How to: Overclock the DROID X or DROID 2 - Droid Life: A Droid Community Blog

OCing on the fly basically and pretty much end-user control/choice.

I know a whole bunch of DX'ers just jumped ship to the SF; not so fast.

I mean God Bless Dirrk and jt for what they have done so far, but man would I treasure this.

jrummy said he built this in 3 days after receiving his DX; quick someone mail him an SF :D:p

There's also been a heavy number of people who've jumped ship from the SF to go back to a DX or back to waiting for the next-best-thing as well :p What's a little less arguable is that many developers have jumped ship after it was found the bootloader could not actually be fully cracked :( BUT, we still have great people like jrummy :D

a big jealous of x overclock but it seems like a large portion of people cant get past 1.15 and im sure i would have been one of them if i was still there. Very, very few are stable at 1.4+. And really this is it for the x crowd. Whats left? There wont be true aosp only more vanilla and no full custom kernels.

Also the crap about 2ghz and 3ghz is just that crap. Just cause a video shows setcpu at that doesnt mean the phone is running nearly that fast. It looks slower than stock

Yeah! That's awesome. If you're running 2.2 with the new compiler, you should have some sick benches to post. How is your X scoring?

from what ive seen with the x and the other galaxy s phones on their "froyo" jit doesnt give the performance increases that we saw from snapdragon phones for whatever reason.

If you look at 2.1 benchmarks vs 2.2 where available, the droid x on 2.1 almost was hitting nexus 1 2.2 scores on quadrant, but when froyo came it jumped from maybe 1250s to 1500s and everyone thought something was wrong because the inc, nexus1 all doubled their quadrants. I remember when froyo leak came out and everyone was moaning that either jit wasnt enabled or that we need a "high mem kernel" (nevermind that all .32 kernels are able to use more than 256 ram). Everyone thought the phone would jump to 2500 quadrants and 30 linpacks or something. I think the snapdragon phones are just better suited to take advantage of the compilier, whereas other core phones didnt need the help as much.

I think with overclock now it looks like the x guys stuck at 1.15 are hitting 1700s, and the guys at 1.38-1.47 or so can break 2000. There are a few freak phones out there that "may" be able to hit 1.6 and score around 2200+.

Looking at other galaxy s phones (no voodoo) that have some form of froyo scores jump from 850 to about 1200 with jit and jumps from 8 to 14 linpack. I think thats a big and good improvement to look forward to. Even if you think that voodoo will offer only the standard improvements it does now and can't go past say 1.25 then it would stand to reason a 2.2 froyo-ed oced voodoo fascinate would be in the 2300+ range in quadrant and 15-linpack.

However, I'm optimistic that oc can go further with froyo once the very talented devs can devote their time to 2.2 kernels and that 1.4 would be stable on most phones. Whats interesting is that birdman seems to be on the path to cleaning up the code for the stock kernel. So the possibility exists that a cleaner kernel with voodoo would be that much better.

I know I'm rambling, but also if/when (more likely when) we get cyanogen mod 6.xxx another aosp roms the phone will be EVEN FASTER. The jury is out if the x will ever get that. Obsididan from cvcps looks like more of a reality but given the level of adb knowledge he stated it would take to get it to 2nd boot on an x that ll throw a ton of the x-ers off there as it seems (and this is just my observation) that a ton of them want nothing to do with the sdk and only want update.zips the can flash on their phone (i used to be in that boat too, so im not criticizing).

My only comparison on aosp/stock-based roms is on my incredible with quadrants and old linpack. Before the new sense (z,hd) roms on the inc, the best quads i could get with even a fast sense/vanilla rom non-oc would be 1400s (oc could push to 1600). Ruby, miui, and cm6 all approach 1600 without oc. Miui at 1.19 was always over 1900 and ruby/cm6 always over 1850.

Now, it could turn out that none of this comparison holds water, and we won't know until we get all these things in time. But even birdman/jt's 2.1 aosp they are working on will/should bring us even more performance.

At the end of the day though, I'm happy with my fascinate as are most here, and all this performance benchmarks and speed are just icing on the cake of a great phone. Even if there were no improvements going forward would still be good enough for me short-term.

let's not forget that the processor on the X comes overclocked out of the box.

and that its running on a newer, more efficient version of our OS.

When we get 2.2 for as much time as the X has had, THEN lets compare apples to apples.

very good point. The omap 3630 in the x is clocked at 1 ghz from I think like 700ish or something, but I think its a variation on the stock 3630 and not a straight overclock. In either event motorola went the opposite way they did from the og droid where it was underclocked on 2.0 by about 50hz. I think froyo bumped it up 50hz or something to 600 to its stock speed.

Given that the og droid was capable of doubling its stock clock speed to 1.2 ghz, by 600mhz then its not unreasonable that many droid xs see improvement to 1.4.

If we want to straight compare the x and sf. Then it would be overclock 2.1 to overclock 2.1 and the x topped out at 1.15 with quadrants in "i think" the 1400s. If someone wants to go check that, I'd be grateful :)

Most fascinates top at 1.2 on 2.1 (some can obviously do 1.25) and this is assuming dirrk, jt, birdman, et all cant squeeze some more juice out which they probably can. And we all know that we can hit 2000+ this way.

Im not counting ryans oclf because, while by all accounts its effective over stock (cant say from personal experience) it doesnt perform as well as voodoo.

So we ll see what magic or lack thereof froyo brings. If we see the x's gains id be more than happy.

All it does is crash my phone at anything over 1.1 so its not that big of a deal. Some can get higher and someone actually got it to 2ghz for a minute.

I'm sure the Sf will have something like that someday.

I have mine at 1.38. Works like a DREAM. Really solidified my decision to stay with the X.

Just wait you'll be wishing you hadn't in 2 months :D
I could gt my X up to 1.38 and it would pass the stres test and all but once I started doing normal things it would reboot:mad: or just shut off. I run Fab's ROM at 1.1 and that's about the only one truly stable. But haven't really try much after that since I got this SF last night. Been busy making it look like my X:rolleyes: As soon as I get rid of Bing it will be there.

I heard a rumor that with the lagfix Quadrant just skips over the I/O part on Galaxy S and gives it the max score. I don't know if this is true or not, but if true, it would explain some of the comparison issues with the DX.

I can't speak to that but from everyday use and testing them both out i feel the sf runs at what id expect from a phone scoring as high as it does. Runs smoother than my 1900+ quadrant incredible

I've have my X oc's to 1.38 since wednesday or thursday, and I've been very lucky I guess because I've had ZERO issues. no reboots, no lag, no freezes. Just the most amazing piece of hardware I've ever had the privilege of owning! :D

cool, glad that you were able to go above teh 1.15 threshold:)

Like ive said before the x is a good phone, just motorola is going down a dangerous road with locking down android. If they keep it up they ll get better and better until even great devs cant do much. Thats all.
