Now i know many of you know i now have both the G2 and the Vibrant. i've done a quick video compairing the GPS but i probably did it all wrong.

I want your suggestions! Tell me what you want me to review/compare and i will do it and upload it.

(i will not do anything that requires adb or any more ODIN. )

the vibrant has JI6 but no lagfix. my phone doesnt lag.

Compare and contrast:

GPS number of sats in view and in use both indoors and outdoors.

Phone boot up time

Application load time, apps like Google Earth, Angry Birds, Adobe Acrobat Reader, etc.

GPU performance, Google Earth, some games from Android Market, there's a good car racing game with awesome intensive graphics, I forget the name.

Market Place application install time, from the moment you press download to the moment it is down installing.

Maybe can throw in the benchmarks below:

GPS comparison

For the record, i ran out of video memory at the end, eventually the vibrant nestled around 25 foot accuracy.

Do note, seriously, that the G2 connected to the sats in literally 4 seconds. no joke

Also i was in the bathroom. it had the best lighting. Please excuse the noise as housework is going on, You actually hear sneezing in the background.

Sure thing sammyV!! I will get on those in the morning!

THANK YOU
THANK YOU
THANK YOU

FOR CONFIRMING WHAT I'VE BEEN SAYING FOR 3 MONTHS NOW. YOU
DON'T ALWAYS
NEED A CLEAR VIEW OF THE SKY TO USE GPS.

JUST LIKE YOU PROVED in this video GPS WORKS IN YOUR BATHROOM!!!!!! HTC will pick up a GPS signal underground in a freaking bomb shelter.

Yet the GPS thread was full of fools screaming and saying GPS on any phone will not work indoors. You just proved, you don't need to be outside to get a good GPS signal. IN a bathroom with 3.3 ft accuracy!!!!!!!!!!

Perfect video!

some points to note:
The accuracy on the Vibrant still appears to be poor
It also appears the Vibrant continues to think you are traveling when the phone was completely still. That is what the digits going from 0-7 mean right? I hate that about the Vibrant, at stop lights it still thinks I'm driving when I'm completely still.

yeah the vibrant, while so much better after JI6, would think im still moving from time to time. Though i still feel its great even if its your main GPS.

Though the G2 was perfect during my workshift yesterday. absolutely superb. 6.6 feet acc, never missed a beat.

I'll install neocore but im not going to bother with the Pi one or quadrant.

I will, however, show some comparisons of 3d games, and other stuff like angry birds.

HD video, and image comparisons aswell.

I will say that i do feel that the vibrant will come out ahead, even in low light the vibrant maintains 29fps. i noticed that on a low light recording using the G2, it showed 19fps. Tad dissapointing considernig if you advertise something with HD it should actually..well..be HD aka 30fps.

Anyway ill give a full review tomorrow.

Good video. Shows the Vibrant still have issues with the GPS even after the update compare to what it should be performance wise -- see the G2.

Can you compile a list of benchmarks and their score on each phone? Would be awesome. Moreso if you decide to overclock it to the 1.42 ghz.

Realistically, this comparison still does no justice. Who is going to use navigation to find their way around a building? Doing that in the bathroom shows that the G2 has faster GPS in the BATHROOM. Which is great if I wanted to navigate somewhere while I'm taking a shit...

A REAL GPS comparison should be done outside, in the open, with the GPS program itself as it was intended to, not something you downloaded off the market. You brought the G2 into a place where you knew it was going to perform better. The general public isnt going to take their phone into a bathroom and use their GPS. However, they will do it outside when they want use the actual navigation program.

When I'm in my car or standing outside somewhere the GPS on my Vibrant flies! I dont need a benchmark test to show me that its not quite as fast as the G2, I think I'll take the real-world experience. Not to mention each person is going to have a different experience with the GPS, it's all about location.

Its cool that you compared them, but I don't think it showed much... Do it outside somewhere and post those results. If the G2 is still fast than so be it, but I think the majority of people need more convincing than a market program GPS test in your bathroom. Use the actual GPS program that we would use if we were to navigate somewhere. There's numerous thread posts out there now that have determined that benchmarks are becoming less and less important. They were great a couple years ago when the phone technology wasnt so advanced, but now they don't mean much, unfortunately.

So in a nutshell, I say scrap the program you just used, take both phones outside in an uncontrolled environment, open the navigation programs and look up a destination. I think that will serve FAR more justice than the video posted above.

Not trying to be a jerk, but I hope I'm not the only one that thinks this was a bad comparison. Just saying...

I definitely agree with the real-world use perspective. However, I think the test does show a significant sensitivity difference between the two devices. It's reasonable to think that in situations where signal strength or the number of visible sats is lessened, like in big city skyscraper canyons, that the G2 would maintain a lock where the Vibrant wouldn't.

Still the boundary for me is whether a device is good enough to serve my needs, not whether it's the best device in the world. No single phone is going to the best at everything, at least not for long.

And like I say, results will vary depending on where you live. For instance (because I was a Vibrant skeptic at one point myself), I went into the Tmobile store inside the mall where I live, did a side-by-side comparison with my phone and G2 and the G2 took longer to lock on and the Vibrant was MUCH faster. I've used the GPS on my phone a few times now with no issues or lag so I like to defend it and say that it's not so bad.

Besides, GPS is not the reason I bought the phone, I GPS in my car as well as numerous other ways to find my way if I needed to. It doesn't make or break the phone.

The test you did personally is interesting, and reassuring. I've been through different phases with the Vibrant GPS. I've had it work fine, and I've had it completely lock up my phone where I had to pop the battery to get it restarted. I've also had Google Nav take 20-30 minutes to get a lock, which is really not usable. Some of this has happened since the JI6 update. However, two days ago I read a post on another forum about using the "Clear Aiding Data" option in a version of GPS Test, and since I did that it's working MUCH better. I hesitate to say it's "fixed", since we've seen so many instances of proclaimed fixes only lasting a day or two, but so far in 2 days of testing it's really much better. If it just keeps working as it is now I'll be happy. And with so many other features on this phone it's one of the best tech purchases I've made.

ill have both phones with their GPS on and i'll do a quick little drive route. that sound good?

also i didnt KNOW the g2 would perform better. my object wasnt to promote the G2. it was to show how it works.
The gps test is legit, by the way. all its doing is showing you WHAT the gps in the phone is connected to, thats it. so a real world wont make that much of a difference. i used both the vibrant and the G2 for my job. My job requires a GPS system. the G2 wins hands down but yes ill make a ''realworld'' vid for you.

Don't worry about all the benchmarks, except for this one...mind doing

Man your house is freaking loud dude, lol.

Thats what happens when you put hardwood floor in. no furniture anywhere and everything echoes. I would have done it in the bedroom but it has terrible lighting.

Edit:

Some videos will be up tonight! I may just compile them in to one longer video

Video will include: me driving using the G2 as a gps. not a long drive by anyshot but just a video to show the smoothness of it. A comparison of the Cameras both still and HD recording. Benchmarks *not quadrant*. Comparison of both phones running a few different apps and games.

My videos are going to be postponed by a few hours. The G2 that I recieved yesterday after an exchange has a problem aswell. It shuts down completely, randomly. Trying to turn it on via the power on button does nothing. The only way to get the phone to turn back on is to remove/reinsert the battery. not cool

SOOOO this exchange will be my 3rd..which will make it my 4th G2.

I want to love this phone so bad but it seems even an HTC vanilla OS'd phone can escape from defects.

Well with problems like this it looks like the G2 might get pulled from the market BEFORE we get to see the post Froyo Quadrant contest.

I was reading about a spontaneous rebooting issue, but this sounds more serious if you have to pull the battery to get it to restart.

Too bad really, even though it's not my cup of tea it sounds like an interesting - albeit inferior, device.

Videos coming soon guys. I've been busy but also lazy.

Im still unsure which phone i'll be letting my wife use and which one ill take. I LOVE the g2 and the vibrant... The g2 and vibrant both dissapoint me on different fronts. The g2 dissapoints me when it comes to the camera. Pictures are good but the HD recording is sub par. not enough clarity and unless its optimal lighting, the frames per second drop to about 13 - 19 where as the Vibrant, regardless of lighting, maintains 29 - 30 fps.
I'm also sad that the andreno 205 doesnt pack as much punch. I was hoping for good things from the 205. If the powervr 540 is "100" the andreno 205 would be "80" its fast but its slower than the 540. however i will say its atleast the 2nd fastest phone GPU. if you go straight to the g2 you'll be fine but if you, like me, go from the vibrant to the G2 you'll notice the hit.

So right now im deciding between using the G2 for myself and the wife having the vibrant..or doing it the other way around. Hell im even considering returning the G2 for a Vibrant so we each can have one. But maybe i'll hold out until the mytouch hd comes out.

Don't blame it all on laziness, I'm sure that restarting, pulling batteries and exchanging all of those G2's has been exhausting, disappointing AND frustrating! We understand... ;)

Good luck with the replacement... Hopefully this one will work long enough to make a video.

I have a question about the video showing the GPS lock times side-by-side.

How long before you did that test had you gotten a GPS lock on the two phones?

I think what I'm getting at is fairly obvious. Locks happen much faster shortly after a previous lock.

If you didn't do it this way I'd like to hear the results of a first time in the day GPS Test session after they've been sitting idle all night. No need to video it, I trust you.

Thanks.
