i'm monitoring another page right now and things look like we might have root access tonight. they've got things moving back and forth on the phone now it's just getting a custom recovery onto the phone and we're in. i will update when things look really reallly good.

i'm going to try the method out and see what i get seems it's kinda safe cause i'd be using the exe that verizon gave us to update. then post what i find it probably won't be till 1 am est cause i'm running on t mob g1 speeds and have to wait till i get all the peices

but heres the page if you want to follow the progress when everthing started happening

Could someone explain the possible downsides to a SUCCESSFUL root? I know that if you eff it up really badly, it's possible to brick your phone, but once you succeed, don't you have to be lot more vigilant in getting updates on your phone, etc? Can you still get OS updates OTA or do you have to rely on 3rd party work?

Are all the promises of boundless mobile bliss offset by an increase in tedious tweaking and troubleshooting?

Also, if I crack the screen one day and the VZW rep finds out I rooted my phone, will I still get my replacement for the cost of the deductable?

Are you talking about the insurance you pay monthly for a phone? I know that they will not replace a phone on a warranty claim if they find out it has been rooted, but as for insurance, I have no idea.

So once I root my phone, I should call vzw and tell them to stop charging me $8 a month for insurance, since they wouldn't honor it anyway.... and then I need to put my phone in a Pelican case because my next one is gonna cost me $500.

From my understanding of other rooted devices, unrooting a phone is a fairly simple process. So if something is to go wrong with your phone, you should be able to just unroot it, then claim the warranty. There would be no way for them to know the difference.

Moral of this story is to avoid bringing a rooted device into a Verizon Store.

So let's assume I was able to root my phone already, and I want this update that's coming out tomorrow. Do I have to wait for someone to optimize all the bug fixes for rooted phones? Can I trust the Community to keep up with HTC's updates? I suppose it's more likely that HTC won't be able to keep up with their own community.

Isn't rooting something that you do when your device is old and you need to squeeze some extra performance and functionality from it after your provider has abandoned you?

If you update your phone via HTC's updates on a rooted phone, your phone will become unrooted. You would have to depend on the community to provide fixes for bugs.

While I have limited experience with the Android hacking community, my previous phone was an HTC Touch Pro (WinMo), and the community for that phone provided fixes very quickly for any bugs that were out there. I would assume the Android community will only provide quicker service due to the increased population.

So if I "Brick" my phone by rooting it, how do I "Un-root" it, if its already bricked ?

Sorry , but your logic makes no sense !

Well, obviously if your phone is bricked, you can't unroot it. But if something else was to happen to it, such as touch screen unresponsiveness, charging issues, non functional buttons etc etc, unrooting would allow you to make an insurance claim on these issues.

This doesn't really tell me much at all...

Is there someone that can make this sound like it's actually worth voiding the warranty? I'm a newb and I just don't "get it" when it comes to rooting, I guess...

Thanks for any info

if you want to be on the bleeding edge of technology you would root your phone. that alone makes it worth it to "void" my warranty. even though, if you do root you can go back to the official version if you have to take it to verizon for anything. but more than likely the forums (here and XDA) will be able to answer your questions better than verizon could.
every new update that comes from google, when you root you can get it! :)
BLEEDING EDGE BABY!!!
