Root Its done...

Ok so I loaded Titanium Backup is there anything else I should look to install before starting to tinker? Also what's the difference between Titianium and Clockwork recovery? Is there a reason to purchase the pro versions or just stay with the free ones. Last question... should I leave debugging and stay awake on or is it ok to turn them off once rooted. Thanks all!

titanium backup is just a way to save you apps + data for flashing roms or screw ups. titanium backup and root explorer are really must haves for the root crowd (well worth the 10 bucks total) also setcpu for overclocking.

clockwork recovery is an actual recovery that replaces the stock one on your phone and allows you to flash roms, themes, kernels, mods.

Awesome thx a ton nitsuj17. I'll purchase those two you recommended to start. Just scratching the surface.
As usual ninsuj17 gave you terrific advice. Allow me to concur. Root Explorer is a must and worth every penny. Now that you're rooted you will want to cruise over to xda once in a while to get your feet wet. An added bonus of being a registered member is you get SetCPU for free. Of course you can always donate to the dev. But otherwise, SetCPU for Root Users [2.0.4] It's over nine thousand 11/03/2010 - xda-developers

Also, I'll get your room ready at the Inn http://androidforums.com/fascinate-all-things-root/203203-i-borked-my-sf-support-group-thread.html :p

Yay! I'm still debating it myself. I'm computerless right now so ill probably wait until I get a computer of my own before I do anything. Im still a bit skeptical though. My biggest thing is just making the device a bit easier to handle. Its damn near perfect now. I just want something a bit more sense like.
Yeah you definitely need and want a computer to root and take things to the next level. Root, odin and clockwork need that computer for sure

SAPS ! Wow, looking at your sig, are you actually running a stable 1.6 ?????

DAMN

I just switched over from the Dinc was rooted and all. I really like this fascinate. Sure it has its Bing, GPS, and a few other small irritants, but from what I have started reading, root will take care most of that. Well maybe not GPS but, froyo will handle that hopefully. Call quality on this thing won me over alone ! Most peeps I talk to can't even tell I am on a cell !!! The what to like list is very long. But I don't want to hijack this thread, Just kinda excited with this new toy and my fingers started to ramble :). Heading over to the root section ! and some IRC he he

welcome to the fascinate party dan! :D

having an incredible myself, i know you ll enjoy the upgrade to this phone. there isnt as much to flash...yet...(roms mainly) but it seems like daily more themes, kernels, and optimized tw roms are dropping.

just a friendly warning with kernels if you want to join the voodoo-crowd...check out the i borked my sf thread in root. having been flash happy on my previous android phones i thought i was good to go on the sf, and voodoo issues can be quite humbling . it throws a kink into things for sure. that being said many are happy with non-voodoo kernels and avoid the headaches.

in any event, glad to have you aboard.

Thanks nitsuj17,

Yeah I plan on doing alot of reading. I know all to well about screw ups as I updated the radio on my Inc and had a horrible time going back so I could get the OTA froya update. Fortunately all ended well though. My first order of business is to get rid of all traces of Bing trash. Sheesh, what a slap in the face to Goog. VZW has some pretty large nads to pull that off. But I guess business is business.

Anyways, thanks for the welcome and really glad to be a part of this crowd !

I am starting to feel a lot of pressure now, may have to root today... What's the worse that can happen? I mean, heck, my wife shattered her Fascinate the other day on the driveway.

Do it. It was super easy. And ouch for your wife! I just followed this thread and it took less then 5 min tops. How to Root - Android Forums

Enjoy!

yeah with the mesmorize (us celluar version of the sf) system dump we now can completely and utterly rid ourselves of bing. jt1134 at xda's super clean rom 0.4 does it all for you actually...google browser and ehanced google search key.

Done. Now, that wasn't so bad after all...

And, the wife was without a phone for a day. Gotta love the TEC (out $50 though).

I was on the IRC channel last night and I think the new news is the Sf doesn't actually OC. It just looks like you are until you run a benchmark and wonder why it didn't help. :D

yeah thats a whole lot of confusion going on. agenthex's kernel definitely isnt overclocked, hes stated that. however the speculation that none of the kernels are overclocked is just kinda speculation. really it was hex making the statement about oc and beav just kinda saying he can't be sure.

neither jt or birdman were confirming that you can't overclock it (and jt doesnt care about oc at all so who knows if he d even look into it that hard) and across the galaxy s phones (that use the same processor) there are dozens of oc kernels so id find it hard to say that you cant overclock.

its enough to give you a headache though. im gonna stick to 1200 non-voodoo for awhile though, until something new is tested and confirmed by many.

Noob question that I am sure has been asked and responded to before.... Once rooted, how does this affect OTA updates?

short answer: we don't know for sure

better answer: 99% that root alone wont stop an ota, although you will most likely loose root in the process.

its really the removing of bloatware (especially vzw apps) that will not allow you to pull it down.

when vzw's servers and your phone are connected they look to see what software version you have and if its up to date. root doesnt (or really shouldnt) alter this

When I was on they had pretty much sworn off OC'ing since it didn't seem to do anything and all the benchmarks showed very little or no improvement. I ran the 1600 and it only benched about 50 points higher than stock. It did eat my battery like it was OC'ed though:eek: But speed wise nothing...:( Must be OCing the battery:D

Yeah sometimes I leave it on overnight just so I can see if there's new goodies released when Im sleeping. Because as we know its so common for a kernel, ROM, mod, zip to be put out and then 5 minutes later someone new logs in it goes like this:

whats up? anything new [whatever]
[dev] just dropped one
link?

At one point I had it on a open tab for like 4 days straight, that was a lot of scrolling when I went looking for something
