What is the best tethering option for Evo?

What are you guys using to tether your Evo? What is the best/fastest option out there?

I am about 15 miles from 4g coverage here in Boston. I keep finding reasons to travel into town to use 4g! Hehe. Does anyone know the rate at which they are putting up 4g towers? Monthly, yearly?

Thanks!

I lifted this (my) post from a previous thread.

-Subscribe to Sprint's Hotspot service at $30.00 per month. This will allow you to connect via Wi-Fi 802.11 up to six devices to the Sprint network. It works pretty well, but don't expect to see the same tower-to-device speeds on your laptop or P.C. 50% through-speeds is about average.

-Easytether download from the Market. There is a free version that offers connection to HTTP servers only (non-secure) It is very fast, showing 100% through-speeds. The paid version (one time charge of $10.00) allows unrestricted access to all servers (HTTP & HTTPS).

-PdaNet download from the market. Same as above but the one time charge is $30.00. It also offers Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and wired (USB) connections. It is faster than Sprint's Hotspot, but not as fast as Easytether.

-Root your phone and install Wireless Tether. It is free, has no restrictions, is faster than Sprint's Hotspot, but slower than Easytether.

I use Wireless Tether for casual surfing and Easytether for streaming Netflix to my television. The difference in speed is the difference between watching Netflix in standard definition or Netflix in H.D.

Just to add 1 more....
-Root your phone and install Wired Tether. It is free and seems to be the same speed as Easytether (at least in my testing). This one may take a little more work, though, to get it working.

Yup, I tried to delete the lib/nativetaskso file to get it running, but I didn't have sufficient permission, and I didn't feel like paying extra $$ to get the permission.

Anyway, there are plenty of options out there for tethering.

Yeah that's what I was asking. If you were referring to the money it costs to buy root explorer. I did buy that but I think you can also estrong or something like that which I believe is free. I haven't verified this, however.

I must be a few fries short of a Happy Meal this week. I was wondering what that "ES File Explorer" app was and where it came from. Anyway, I opened it and click-it-y-click -presto. File re-named!
Thanks again-

After trying and trying, I finally got PDANet to work on my EVO and laptop with VISTA. It took several tries; even got side-tracked by Error Code 67 and was beginning to think it would never work. But, lo and behold, it just started working. All the same indications of problems and barriers were there but for some reason this time it connected. Hopefully, when I end this session, it will reconnect and allow me to connect and surf via my EVO.

I agree. I liked PDANet better, unless you need access to https:// sites (which requires the paid version of either), then I'd save the money and pay for Easy Tether instead, as it is cheaper by $20, if I recall.
Why did you like PDAnet better? Don't both PDAnet and Easy Tether require a program to be installed on the PC/laptop being connected?

Is that the same version as here?
Wireless Tether for Root Users - Android app on AppBrain

I heard there were issues with access control pre11.apk, where the above link seems to work fine for EVO users.

Different versions work better on different Evos. This can be due to ROMS, etc. From what I have heard, most people say the one from the market does not work well for them, but if it works for you, then great. But that is the same program that others are referring to.

I haven't tried it. I'm on the stock Sprint ROM, and rooted with Urevoked. Any idea what wireless tether works best with this?

I don't know which version will work best, but I would recommend starting with the most recent (pre11) and seeing if that well work. If it doesn't, uninstall it and start moving down the list until you find one that does.

My phone does not seem to want to post links right now, but here is the site where you can download all ofthe different versions.

code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list

Good luck

Did you enable access control?
Actually, I did finally get it working with pre11 yesterday by following the tip in Matlock's Rooting for Dummies thread. And this is with Access Control setup and enabled. :) My initial problem was that it wouldn't work with access control enabled. The pre7 version didn't work for me at all.

Are you able use it with password security on?
