I want to learn everything I can about how to maximize my use of this phone. I love it so far but I want to learn more!

1. Starting with the SD card... how do I make file folders and how do I know the correct names so my Eris will read it properly? Please recommend some file folders I should have...

2. What is rooting and should I do this?

3. Any apps you can't live without?

Thank you for all your input!!

1. Either with file manager apps, or mounting it via USB on your PC. For music and videos and such, Android isn't picky about file names. It scans the entire card for media.

2. You don't have to. If you feel your phone is going too slow, or you want to customize it beyond what you currently can do stock, then yes, go for it. There is a thread all about it in the Eris "All Things Root" section.

3. All of them. Hurr. Seriously, though. Winamp just released an app for Android, and it includes one of the coolest features. You can now sync music to your phone over Wifi. All I can say is, its ultra convenient and it kicks ass.

Can you tell me or recommend which folders I should I?

You shouldn't need to add any folders at all. Your phone will create any folder that it needs, just use an app like Astro to view/edit/manage them or you can simply connect your phone to your PC via USB and mess with them that way.

Root is awesome, I highly recommend it. Do your research first though. The Universal One-Click Method was super easy and got the job done. As far as ROMs go, xtrSENSE or xtrROM (whether you prefer your default Sense experience or if Vanilla is more your flavor).
