Is the new Samsung that good?

I think the pros and cons depend on if you are someone who plans on rooting your device or not. The fascinate is probably the phone that changes the most from non-root to root, whereas a phone like the droidx the difference is much smaller.

With the voodoo lagfix, the fascinate (and all galaxy s) phones are the best out there period and thats taking into consideration its still on 2.1, 2.2 will only make it that much better.

Unrooted, it is a bit laggy at times but still pretty good although not as good as the x out of the box.

The screen imo is fantastic but not everyone agrees on that (in fact in the past I didnt like it when playing with it).

Wifi on this phone is ridiculous. Range is great and speed is sick. Right next to the router, my previous x got around 18 down, my fascinate 24 down, and my incredible 17 down. On the other side of the house my fascinate 17 down, x 12 and incredible 8.

3g is hit or miss depending on the phone. Mine has been fine but others say its spotty on theres. I am a tad disappointed with call reception. My x and incredible always lock right away and had great reception anywhere. My fascinate takes an extra second or two to lock the call and is usually a bar or two lower, but call quality is good.

My unbiased opinion would be this for a verizon smartphone customer: If you have no desire to ever root and you want a huge screen get the X (my biased opinion would be never buy a motorola product because they hate the development community and im done with them), if you plan on rooting and the like buy the Fascinate. If you plan on rooting but prefer a slightly smaller screen buy the incredible, if you want a slide out keyboard and smaller screen and don't plan to root buy the d2.

Pulled from the "Movers from DX thread":

+The phone is light!
+SAMOLED screen
+Hummingbird processor
+Lots of 3D power
+Built in Task Manager
/"iPhone-esque" app drawer (may or may not be fore you)
/Touch-sensitive home buttons (once again, may or may not be fore you)
-Buggy GPS (for the moment, Froyo will fix)
-Android 2.1
-Colors aren't as "true" as LCD
-Few 3D apps currently (Hummingbird loses it's advantage)
-512MB RAM, 325MB that you can use (ATM)

Overall I'm loving my phone. The screen is amazing.

I love the fascinate i had the X and it was just too big and the fascinate IMO is a better overall phone yeah some people have gps issues but a fix is likely to come for that and once froyo hits any of the minimal lag some people experience will be gone.

not according to some threads at XDA, apparently lag is still there with froyo and the gps is hit or miss......wtf samsung?!?!!?!

My only cons are individual text tones. For each contact.
[Unless using a downloaded app; Handcent ( IMO I don't like it)]
No on-screen notification when in locked mode; alerting of missed calls or messages.
[Unless using a downloaded app; noLED (Drains a lot of battery)]
>8mp Camera. [Some might not find that a problem; Not really a big issue for me.]

Other than that, the phone is awesome.
Huge, bright display. Fast. Customizable. Sleek.

Cons I've read: colors innacurate, GPS is bad, call quality poor, defaults to Bing.
Pros: light, thin, appealing saturated screen colors.

??

My Fascinate:

- Colors are glorious, and accurate.

- GPS is fast, accurate and reliable.

- Call quality is perfectly clear, sharp and interference free.

- Bing does not have to be used, just put a Google icon on the home screen with a link to Google (and wait for 2.2 ;)).

mine
-colors great
-gps takes forever to lock
-call quality great
-bing no longer exists whatsoever on my phone (ok maybe a hidden log or file somewhere)

I've long wondered if GPS is location sensitive from region to region, as I see varying reports of its speed and reliability.

As far as Bing goes, I use it, unless I'm in my browser, then I go to my homepage which is Google. Non-issue. ;)

yeah actually bing isnt bad, to me its the principle. since the mesmorize browser was ported, i havent changed my homepage because i think its funny to have us cellular as it. :D

Yes it's that good, well as good as any other phone on VZW!

Call Quality- Very Good...

Screen- lol...it's awesome! People have to stop with the colors being to vibrant. I had the Droid X, the newer Incredible with SLCD, and the Evo...Neither screens compare to the Fascinates!

GPS- It works just fine..Sometimes it locks in 5 seconds, sometimes in a few minutes!

Bing- Just dont use it, as simple as that! Download Google maps, and make Google your home page....See, now how hard was that!

Signal Strength- Ahhh Haaa...The one chink in the Armor! The one I have now has mostly behaved itself, however my previous Fascinate flat out sucked when it came to signal strength! It's an issue that varies from device to device...But a fix should come with 2.2

Overall...It's an awesome device

First and foremost, anybody that says the colors on ANY AMOLED screen are accurate are smoking crack. ALL AMOLED screens are grossly oversaturated by 30% or more making it impossible for them to have accurate colors.

Now that I got that off my chest on to my reply to the OP. I currently have in my arsenal of devices the Droid X, Droid 2, Fascinate, 2-Droid Incredibles (one with AMOLED and one with S-LCD) and an Original Droid.
The Original Droid its just to play with roms and overclocking so I will leave it out of the big picture.

I would rank the current VZW lineup like this root or no root.

1. Droid X. Easily the best device on VZW and perhaps the best you can buy period.
2. Droid Incredible. I would get this if the form factor of the X was too large.
3. Droid 2. I am not a huge fan of hardware keyboards but would still choose it over the Fascinate.
4. Fascinate. Released with way too many major issues that have yet to be fixed. Poor call quality. Poor cell reception. Broken GPS. All in a package with suspect build quality and a dose of bing on top.

Is the Fascinate all that. No it isn't. Not even close. If all you are looking for is a pretty screen than the Fascinate is great. If you want a device that works well under that screen then Fascinate is not the device you should pick.

wow, way to come in here and flame. if you don't have a fascinate, or don't like it great. everyone has their own opinion. i have the fascinate, incredible, and had the droid x.

personally, i prefer the fascinate of the 3. poll 20 different people, you ll get a mix picking which one they like.

i appreciate everyones different opinion but theres no need to be rude, and tell people their crazy for their preference in phone/screen. obviously if you ask someone in a sub-forum if they like their own phone, they are going to say yes and tell you why. no need to go nuts.

personally i think all 4 of those devices are great. i am anti-motorola as i personally feel they are taking the spirit of android's openess and pissing on it with their locked bootloader and i will not support them. and who knows what htc is doing with the whole unrootable (permanent root anyway) g2

those companies will only get better at cracking down on hacking. i can envision a day not too long from now when samsung will be your only option for a "open" devices (not to say its open, but hackable). yes samsung half-asses their software, but every company has its flaws. i ll take that over the considerable energy the other oems are spending into preventing us from using our devices the way the want.

that said, have a nice day :)

I am all for choice. If you like the SAMOLED screen thats great, no issue there and I didn't state that they were crazy for liking the display. However, anyone that says it has accurate colors is just bonkers. How can a device that oversaturates its colors by 30% or more be accurate?
As I stated in my post, I have the Fascinate and I find it inferior in just about every way to the other devices I mentioned in the post. As far as locked bootloaders go I can do just about anything on the Droid X as I would ever care to so its not an issue for me or for most people that will buy that device and you can bet your behind that if all the makers of these devices lock them down Samsung will follow suit.

I don't have a single issue with anyone liking the Fascinate. The OP asked for opinions and he got many. Since I have the Fascinate plus several other devices from Verizon running side by side I gave the OP my opinion.

hahahahhahahahaha. I guess I was waiting for a DX fanboi to show up and.. presto! lol.

Honestly, think whatever you want. Maybe you curbstomped your fascinate before you made that list of problems.

After actually having the DX for 29 days and trading it in, I think I should point a few things out. (yes, it was an INCREDIBLY hard decision but I am more than happy that I did it).

I'll respond to some common claims:

1.) The Droid X may have 3 mic's, but I have noticed that the people that I talk to can hear me JUST AS WELL as they could on the DX.

2.) The DX has a bigger screen. Really? How much bigger? OH YEAH, not enough to brag about. Seriously.. have you seen the two side by side?

3.) I patrolled the DX forums very frequently, and noted that 90% of all the posts made were numerous COMPLAINTS, including:

a.) My DX randomly reboots.
b.) My DX is frozen and requires a battery pull.
c.) My 3G network keeps dropping.
d.) My internet randomly stops connecting and I have to either battery pull or wait for 15-20 mins.
e.) I can't hear my DX's rings or alerts because the speaker volume is extremely quiet when it is lying on a surface or in a pocket.

4.) Battery? I suppose I conditioned my battery pretty well on the SF because this is my THIRD day using it. NEVER did I get that on the DX.

5.) Sure, the camera is 3 megapixels higher, which does equate to more data, but have you actually looked at pictures on the DX vs. the SF. They look remarkably similar.

6.) You compare the DX's 2.2 to the SF's 2.1. You do realize that you're trying to compare a newer version of an OS to an older one. With all the performance of the SF being still higher than 2.2 on the DX, imagine what will happen when the SF gets its update?

7.) Have you heard the speaker on the SF? It's clear that it is much louder and even crisper than that of the DX. I can talk on speaker phone literally from across the room, and can actually hear my phone ring from inside of my pocket.

I consider myself to have had minimal issues on my X, as I treated it like an EGG, but I still experienced the above problems. At least with any issue on the fascinate (i.e. GPS) there is almost always a software fix. Trust me, I was so excited for the X and had no plan whatsoever to switch to an SF, I just downplayed it in my mind so that I could justify my X.

Also, I think its not stressed enough that the Fascinate has a more capable processor as well as GPU, which DOES make a difference just by using the phone. Even after 2.2 the X continues to have some of the same issues and is only slightly "faster" that it was before.

Besides quadrant scores, my SF NEVER lags anywhere (its instant) in the areas that my X did. I would have loved to keep the X but its being unbiased that allows you to see the real differences and make the right decision.

Honestly, the only thing I miss was the notification LED.

To the OP: Get a Fascinate and join the MANY people that have made it the best performing phone out there. We already have voodoo, roms, overclocked kernels, and its all on android 2.1. Not to mention that Froyo is coming as well, so you'll see an even more monumental difference in performance between the two.

First and Foremost...People like you bug the hell out of me! An opinion is an opinion..that's cool! But your in the Fascinate Forum..so naturally your obnoxious remarks are not going to get a lot of love. Now the debate is not about which Android phone is better..for which you stated the Droid X is the best out there..I severely disagree! I had it for a couple of weeks, and I will go on record as saying Moto sucks! Number one, the screen looks washed out, even next to my EVO it looks washed out, blur is just plain boring, the camera is no where near as good as the Fascinate, video neither. Save the 8 Mega pix talk, and 720p, neither on the X lives up to its specs! Maybe out of the box by itself they look decent, but next to the fascinate both look very dull and washed out. Call quality was decent, as a matter in fact my Fascinate is louder and clearer. However the phone is fast, and signal strength is very good! But its not like the X is light years better, especially when mine started getting dust under the screen within a few days! Nope, I'd take my Fascinate over an X! Now give me a bigger Incredible with gingerbread and the love affair may end rather quickly!

I'll take a stab at it from my personal experiences with all these phones. I’ve owned 3 Droid X's 1 D2 and 1 Incredible plus this Fascinate.

I would rank the current VZW lineup like this:

1. Fascinate. Easily the best device on VZW imho. The unlocked bootloader plus the amazing hardware make this the clear winner in my book. GPS issues should be remedied with 2.2. The screen is light years better then the dull looking Droids. Only the Incredible came close and that’s with the AMOLED screen. And a 4" screen is perfect. Not too small and not too large. I’ve had good call quality and amazing battery life. Bing is a non issue come 2.2. say buh-bye to Bing. Or if you have some tech savvy toss Bing in the toilet today. The camera is also very good. I’ve taken shots with it and compared them to my friends X and he asks me to send him my pics since they are so much better. I’m very satisfied with the Fascinate.

2. Droid Incredible. I would get this if the form factor of the Fascinate was too large. But in my experience the battery life on this phone is the Achilles heal. It makes enjoying anything about this phone difficult unless you carry a charger in your pocket. And the 3.7" screen is just too small.

3. Droid X. Great signal. Very feature loaded. But has (and I’m not the only one that has this opinion. Just read any of the forums) TERRIBLE hardware issues. I’ve had three... count THREE Xs all which had hardware issues. Loose buttons, dead pixels and lots of lockups, freezes and LAG. I've also experienced trying to make calls and the sound just stops working requiring a reboot. The Blur is also very boring and does nothing to further Android. Matter of fact I know two other people who are experiencing various issues with their Xs and keep asking to play with my Fascinate. They both say they wish they waited and picked up the Samsung. I’ve had zero lock ups or any screen issues with the Fascinate and they are jealous. ;)

4. Droid 2. The red headed stepchild of the lineup. Already kicked to the curb for a more powerful version after only a few months of life. Keyboard is ok but meh... It has a nicer display color wise than the X due to tighter pixel density, but it’s still not as amazing as the SAMOLED screens imho. The D2 also suffers from the same sluggishness that the X has. Maybe the D2G will be better choice when it comes but we are talking about today.

Also one of most amazing things about owning a Fascinate is the freaking AMAZING community here on this very forum. Tons of friendly, knowledgeable people who are willing to help others. They don’t put others down and really are extremely helpful. To be honest after being part of the DX fanboi community it’s night and day here. This forum is one of the reasons I decided to try out the Fascinate after my horrid experience with the Droids. And I am not sorry I did.
