Root [Q] Roms/Themes etc..

this was just a thought but does anybody
know if we can install things from other galaxy s
phones to another one? like i have a samsung fascinate
and i would want to install something from a captivate
or a vibrant ect..

NOOOOOOOOOOOO....never try and boot something from another galaxy s phone unless stated it ll work on the sf.

themes will prolly bootloop you and if you have a backup I GUESS it wouldnt hurt to try and then just load the nandroid if it doesnt work.

boot anis/shutdown are fine (worst case they just dont work)

*however* rom/kernels/firmware from another phone will brick you. a rom will just bootlop you, (kernels prolly too) but loading a radio from another phone will perma-brick you, like in for good.

xda has several threads of less than intelligent decisions by individuals booting captivate firmware on vibrants, and so on....

just dont do it

why would any of that brick you for good? I thought we had the files needed to restore to stock (Odin) why can't you just flash the good stuff back?

So this is what doesn't make sense to me. Don't we have a 2.1 radio system dump that could be re-flashed? confused, again:thinking:

i believe (could be off-base) but its because most of the people flashing wrong firmware are 2.2 systems from others sgs phones.

im not 100 percent sure, but from everything ive read on the issue its "overwrite your radio, youre done". ive read that it should be fixable with a 2.2 dump, but who knows.

the question remains though, if your savvy enough to be flashing roms why would you have a mental breakdown and try and flash something from another phone.

idk, we all do dumb things but to me thats the equivalent taking something that you have no idea what it ll do and just kinda hoping things magically work out

i

Because we think we have the tools to un-flash it???

It still make s no sense to me. It shouldn't matter what version or anything if you can flash it you can flash it back. So unless flashing the radio prevents you from flashing I don't get it. what am I missing ??

fair enough. i cant give you a great answer as to why, im not as super smart with this stuff as a lot of the xda guys. but all the galaxy s phones forums are littered with total bricks by people doing it.

as to thinking we have the tools to unflash...basically yes...but anyone thats read anything knows that every model is in someway unique with specific files/drivers etc. so unless someone has ported/modded it, it wont work with your unique system, so why bother? unless stated otherwise nothing good will come of it.

edit: it seems that overwriting a radio actually changes the firmware of your devices in a way thats almost a hardware change. (if that makes any sense)

Well I agree that it probably won't work but some of us ( I mean them) like to "experiment":D ...Most likely with the assumption that we can undo whatever we screw up.

Note to self; do not flash that Droid Incredible ROM to my SF later today.

now what am I going to do?:D

haha :D

yeah, i agree about thinking we can do what we want and then fixing. i mean its one thing if birdman decides "hey lets take a shot at a captivate rom" and then screws up. he was probably doing it in an effort to make it work and port it.

most of the people doing it however go something like this "omg, i totally rooted this morning, and my friends cousin said hey there is 2.2 for your phone out now in malaysia, go get it! and thenz i went to this board and tried to flash it that clock thing and now my phone is stuck at a Telcell splash screen! im gonna try and return this to verizon if you dont help me immediately."
