Help Stream HD Clips

Are you looking for videos to show the screen off? I'd recommend playing from your storage so there's no network congestion coming into play. I recommend this video, which is what I use and REALLY shows off the screen's abilities:

Planet Earth ::: Visualization Tool ::: Official Web Site of The Secret Movie

use something like DownloadHelper to get the mp4 download. Youtube hd looks fantastic, trust me.

Thanks the link. So the only way to watch Youtube in HD is to send the video file from a PC to the Captivates memory?

No, it's just how I recommend playing it back so you're getting the most out of the video. Otherwise you're competing with network congestion, reception quality, etc.

I'm just saying, if you are looking for a video to show the screen off to friends/family/enemies then I'd recommend downloading a good sample vid, and saving it to your phone. Then accessing it through the Gallery app. Not only should it play perfectly every time, but you can also skip through it and not worry about buffering.

This phone is able to play HD videos and the display is amazing. I downloaded some HD trailers onto my computer(windows 7) and transfered it the phone's SD card. One of the formats it supports is WMV(Windows Media Video) and if you download a video in that format the phone will play it right away. you can get some WMV 720p trailers at Video Game Trailers for Wii, PSP, Xbox, PS3 & More | Upcoming Video Games

There are alot of HD movie trailers that are in the Apple QuickTime format, if you download those on your computer and attempt to transfer them to the phone's SD card, windows will ask would you like to convert it? and of course say yes and it will change it to the WMV format. you get can alot of movie trailers here
Best Place on the Web to Download HD Trailers - HD-Trailers.net (HDTN)

The phone plays HD videos like no other I have seen.

I think you're missing the point. It can play HD videos, but the screen is only 480 which is standard def technically. HD is a waste since it is a higher resolution than the screen.

An HDTV would be at least 720p native resolution, more likely 768. This phone is 480p so there is no point other than wasting space will overly large file size.

sorry for bumping this but dear lord I am dumbfounded by the amount of people confused between HD and HQ.

The youtube app on android has been GIMPED to the point where it only streams in HQ (even on WIFI), instead of HD. Forget the technical definition of HD being 720p while this phone is 480p. That is not important, what's important is that there clearly is a quality difference when streaming a vid on youtube in HQ vs downloading the SAME vid in HD, and transferring to your phone to watch in the video player.

So I don't get why you guys say "there's no point, HD is a waste" when clearly the quality difference is night and day. Perhaps we shouldn't call it HD, but rather "the best resolution the phone can display".
IN any case, the youtube app clearly DOES NOT stream in the best resolution. Using JetVD, I stream the EXACT same clip in 720p and it is CRYSTAL clear.

If jetVD can do that why can't youtube stream in 720p??

Google is ******ed for not allowing 720p streaming on youtube. What's worse than google are people who somehow think the youtube app streams in HD, when in reality it's HQ, and the quality is shit compared to what the phone can truly display.

If anyone's still too thick to understand and insists that the youtube app is streaming in HQ because "that's the best the phone can handle" then watch this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdtejCR413c

on
a) the youtube app
b) stream it using jetVD in 720p

the quality difference is night and day.

You've got it backwards. What's not important is how Youtube is bastardizing the terminology. Stuff like Youtube (and what your advocating) only further confuse the situation and pollute the terms' definitions.

Standard def = 480 lines, which includes both 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios

High-def = 720 or 1080 lines.

Youtube using the terms "SD" and "HD" to apply to their god-awful compression rates doesn't change this. Anything run through youtube suffers horrible lossy compression regardless of the number of lines of resolution.

Don't confuse "compression quality" with "definition"/"resolution". These mean totally different things. I've seen DVDs that look better than their Blu-Ray counterparts due to a lower-quality source being used by the production house for the BD version. Better quality compression definitely can look better on the Captivate. If you find a horribly-compressed HD video, resizing it down to SD for viewing on the Captivate will hide the damage caused by the bad compression somewhat. However, the Captivate is not an HD device and considering most peoples' video sources don't totally suck, it is a waste of storage (and CPU) to use the HD versions. Usually the topic comes up when discussing whether to use DVDs or Blu-Rays to convert for viewing on the Captivate. 99.999% of the time, using a DVD source is fine (and tons easier).

Like I said, forget about the technical definitions for now.

The topic discussed is streaming HD on youtube, NOT HQ.

Some people don't seem to realize that the youtube app only streams in HQ and the quality is not the best the phone can handle. In fact, it's an insult to the phone's impressive screen.

I said it before, I'll say it again,

if JetVD can stream in 720p and the quality is crystal clear, why can't youtube stream in 720p too? (again it may not be TRUE 720p on the smaller screen but my point is HQ on youtube is BLURRY and pixelated).

I completely agree, not sure why it's hard for others to understand. Its a night and day difference streaming HD vs HQ. Period. I really like the new youtube app for 2.2 but it's still the same ole HQ. I hate the iphone 4 but I have to admit I'm jealous that it can stream youtube HD and it's looks just as good as JetVD on the captivate.
