Accessories Droid X Otterbox Defender Case... Are they kidding???

I pre-ordered this case on 9/8 from eBay and now I'm being told that the case release date is being pushed to mid-November... I'm not the type that really makes a big deal out of this type of thing but now I'm just starting to get rubbed the wrong way from Otterbox. This company simply does not have the decency to put a definitive release date on their web site. I simply started this thread to see who else out there is a little perturbed by this delayed release and lack of communication.

Man I really don't see why these big companies like Otterbox and Seidio are taking so long getting cases out for the DX (Seidio has most of their cases available now, but not in every color). I mean these guys have no excuses, this is how they earn their bread and butter. I would expect a company like Otterbox to have their product on the shelf no less than a month after the release of the phone. It is inexcusable for a company that size to drag their heals this long. BodyGlove had their case out almost immediately, what's taking Otterbox so freakin long?

That being said, the sample pictures I saw on their website didn't impress me. I really don't care for the way the hinge sticks out like it does, and I feel the sides come in way too far towards the edges of the screen. It's hard enough to get used to cases limiting your access to the screen that barely have an edge on them at all. Their cases seem to have a much thicker edge than most I've seen. But perhaps the ease in which you can open the case and remove the phone makes up for it?

Hard telling... since they don't have one out that I can test my phone in.

I guess the iPhone is a hot item for them and it's only one model for the OS, whereas with Android, you have many, many different phones on the OS. Just a thought.

i'm sure that's it. plus, they sell the iPhone ones as fast as they can make em. and they only have to manufacture one size. for each new phone that comes out, they have to change up the manufacturing process.

i say who cares. i dont want to buy a backpack just so i can have something to carry the otterbox'd phone around in.

I heard mid-november from the authorized dealer I bought the case from on ebay. They have been sending him updates from time to time. This has been a very big let down from a company with so many fans and followers.

Personally I have decided to not get an Otterbox or Seidio case for a few reasons.

I got the Droid X in July on the release date. It is now almost November so I have had the phone not quite 4 months. I always qualify for the annual upgrade and with Verizon coming out with their new spectrum at the end of the year, you have to believe that there will be a ton of new phones.

So my theory is why drop $50 dollars on a phone case that I will use for only 7 months? $50 divided by 7 months (By the time the Otterbox is available per the OP) is roughly $7 dollars a month for a stupid phone case?

Don't get me wrong I have used Otterbox in the past with my old blackberry but if they want to drag their feet and cater to the iPhone crowd let them...I just hope they alienate enough of the other phone users out there that eventually all they have left is the iPhone crowd simply because the rest of us have left them and found alternativeness.

I mean seriously...$50 dollars for a phone case that I will only use for 7 months? Get real Otterbox... You definitely aren't getting my $50 dollars that is for darn sure!

At this point, I'd like to give up on Otterbox, but there just doesn't seem to be an equivalent out there. I need a case that will protect the phone from the kind of abuse that comes with being a bit klutzy.

I looked at Seidio's offerings, but they just don't seem to measure up (though admittedly, it's hard to tell from the pictures online).

Ok I know personal preferences come into play with the decision and all, and not everyone is going to like the style of the Seidio cases, but I don't see how anyone can fault the protection of these cases. The Active X case I got is quite simply just about as secure a case as I've ever seen. Especially for just $25 bucks. But if you are REALLY clutsy, then the Rugged case adds another additional shell around the whole thing.

If you don't like the style or whatever, that's simply up to you. But I don't think there's anything about the Otterbox that protects the Droid X any better than some of the other cases on the market. Heck BoxWave's 'Armor' case ($27 bucks online) is made out of aircraft grade aluminum... It doesn't get much more secure than that.

I did finally find a video demo (unbox / install) of the Seidio Rugged. It's better than I could tell from the pictures, so that's certainly a possibility. The problem with BoxWave's Armor is that it's ONLY aluminum. It protects against scratching and chipping, but not shock.

I can't imagine any form fitting firm case can protect a phone from shock, since the shock gets transmitted directly to the phone. The best you can expect from one of these cases is that perhaps the screen won't receive a direct hit if it should land screen side down.

I just bought the Platinum Best Buy case, made by Seidio. It is probably no more protective than any other, but the nice thing about the case is that it fits my phone even with its extended battery and battery door. I like that it comes with a Holster that securely holds the phone.

The only style case that may be more protective against shock would be a leather pouch. Of course it is only protective if the phone is in the pouch and the pouch is dropped. Since the phone is removed from the pouch when you are using it, the phone then is totally unprotected.

I had a otterbox (big model) case on my eris, then later got the seidio, the seidio is much much better with both looks, feel, and protection.

I got my dx last week, i have my new seidio case on order.

Perhaps not a whole lot. But I could imagine the rubber part of my Seidio case absorbing anywhere in the neighborhood of 5 or 6% of the impact. Maybe not much, but it's something.

Any absorbtion is better than no absorption.

At least for the eris, the siedio had thick felt on the inside of the case...im guessing that would do well to absord shock as well.

I thought that too, but if you blow up the pictures, it's a little more clear that they're different. That being said, it's still very hard to tell the difference in depth.

the impact series ($19.95) is just a silicone case w/screen protector/film, the commuter ($34.95) is a 2-piece case: a thin silicone membrane with a hard plastic reinforcement and a screen protector/film, and the defender ($49.95) is a hard case with a built in screen protector (hard plastic) and a silicone jacket that goes around it. also, the defender comes with a belt clip/holster. all of this information is on the website guys.
