Wow! Embarrassed by my Captivate!

I went to an NBA preseason game in Orlando the other night. My friend had his new Sprint HTC EVO Droid (the one with the huge screen). Before we left my house he brought up his browser to check out where to park at the new stadium. I was SHOCKED at how fast he was able to whip around on the web. I'm so used to the Captivate taking forever just to pull up the browser let alone access data from the web. I pulled out my Captivate and went to all the same websites and it took me five minutes to do what he had done in about 30 seconds. Not to mention that he was on 3G and I was on WIFI with my cable modem.

When we got to the game I went to check on the scores of the NFL and baseball playoff games with the ESPN Scorecenter App. I brought the app up and it sat there with the rotating "wait" symbol trying to download data for TEN MINUTES with no success. There were so many freakin iphone users in the building there was no bandwidth to be had. I watched my friend pull up the same ESPN app and within one second *poof* the scores we needed were there.

When we got back to my house I tried his droid out. Every single function that I tried was blazing fast. Not just a little faster. Many times faster. We hooked it up on my WIFI and it got even faster. I even got him to download a couple of cool apps that I recommended and was once again shocked at the blazing speed.

I didn't even dare try the GPS... My friend was already telling me how much my phone sucks and that I should switch over to Sprint.

Samsung really needs to get their act together. For all the talk about how fast this Humming Bird is, I sure don't see it nor do I expect 2.2 to make up the difference. I bought this phone based on those hollow promises and right now HTC is completely blowing them away. Also, AT&T needs to do something about their bandwidth problems. Every time I get into a city or in a big crowd the data and texting slows to a crawl. Many times I get no service available even with 5 bars of signal.

Videos are fine, but until my Captivate works like that I will continue to be a paying beta tester for Samsung and AT&T. I bought this phone on day one (July 18th). How long until Froyo, GPS and whatever other fix is on my phone and it finally works properly? Somehow I doubt we will see it before the New Year. If so, Sprint here I come.

Also, I want the real official fix. Rooting and other "one click" fixes are unacceptable.

Ok i got phone two weeks ago and my phone works faster than yours. I read at many places about this lag fixes..and I even wanted to try one....but if thats what i will get after lag fix than I am surely missing something.

I wanna ask experts here. Is that the speed you get after lag fixes?

because I am already getting that and I have around 25 different apps installed and like 10 apps running all the time. Is it because I have less number of apps? or m phone is pretty new?

the phone seemed fast to me also until i installed the lag fix, you may not see huge differences most of the time but when opening the market, opening email everything just loads faster. after using it for awhile i ended up uninstalling just to see how much different everything seemed and i couldnt stand it, it felt very slow.

if you do decide to do a lagfix i would recommend searching "oclf" in the market. you can do it all from your phone including the root, its very nice

yea its ryans, i used it because all i wanted was the basic lag fix, i didnt want any of the extras with voodoo but i have heard it is very good also

Also, mine already runs incredibly fast, if it was any faster it might disrupt the space time continuum. I haven't even used OCLF yet...

Ryan's lag fix need rooting....I dont want to root my phone yet. Still trying to figure out the voodoo fix. do you know to put update.zip in he root folder..

This seems like a good app for my Dad who wants root but doesn't want the hoops I went thru to get there.

Ok...That didn't take long to impress me! Huge difference is some app speeds ie Zedge...In fact I'm hitting buttons to quick because I've gotten used to the lag.

lol huh? android has only been around 2 yrs, since 2008. so what constitutes as a newbie when the OS has only been around since 2008? Also the Captivate has only been out 3 months, so the LagFix is new to these phones, what constitutes a newbie and veteran in that case?

I don't now what phone you're using. Either you aren't using the Captivate OR you are grossly exaggerating the lag on the phone.

I think you misunderstood what i said, newbies as is people not familiar with modding and such, ie. give the phone to your grandma and see if she can fix the lag issues.

Sounds like you got a bad phone or you have something running in the backround. I have had my Captivate 3 months and it is faster than the I Phone 4 my friend at work has. Also it is very modified and it runs awsome, I am never embarrased by my phone, all my friends with I Phones are actually jealous of it. My brother has a Droid Incredible with Verizon and every device has flaws. If you don't want to mod your phone why get an Android phone. My GPS works, it has no network problems, and my internet is super fast. You may want to swap your phone for a new one because it sounds like it isn't working properly at all.

I think you misunderstood what i said, newbies as is people not familiar with modding and such, ie. give the phone to your grandma and see if she can fix the lag issues.

first off i doubt any grandma would want a captivate but yes my grandma could put the lag fix on, its all in an app in the market

Well, if it's speed you want, you shouldn't really give a damn whether it comes from Samsung or some other developers who are working to help you out. Yeah, it's not acceptable for Samsung to keep delaying their fix like this, but when there's one out that you can get RIGHT NOW, it's pretty stubborn to play the "I'll only fix my phone with Samsung's software and whine even if there's other solutions ready for me out there that can help me." But meh, I'll be having fun with my Froyo Captivate with a working GPS and super speed while you just sit and wait for your pages to load.

im not real sure about the root access code but i will tell you how to root and lag fix, i think the root access code may mean you need root but do not have it so this may fix it, i dont have it on my phone but you should be able to figure it out pretty easily

go to the android market > search "oclf", there will be 2, free and paid both work > open oclf, there will be a root option and select it > it will do part of the root immediately, it will tell you to boot into recovery and select an option called "reinstall packages" > to get into recovery turn your phone off, hold both volume buttons down then press the power button and let go of it, dont let go of volume buttons until a menu pops up > this is where you select "reinstall packages" > the phone will reboot and you are rooted

i dont remember the directions on the lag fix, its very easy though and tells you how to do it

edit:

i installed to find out if i got everything and i missed one. you will need to install ext2 which there is an option for it in oclf. takes 5 seconds. then you run the lag fix and choose how big you want to make it, depending on how many apps you have. if you plan on having a whole lot then you can move the little slider up. i have alot but when i had 2.1 i put it up to 1gb but never came anywhere close to using that much
