Help Wallpaper quality

is there something im doing wrong? I notice when ever I set a wallpaper the image quality is crap. all the wallpapers i try are at least 800x480 but most are normal computer wallpaper size so they should fit fine after being cropped.

Make your wallpaper 960x800 - this works best with the cropping tool and maintaining original image quality.

does not work for me. When i tap the orange box, it will not allow me to select the entire picture. I only get a portion (cropped) area and the low quality. I also don't like that it is not the same photo for each launch screen.

You can't select the entire photo if it's not the right aspect ratio. You can only select a subset that is the aspect ratio to match the screen.

If the subset isn't at least 960x800 subset then yes, it'll be scaled-up and won't look as good. Find a higher-resolution source, or crop the image to 960x800 before transferring to the phone (that's what I do).

I also don't like that it is not the same photo for each launch screen.

What launcher are you using? Should be same one so you've got something configured oddly.

bare with me here...I've only had my captivate for about 2 weeks...

The pic i was using was taken by the captivate at 2560x1920. Shouldn't then allow me to select entire image?

No. You'd only be able to select up to a 2304x1920 region as that matches the aspect ratio of the wallpaper. It'd then be sized down.

You can of course select an even smaller area, but if it gets below 960x800 then it'll be sized-up and quality will suck.

I'd suggest on your PC taking that gigantic image, cropping it to 2304x1920 then resizing down to 960x800. It'll save memory and storage on your Captivate, and ensure you get the exact image you want.

Kind of sucks, coming from an iPhone that the Android OS, or maybe it's Samsung, can't convert a photo properly that was taken with the device to wallpaper. I shouldn't have to use an external program.

I did copy a photo taken with the captivate to my PC and resized to 960x800 and moved back. That indeed does work correctly. Just wished I didn't have copy to my pc to convert and then copy back to the phone

You don't have to use your PC, it just ensures you get exactly what you want and the resulting smaller file saves space on the device.

You can crop on the phone just fine if that's what you prefer. The phone converts photos taken on the phone just fine to wallpaper... you just need to select the proper region that fits. Android is not the iPhone, and this is a good thing. You have more choices with Android on how you want it to look and behave.

Sliding wallpaper is 960x800. Static wallpaper is 800x480. This is the only difference. You need to crop the proper aspect-ratio region to fit whatever wallpaper scheme you're using, that's all. Android doesn't screw-up images by stretching/squishing/distorting them to fit. This is a good thing, and the right way to do it. Just not the way people are used to since so much software does it wrong. Every time I see someone's wallpaper where it's stretched everyone to look fat, I die a little on the inside. Meanwhile, people have been brainwashed into thinking that's normal/ok.

You can also download free graphics apps to crop/resize and set as wallpaper easier right on the phone.
