Merger Anyone?

@nateo200. indeed you are right about the network difference. i completely blanked out on that one. with that said, the should be enough to put a stop to the rumors as it would be impossible for either carrier to change technology. Verizon would never buy sprint, theyre to big of a company especially with their nextel business base keeping them afloat.

Agreed just look at the awkward verizon and vodafone relationship for example, if it weren't for a giant see seperating them they would never work. As for verizon buying sprint, I would like it but the whole nextel thing would never work with verizon.

Let me throw an idea out there. Something that is pretty far fetched and may not be possible. Some of you that are more knowledgeable may know if this is possible. Lets tie ALL the rumors of this weekend together. Sprint and T-mobile merge creating a CDMA / GSM cellular network. Google buys the Sprint/T-mobile company. Google is sitting on the gPhone which is unlocked and can handle both CDMA, GSM and WiMax. Could the new gPhone be setup with one number and switch between CDMA and GSM depending upon the strongest signal? Foreign travel? no problem?

Dual mode CDMA2000 and GSM/UMTS is 100% possible and plausible however thats a bit of a tall request to put in every single handset including dumbphones or else coverage could suck for non-smartphone users. In addition I don't think WiMax is in any sprint handsets yet but Ill just leave that out. The whole scenario is just one big tall order though, that is allot of radio's to put into one phone, look at the iphone for example, quad band GSM, tri band UMTS, bluetooth, wifi, GPS reciever, etc. people wonder why its battery life is what 6 hours on 3G? not even. T-Mobile currently has 2 frequency bands and once they increase there coverage its going to be very simple for them to manage there 1700Mhz UMTS networks and there 1900Mhz GSM networks, last thing you need is GSM, UMTS, WiMax, EVDO, 1xRTT, etc. to handle, it would just be a nightmare. As for google buying T-Mobile and/or sprint, well thats just an entirely different topic that I really don't feel like addressing right now since its probably not going to handle.

@Stormin, I was thinking something similar since Deustch Telekom cannot be pleased with the Under-performance of Tmo...they might be willing to talk a deal. But my gut feeling says domination. Note DT's dominance of the Euro market...

If DT were to hold onto Tmo, buy Sprint which has Boost Mobile, Virgin and Nextel, they could rival Verizon in the US. If Verizon were to buy Sprint, it would be bad for consumers...no competition means no deals on phones, plans or service for that matter. I think DT's purchase of Sprint thus gaining a multi-capable network (GSM/CDMA/WiMax et al [think domination]) in the U.S. market is more likely the plan afoot. I don't for one minute believe that Sprint's stock rose on account of it's acquisition of Virgin...there is a bigger fish frying somewhere.

This merger rumor might also explain why DT appears not to be throwing money behind a better phone lineup for Tmo. Always before a merger, spending is decreased to gather resources. In Tmo's case, spending appears to have halted, :(

To add to the conspiracy theory, Google is much like Microsoft where as they are seeking domination. Point two, other carriers have been offering BOGO deals to lock people into two year deals. Sprint has not offered such Buy one get one deals that I have seen. Maybe they couldn't afford it or maybe they know what's coming. Any way, it is fun to speculate. Glad my Sprint contract is up in 4 days.

Something tells me that if T-Mobile had gotten there foot in the door fast on the spectrum purchasing and gotten some 850Mhz spectrum and had a regular euro style 2100Mhz UMTS network they would be huge now not to mention there coverage would be allot bigger than it is now.

Sprint still has a dog in the Android fight. They dropped the Hero to $99, prompting the BOGO HTC Android Christmas battle. Last week one night Verizon had the Eris on a BOGO, by the next morning they dropped the BOGO and are just giving the darned thing away if you will only sign on, LOL.

While Sprint is still a player in the Android Christmas pricing wars, they have to make a profit because they just lost over half a million subscribers. Tmo lost over 77,000 subscribers and I am curious as to why THEY are so silent during this rash of Android sales to close out the year and the quarter???

This pricing war is the best thing to happen for consumers in awhile in the mobile sector. You can cut deals, demand better plans...and GET them! Whereas before, the companies were arrogant (ATT still is, to their own hurt, LOL - see how they're gonna stick it to their Apple users on that data increase?) and the providers had a "You don't like it, too bad, you're stuck" attitude toward it's customer base.

Now, with the decrease in the early termination fee and the lowering of the price on the Androids, its worth it to get out of contract for $200, get a Verizon HTC Android for nothing and settle into bliss, LOL. Even the Sprint HTC Hero Android @ $99 is a steal with their unlimited plans (I always say, everything is negotiable!). Even MetroPCS lost a few thousand customers due to this pricing war...So, it's serious out there! ROTFLOL

Solid post. AT&T is way more arrogant than they can afford to be, when they can live up to being "the fastest 3G network" maybe just maybe they can be a little cocky but till then they need to shut up and start fixing there disgusting backhaul issues. As for mergers, now that I think about it this is sort of random but I think T-Mobile could benefit from purchasing MetroPCS and Cinncinati Bell, I mean same network time and more coverage, whats to loose? Still right now T-Mobile needs more spectrum.

I am still going for the Google to buy Sprint theroy or maybe even partner with Sprint. With the Wimax here and getting bigger there is alot more opportunity for Google to get out there in the telecom business. Sprint just needs to get rid of Nextel. That deal pretty much brought them down. Imagine if Google got into telecom they would probably dominate everything. Which could be good and could be bad.

I would love for google to get into the telecom business but not as a CDMA2000 carrier...yuck! If Tomorrow I turned on the news and there was an announcement of a new cellphone carrier called "Google 3G" life would be grand. But unlike other countrys the US is just so damn big and spectrum is just so hard to come by.

That why Sprint is going to win the data wars. THey own the most spectrum out of any company.

Just to put everyones mind at ease.... I don't think google has any plans to join the carrier wars anytime soon. Secondly the goverment would never allow a merger. Sprint attempted to merge with mci worldcon and the deal was shut down because it was ruled as a monopoly. Google is a giant much like mci and therea no doubtin my mind sprint would be shot down again

Google is not a telco, MCI Worldcom was. And to be a monopoly you have to be the ONLY business around, i.e. Bell Telephone before the breakup.

Also, Sprint more than doubled their stock price this year to $4.18!?!?!?!? Wow...I am underwhelmed...

What if Google bought HTC??? Doesnt the new Google phone "Nexus" look very similar to the HTC Passion? and there is no HTC branding on the Nexus either. Google is going to make some big jump into telecom weather its there new branded phone or something else. I said it first here. Now only if the Google stock was at a reasonable price to buy it.
