A great game! I hope you continue to develop this. Really good start. (Was just able to test out the the .apk you linked me to this morning.)

There's a few things i'd like to see.
1. Option to change the directions that the arrows go.
2. A d-pad touch pad option.
3. An option to pause it (maybe a pause touch button at the top left or so? like angry birds?)
4. When you go to the home screen or another app while playing a song for it to auto pause. I know it can be done as i have a towerdefense game I have does it and so does angry birds.
5. Also there's an issue with the game just not registering any input for awhile while playing a song and so I just get a bunch of misses and then it starts to register again.

Great work on it though, I love ddr like games and look forward to each newer version!

nice game, nice and simple, would there be any ways to add your songs into it, that would be a good feature, like your own hip hop, dance, anything really just aslong as you can add your own liking to music. also will it work on the htc tattoo

you can import your own stepmania files which you can get online, or can make your own through PC

As for the game so far I really like it, has all the customisations i've grown to love, difficulty and speed. i love how it shows the bpm difficulty and speed multiplier under the arrows.

so far only complaint I have is that you have to select song then go back an play it. would there be a way to get the song to auto launch when you select it from the select song list?

looks like i may have to go find my old stepmania .zip if I find it ill host it up here or maybe find a way to turn it into an app :p

Its a StepMania clone, meaning it will play just about any properly-formatted StepMania 3.9-compatible stepfile downloaded from the internet. I've added instructions on the website on how to manually install songs for those new to StepMania.

Once www.beatsiidx.com is up, I'll add in a built-in .zip/.rar/.smzip package installer to the next version of Beats as well as a "Download Songs" menu item which will link to the "Download Song" page of the website.

I'll add that in as a setting for the next release. In the future revamp of the game, however, it'll be StepMania-style, with a song pre-caching during startup and a simple scroll-through song selector instead of manual file selection.

Very nice work, I love it and it'll only get better. Here's my few ideas for what it's worth.

- As MJM stated, have an option to choose if the arrows flow up or down.
- Have an option to have a keypad that's like the layout of a DDR pad/game controller. It feels much more natural that way than having the up and down and everything all parallel in the same level. But with this idea it'd take up a lot of screen space. I don't know, just an idea I'm throwing out

To the mods: Any chance you can edit the title of this thread to just "Beats, Advanced Rhythm Game"?

Yay, Beats 1.1b released and available via the Market! Finally some sleep time! \o/

Fixed a few bugs, added in a lot of stuff. Pause/resume, auto-start, integrated .smzip installation, and more! Check out the website for the full changelog ; 3

is 1.1b free via the market? The First BETA version worked on my htc tattoo but with no support for multi-touch, it was quite annoying to play knowing that you have to miss some notes.

Yes, just search "beats", "rhythm" or "stepmania". As for multi-touch, if your phone properly supports multi-touch and is running 2.0 Eclair or higher, it should work as intended. 1.5/1.6 users only get single-touch but may get double-touch if I implement the 1.5 "pinch touch" hack thats been floating around. In the next release, I've added a "Jumps Off" setting though, so you won't have to worry about missing multiple notes.

Thread title changed per OP request.
Thanks!

what about adding open feint
Open Feint and Scoreloop are the two services that I plan on taking a look at once I get time. I'm sure the community would love to have leaders/scoreboard keeping. The ultimate dealbreaker though is, which one of those two offers streamlined download-able content? (or is there a third one out there that does?) If it were so well streamlined that installing a song was just a matter of going down a huge available list (as opposed to the partially manual method right now), I wouldn't hesitate to implement it.

Or you can support both Open Feint or Scoreloop and create your own download section. Only optimized versions of songs that you've created or approved would be tracked on the scoreboard. Custom songs will not get uploaded to the scoreboard but would still be scored locally on your phone. That way you'll get the best of both worlds.

I'm having a really hard time getting the music to sync with the arrows, and then when i do, switching to a new song I have to reconfigure all the timings again to get them in sync again.. :(
As far as I know, the only songs that have syncing problems are songs that use .ogg files. This, however, is a known Android problem that I've been bugging for Google to fix (they say its "low priority" though ><). For songs that use .ogg files, change the "OGG Offset" setting instead of the "Music Offset" setting and your normal .mp3 songs won't be affected. If you are still lagging sporadically, double check that its not your phone lagging due to background stuff - Beats is rather quite a processor intensive game due to the nature of having so much going on at once (music, touch sensoring, display, and timing).

That said, if you can find me two songs that are obviously off-sync but both .mp3 stepfiles, please link me and I can test things out. Beats is far from bug-free ; )

It's actually the included songs in .sm format. I'm on an HTC Incredible with over 150MB of Ram free and my processor OC'd to 1.15GHz. Even in airplane mode it is off sync, and I don't think lag is the issue at all.

Thats a bit interesting. If you pause and resume the game, does the arrows go back in-sync (after a pause and resume, the game tries to resync based on the reported time in the audio).
