Wifi instead of 3G

Any guides out there for using your Android phone (I have a LG GT540 BTW) on a WiFi network only and not 3G?

None that I have heard/ read of. The only thing I can advise you though, is to try and see if there is really no way of getting a data plan as using an Android device without one is a bit pointless. All the Internet and e-mail on the go become completely untrue.

Really, mine works fine over wifi

And you don't have a 3g connection? You have never connected to 3g even to set up your phone? Background sync is turned on by default. Did you deliberately turn that off before you first connected to the Market?

Try this out...turn off background sync and try to get into the Market. You won't be able to get in.

I know you need the background sync, what I mean is I can use the market and gmail with no problems over wifi. I turn off the mobile connection when I use wifi

I know when I first got my phone, it was Christmas Day and I wasn't able to activate it right away. I was able to download apps from the market over wifi and set up my g-mail with no problems. I do have a data plan since my provider requires one, but it was not activated then.

Background sync needs to be on to connect to the market. It will use wifi to download if you are connected to wifi. But initial connection to background sync needs mobile data AFAIK.

I don't have a data plan and I'm able to set up Gmail and access the Market just fine now, but initially I couldn't. I think I had to go into Accounts and Sync in the Settings menu and select background sync and auto-sync, as well as set up my Google account on the phone. I'm able to access everything over WiFi. I just checked how much I still have one my prepaid card and it doesn't look like my phone has chewed into that whatsoever. Don't listen to the people saying an Android phone is useless/pointless without a data plan. It's plenty useful; plenty practical, too.

Not at all, you have all the features using Wi-Fi that you would with a data plan so someone that is in a Wi-Fi area 90% of the day wouldn't benefit much from a data plan.

Now blackberries, those are useless without a data plan.

Symbian... EASY!? That's a joke right? I've tried setting up my Wifi with my old Nokia N97 and it connected, but IT STILL uses my 3G Connection for Internet!
