Data Allowance

So this is the first time I've had a phone with internet,i'm looking at the settings for mobile network. "Enable always-on mobile data" is ticked, does that means in the backgorund 3g is always running to check for new gmail, or facebook notifications, etc etc, should I turn this off to use less data allowance. I'm okay when I'm home because it will connect to my wi-fi. There is an option for "data roaming" which is off. what is this? Network mode set to GSM/WCDMA auto? So about this, just want more info so I my phone doesn't get the better of me lol

I would get free app called net checker (I think) or 3g watchdog, they should be free.

You can then keep tabs on how much data it uses pretty easily. I feel it is either the networks are too greedy or not prepared for the new smartphones and the data they munch through.

It is pretty easy to set a widget that lets you turn data on and off pretty quick too.
From looking at my sisters desire I think you need to leave "Always on" on, and can set the phone to disable internet, but cant remember the name of that.

I think GSM/WCDMA is the different networks tech in other countries, which the phone will jump onto as required when roaming, eg UK to USA.

I hope the above makes sense! Hope your enjoying your HD, i cant wait to get mine.

Does this app show how much data you use each billing period? Or does the DHD come with a pre-installed app such as this?

I will definitely need an app like this for my data plan when my DHD arrives.

There isn't one pre-installed sadly.

It monitors it per month on the billing date you choose with a limit you can set :)

Jon..Quick question..turn your automatic sync off..then keep a check, tell me what happens with your usage :)

yeah, i just noticed it today about the automatic sync. thanks to the widget. lol.
when i turn it off, my data didn't go up so much and i set all my running application to refresh every 1hour and some manually.

using wifi at my gf house, save pretty much a lot of data. LOL.

with mobile data, auto sync off. with wifi, auto sync on. haha..

Thanks arlrb.

I used up around 200mb in three days. Kinda shock me and I doesn't know why I've used so many data. Anybody mind to share your setting on the phone? Any application running in the background? or you guys normally manual refresh? I set all my application to refresh every 1 hour and is it normal when there is nothing running in my background the data keep on going up. HELP. lol

i guess so. hmm. i read your review and i wonder how to turn off the gps? or how do i know whether my gps is on or not?

Just use the power widgets or being specific

Settings, Location ;)

If gps is active you'll see the little satellite dish at the top.
There are widget buttons & bars for quickly switching such things on & off.

yep :)
Thanks arlrb.

Well, give us a list of apps you have installed would be a help for starters :)

Hmm. I'm connected to my Wifi. Tried to download 3G Watchdog. Keeps saying unsuccessful... Any ideas? Could it be because the batteries low? I mean it's on charge at the moment.

Hmmm. I've used 1MB (that's ONE) in 4 days! I have wifi/3G/BT on all the time (though probably turn wifi off when not at home if I remember) BUT I have nothing set to sync/download automatically. I did set email to be once per day but after I'd checked I'd got it working properly I thought I can live with doing it manually. So I do. Even the weather widget only updates when turned on.

I don't think I download 200MB of data to my PC in that time.

I emailed Three and they say i dl apps from Market uses a lot of the data? izit true? So all of ur apps u sync it manually rite? and your email is push email? i mean you will get email instantly? The weather widget on the clock will auto update or how does it works? I'm so scared of my data usage now. Phobia !! Gonna change to T-mobile and get unlimited data. LOL.

I have wireless at home. And since i've had it (just today) It's been on wifi all day. I turned off some check boxes that stops stuff from automatically synching with mobile network? Or something like that. This phone has a lot of customizations and interfaces that i need to learn. Way different than Iphone. (In a good way for me, I welcome freedom)

I hope i got wifi in my Hall. :(
i just open all my apps and check all the settings.
wanna check with you. In setting, account & sync did u uncheck Background data?

So if i go into settings and set an app like Facebook for example to not sync automatically, will it update when i open the app myself ?

some apps do have the options when you open the apps it will update automatically.

Wondering what is friendstream for if all the apps like facebook and twitter cant auto update for me. LOL. I need all the status on facebook and twitter to update instantly when there is a new status update. In my home country, Malaysia, the Unlimited data doesn't have any quota like in UK so my apps on Blackberry 9700 and Iphone 3G opened 24/7. lol.

I think i got to get used to it to manually update everything. But one more question, how about email?
