniable polish of the iOS User Interface, with Android's level of customization. I'd buy that for a dollar.

So, Why can't the hacking community here band together like the iPhone hackers have? Fix the issues and make the device truly, fully superior to the iPhone? It seems the Moto lock is so confounding that it's just not worth the time for this device and we just need to wait for the Next Big Thing.

I hate to blaspheme, but even the old Windows Mobile and Moto V710 hacking communities were stronger and better-organized.

I think if the rumors are FINALLY true, I may bite the bullet and go back to the iPhone when it comes to VZW. Sigh. :(

I don't know much about what a hacked iPhone can do but the few people I know with hacked iPhones can't do near as much as I can with my DX, maybe they are not up to date. The beauty of Android OS that we have all the options of roms, themes, etc. I just installed my first Rom 2 days ago and my phone is amazing now, it was just great before. There are some Roms that aren't as stable but anyone who is looking to install them can see what's going on with them before they do so, and the devs are very fast at fixing their Roms.

what flavor Kool Aide is it this week?

maybe you have not been reading the same forums as m. but just this past month we have tons of new roms now as well ans many on the horizon, we have overclock abilities now, tons of tweaks, and the list goes on.

the iphone is a nice device but its more of a hipster/anyone can figure it out phone. Android devices are more robust.

not trying to change your mind, these are only my views and opinions. you need to get a phone that works for you and only you.

I don't think you can equate the unlocking of a bootloader to the jailbreaking of an iphone. Jailbreaking is just basically giving you the same functionality on the iphone that you get out of the box with the X and other android phones. I also came from an iphone and I couldn't disagree with you more. I feel the android community is way above the iphone community in all aspects. I couldn't be happier to have made the switch and love the freedom, even with the locked bootloader.

Really? Yes I think you are the only one who is underwhelmed by the Android Developing Community...

If you are going to slam them, then do something about it and help develop...

I guess you have never ventured over to xda-developers, because if you had, you'd see a TON of great work getting done...

Enjoy your iPhone and best wishes....

Good luck with your iPhone. I'm not mad at you if you don't like the DX. I love mine, but to each his own. If you're happier with an iPhone, Windows phone, Blackberry, Treo, etc... more power to you.

I wouldn't want everyone to be on Android anyhow. Competition is what pushes these developers to try to 'Trump' the other guys. So the way I see it, you jumping back over there only helps us out in the long run! ;)

Good luck with your iPhone. Seriously. I could care less what phone other people prefer. Whether it be an iPhone, Windows phone, Blackberry, Treo, etc... whatever floats your boat buddy.

Competition is what drives devs to 'Trump' the other guy anyhow. So the way I see it you jumping back over to Apple only serves to help us out in the long run.

So my thank you is most sincere! ;)

I normally don't respond to threads like this, but yours has prompted me to actually type something...

Begin Rant:

I think you are in the vast minority of Android owners, and android "tuners" so to speak. These phones are extremely capable in the right hands and any instability issues you are having are most likely caused by the way you have your phone setup. I have ran 5 different OS setups in the 3 months I've had this phone and they have all ran flawlessly for me. I have high demands of any phone that I own, but I know what I'm doing so I rarely modify something if it will cause diminished performance. The key is research. If you had ventured over to any of the other forums you would find 5x what is available on this site. The only "fragmentation" that I see in this community is the different forums out there causing the hacking/modding information to be dispersed around the internet but with a few extra mouse clicks you can find it all very easily.

I don't mean to be rude, but If you want a device and a community that is convenient, involves no work to properly setup and tells you what to do with your device perhaps an Iphone is a better solution for you. They are good pieces of hardware, the software is the worst part IMO but it works for some people.

If you put some work, effort and tuning into your android device you will have a phone that is far superior to anything available in the US at the moment.

Well bye then. See things is there are many many more IPhones out there that are all identical. Therefore there are less HACKS needed for the device as a whole because all the hardware and software is the SAME.

Think about it, hackers working on HTC Incredible/Evo stuff, aren't necessarily working on DX stuff because the hardware is different although the OS is the same. Sometimes there is overlap and sometimes there isn't. Its a division of labor thing.

Then there aren't that many people asking for specifics that need specifics on the Droid OS because there are many many more free apps and apps that are damned useful.

I bet if you were to ask for specifics, you might could get some help, however I do have to agree that there is some fragmentation in the modder community and its a bit more difficult to find answers ect. But the stuff you actually need, is easily out there.

Likewise for business applications, the DX is not the best tool and neither is the iphone. I have said it for 3 years now, there is a reason why business require their leaders to roll Blackberry. I have one for the company I work for. But must have connectivity and has to work functions BB is the stuff.

So yes I'm going to defend the modder ranks on the Droid OS even though I'm new to the OS. Don't know Linux well (yet) and need lots of help. I think they are doing a bang up job as a whole.

Granted is you wanted stability, maybe you should be overclocking, re-romming, changing properties and states, etc. You can do more to a DX today than you can do to an iphone as best as I know.

Sorry to hear you've given up on the android developing community.

It's important that you pick the phone that's best for you REGARDLESS of if it's an android phone, iPhone, WinMo phone or freebie flip phone.

Seeing as this thread is only going to get ugly and as there really are no questions asked in the original post, I'm going to go ahead and lock this up before someone say something that they probably shouldn't have said.

Hope you find the phone that fits your needs the best!!! :)
