How Will Passion Be Better Than iPhone?

Iphone currently records at 640x480 30FPS and IMO considering the camera app currently destroys what is currently out there for android handsets. But hopefully the passion does do 720P and has better lowlight rendering. The "google Phone" test photos that they employees are putting up right now are terrible, so hopefully that is not the "passion" phone.....

Agreed , android has a looong way to go when it comes to picture/photo functionality.
The pics out now are terrible.

Good HD video would go along way.

Tiny lenses, focusing small amounts of light onto tiny CCDs, will never give good pictures (especially indoors), regardless of who makes them. If you want to take good pictures, get a big SLR camera.
vado HD This footage is recorded on a vado HD, which has a very small lens. 720p video footage looks amazing and I'm really looking forward to seeing it on the Bravo.

edit: make sure that the HD button is selected

Yep, VERY good point! Here is a picture to show what you're talking about.

Wrong. They can't ever beat good SLRs for many reasons and can never accomplish the same shallow depth of field but for just P&S day to day quickies there are plenty of great in good light to sufficient in low light quality images that can come out of quality small sensors with good software to drive them.

@ kof33: you saying that it's ok to have speed and you can live without multi-tasking. another word, you woud be just as happy to buy a computer with no multi-tasking as long it has speed. NOW! that you've a CHOICE?? HUMBUG!!!

Sure, if it means when your wife is calling you at work because a stranger is creeping around the house and your phone will actually ring instead of locking up because you are listening to pandora and reading emails.

User experience is obviously the reason Apple justifies their lack of multitasking support and if you have used iphone OS the average user would never even see the benefits of multitasking. But all that aside if multitasking was doable with absolutely no adverse effects on UX then there is no reason to have it.

But that is one reason Winmo got sunk because even as the software engineers swore they used their test handsets which were purposely starved for ram and overly taxed said that there was no need for a task manager because PPC/winmo handled all of the memory management efficiently. But everyone still used a task manager and even so Winmo was a terribly laggy and unreliable mess.

I am afraid that even though android memory management seems better that it is falling into the same pattern of winmo:

Multiple OS versions across different manufacturers with different variations of hardware and app developers with sloppy code. I noticed on all the handsets and even more so on the droid (prob because it was 2.0) that there were lots of lockups and force closes. Even though android says their memory management is good. Guys say to use task managers to kill tasks but as in winmo it often seems to possibly cause more problems than not.

I/We can handle fiddling with an OS and its quirks, but we are probably 1 in 500 or more and if you spread us all out between several manufacturers and carriers it ends up spreading it all thin and overal a pretty big mess.

This Iphone I have been using for 5 or so days now has at least 70-80 apps on it and a lot of them pretty freaking unbelieveable and i have ran the crap out of it and it has had no lag or anything weird going on with it. Whereas the Droid i had to replace once and hard reset at least 4 or 5 times.

Although I have not been around town since i work out of a home office and signal here has been the best of any carrier. My wife travels around quite a bit and she mentioned she thought the call quality was definitely worse than any we have tried.

Another big omission I see with the iphone is the lack of any led or visual feedback. So if you missed a call or reminder you would have no idea until you turned on the phone. The only answer i got from fanboys on that was the phone is so good and does so much that they are never not looking at it for more than 10 mins at a time, but that is just ******** IMO.

You just agreed with me. I didn't say they weren't acceptable. Someone's definition of "good" will be different from anothers. After a year with a SLR, I can't tolerate a 10MP point and shoot anymore. I've become a snob, but I can't untrain my eyes at this point. It is simple physics. A smaller sensor means there is less area to absorb light, and the quality won't be as good when compared directly to what you get from a larger sensor (especially in low light). A small lens can't project an image onto a large sensor. Phones will always be limited. I was just trying to say that a 5MP Android won't be much worse (or better) than a 5MP Iphone with a similar lens/CCD.

Out of this..

I much , much prefer Android way of doing things. Simply making a statement on how most users end up judging there phone and word of mouthing it.

:thinking::thinking::thinking:

The geek masses are convinced a 1 gig processor is going to be the cure for the lag ailments of Android. Its not.
The only times Ive seen Android phones run with extreme smoothness , speed and consistent stability are Rooted phones on custom ROMs. OR if theyre in the hands of very knowledgable users.

Sense UI has some beautiful widgets and additions. But its also kept phones from being updated with features , and on current gen phones results in lag and FC from incompatible apps at a pretty regular rate.

Thats the kind of thing someone new to Android may be turned off by. Particularly since most dont know the pluses of widgets/multitasking and there first impressions will almost entirely be based off of how fast and smooth they can do things in the phone.

This thread is a comparison to the Iphone. Far as Im concerned every android phone is better than an Iphone.
I hate how limited it is. But im not everyone. The only new thing "Passion" has that will clearly be better than an Iphone offering is a bigger and higher res screen.
Snapdragon being the instant "Android >>Iphone" isnt a conclusion that should be drawn at this point.

@ bruceo: there are two Iphone 3G in my household,me and my wife's. (won't be, as soon as the Milestone launch in canada in early 2010. I am antsy all over the Milestone.) Are you really want me to believe that if given the choice of the average iphone users BESIDE the 1/3 13yrs old users would not want multi-tasking or able to change the battery? I guess they don't like to be able to CUSTOMIZE their iphones either. It's all about control.! I know you don't like me to say that. I just got my BLUETOOTH ON MY 3G! A2DP and NO AVRCP!! come on! check that one out? I guess we don't need that either.
My wife and I would sure like to have all the above mentioned if given the choices.
Btw, everybody knows that the iphone is the best for playing games,PEROID! and at the same token 3/4 of the users are not 12yrs old,who can't be bothered or know about functionality but i am sure most of us do.Then why does some of the Droid users in this community, i am included ( soon to be) are ex-iphone user? I'll bet you my bottom dollar that the MULTI-TASKING will be on the iphone eventually( I wouldn't be surprised if it's on the coming iphone g4 or 4g).Remembered what you said " no need to" and I says that you'll eat your words, lol' It's all about control especially from apple. You don't need to be a rocket scientist to see the way apple do business "Steve J. ways or no way"
Why do the designer from Facebook for so many yrs quitted? check it out... and what he said?
Anyway, if you work for iphone or argue for the sake of arguing then it's fruitless,no pun intended.

Well I personally prefer multitasking and removable battery but fact it at this point with winmo and android devices multitasking requires you managing your memory and no matter what it is leading to lag and instability. I have run google maps with much smoother and more accurate GPS than was on my droid (droid is a bit jerky) while playing Itunes in the BG and taking a call. When you leave apps and return it is right where you left off. Wait till you are on the droid you'll see plenty of locked up windows with a popup that says force quit or wait as your background processes are locking up your unit. Most guys throw out the pandora in the background but when i last used pandora it was laggy as hell. Just look at the reviews in the android market. Who needs pandora anyway when you can have every song you ever wanted locally on device, not compressed and streamed.

I have used this 3Gs for 5 days now and run it ragged and although i would prefer a removable battery, even with 3G/WIFI/GPS/Bluetooth all on the battery seems to last almost twice as long.

You say "I just got my BLUETOOTH ON MY 3G! A2DP and NO AVRCP!!" Well guess what? They dont exist on Android period across the board. No voice activated dialing, no music player control, no lockscreen music control. Only audio transmission and return last call, now that is WEAK....

Facebook??? Who cares if the Dev quit. The facebook app on iphone is unbelieveable compared to Android and winmo. Androids FB app is the pits just wait till you try it out it is even worse than winmo and I didn't think it could get worse than that. You cant even make inbox replies....

It will be unfaired for me to elaborate on the Droid at this time ( I will find out in early 2010 when I get it in canada) because I haven't got the CHANCE or the privilege to use it.Like I said before I only had my hands on it for about 10mins because the store was so crowded on your U.S thanksgiving.Within the 10 mins I was awed by the multitasking abilities. The rest of the info that I gathered about the pros and cons are from this community, which I thought were very honest more than I can say for the Iphone users in the other 2 iphone forum sites that joined and for your informations,I was just as surprised to find that there are so many ex-Iphone Users here.I hope that some of them might actually read this post and put our debate to rest once and for all.
I've been using both the Iphone 3g for almost a year now and when I tried the Droid the screen resolution was much better, the audio was definitely better.I just felt the Droid was so much easier to use than the iphone. It just felt like I was using my laptop and I was sold. Let's put it this way,it's like going for a test drive a new car and you know straight away, wow, it's a nice car and it sure feels better than the you owned that you wanted all your life and something even better came along. Now you know you can replaced it.The best I can sum it up.What can I say.
Let's not go there, the Iphone has been out for a few years now and the Droid is only a few months old. So far what the Droid has done is stunting and I hate to see what this awesome phone is going to turn into?
I hate to perseverate, what have Iphone evolved into the last few years beside updated the S. I am sick of playing games and if I am into games, seriously I get a X-box and play with my friends on my 50 inch Sony.
I also detested that same old argument my iphone can play games and have more apps.We all know that and please enough already.I've 2 iphone 3g too.
Please do not go into the GPS area, google gps on this unit is second to none and it's one awesome beast.PEROID! it's only beta!!I have seen on youtubes and write-ups even the iphone suck-up writers have good things to say about the GPS on the Droid. It is pretty hard to get a good reviews on any Andriod phones this day unless it an Iphone, even it was a 1st gen Iphone.BTW, I don't read their reviews anymore if I wanted to, I can get it from the Droid community with honesty, especially the users with difference smartphones background.WHO SHOULD KNOW MORE ABOUT THEIR PHONES beside sometime writers who had for a couple of weeks!
Out of curiosity, why are you doing in this community,it don't looks like you 're getting an Android phone anytime soon? Are you a Devil advocate? If you're trying to change somebody's mind about the DROID, you're wasting your time. People who joined this community are people like me who are not satisfied with present phones and are ready to switch to an Android phone. In my case, I am ready for the Droid and so far I liked what read.
By next year when I get my actual Milestone and I'll tell you how I fair with it. I know it's not a perfect phone, don't fool yourself the iphone is far from it. I am willing to stick out and I am sure it's going to evolve into a awesome device.I also believed that it's the phone of the future.Just like Iphone found it's niche'with kids and women who want to do a couple e-mails and games as simple as possible. As for me, I like challenges and have fun with the Droid customizing. I am quite tech-savvy.
Bottom-line is, iphone is car with Automatic trans. and the Droid is a sport car with 6 speed manual trans. not everyone can drive properly.
To me, it is still the control thing about apple. That's why I'll never own a Mac,ever! I bought the Iphones because of the Jailbreak like many people that I know. With Iphone the novelty wears off very fast. A few people have told me and I tend to agree.

@@ I seriously doubt you owned a Droid. Sorry, that is my opinion and that's what gathered.

I would agree that multi-tasking is probably a power user feature that isn't that necessary, but still the iphone is just too simple. I mean, I have to quit an app to, say, check the weather or sports scores real quick? Real life is multi-tasking. Surely they can come up with something to enhance their user experience without degrading it. My ipod touch works fine for some of the things I do and I do like it. I got for nearly nothing as a promotion. Never would have spent the $399 on it. Just not worth it for what it does. The other thing that scares me is that if I ever have to send it to Apple for a battery replacement, it's within their rights to send me a refurb with a new battery instead of having to turn mine around in a timely manner. Are you f-ing kidding me? I get somebody elses old ipod that could have been dropped umpteen times but still works...for now? I think the same applies to the iphone. Not a fan of that business model AT ALL, particularly with the premium they charge.

Sorry for the question, but I really want to know. I currently use an iPhone, but hate ATT service, so I'm waiting for the Passion. Not being experienced with Android phones, however, I'm wondering what the differences will be between the two?

The main difference will be the availability of apps. The Apple platform has a 3 year head start on accelerated graphics apps and it will be a couple of years before any other platform, including Android catches up.

On the flip side, you're getting better hardware with more power with some of the alternative platforms, so there's is the potential for more powerful apps, sooner. That's my opinion, anyway.

At this point I'd be more interested in how this would compare to the Droid.
I like the Droid's screen and abilities but it seems to lack in style and is too heavy.
Oh,for crying out loud! I bet you that the weight of the phone came from reading some reviews and been imbedded in your brain. It happened to me also. When I was playing with the Droid It never occurred to me until I read a review about the weight of the phone A few ounces are not going to kill you and I bet that your wallet is much more heavier, unless you're broke,LOL'
Come on, the P-KB would have make up for the heft, if you don't like it, at least,is there.:D

I am glad that somebody finally agreed with me, It's always been a control thing with Apple which they're very good at.Control, control.
Where in the world you've to send in to get your battery changed, takes more than a week and cost over a hundred $ at their discretion. That's being kind already and if Steve J. was in a bad mood (god forbade) he decided to charge $500/ because he felt like it, what can you do? He has the tools to open the iphone for battery. A normal small cellphone battery usually goes for $30.00. Can you imagine an iphone battery cost more than your car battery.Ludicrous!!
All boil down to one thing "CONTROL" you take what they give you.

Nope. Multi-tasking is certainly not a power user feature. Let's take a look at PCs. How many people have more than one 'app' runnning at once? I'd say 100%. EVERYONE wants to be able to use more than one app at a time, regardless of the screen size.
Just like saying I want to buy a PC with NO MULTI-TASKING, forget it, would you buy a MAC with NO multitasking and work like the Ipnone 3Gs.?
I wouldn't think so either! and what so difference from a phone if there is a choice. The problem is the iphone users just can't get themselves to admit that their iphones got beat in this department.
I am for one, is sick and tired of their excuses, we've more apps and we don't really see any need for it. HUMBUG! you're too envious to admit it.
Maybe,if you gather up your GUTS and complain or BEG to Mr Steve J. he might be kind enough to give you the MULTITASKING in the next generation of Iphone 4G. For once, don't let apple be in CONTROL and tell apple that there are alternatives.
BTW,I am a owner of two iphones 3G.
Imagine this funny scenario. It would be worse than global warming for the Iphone Fanboys.
 What if we complained and Uncle Steve got mad and decided to charge us $500.00 if the battery need to be changed on our iphones. Also take away our game apps, especially,oh dreadful just to think about, the FARTAPPS and send us to our rooms. He been in control for so long we were kind of got used to it.

Well put! people are asking too much with this phone,it's not the miracle pills. If you're an iphone owner like me it is a very big improvement. Give it time to sort the bugs out. The android can do wonders. like anything else, they got to find out from the masses what are the bugs before they can fix it.This is only way they can address the issues.
If they knew what the problems are,we won't be here to discuss the difference issues but praising how good the phone is.

tell them like it is,they're still in the state of denial,if it was the other way around. The android will be ridicule right and left.

In regards to multitasking, I constantly yearn for it on my iPod Touch. The lack of replaceable battery doesn't bother me now, but it will bother me later. Let's face it. Apple does this so that when you bring the device in to the store to replace the battery, they can hopefully get you in to a new device.
I rest my case! Is that not CONTRLO? That was my point all along.

The only thing that matters is if the phone has and does what you want. You can't say one phone is better than another phone. Also you can't compare the iphone to the the Passion, since the Passion isn't even out yet. Thats like comparing the next gen iphone to the Passion, Apple is working on the next one and you know they have to be doing something big to try and stay ahead because if they don't they will lose.

The BEST phone is one that works easy and does what YOU want. Either way I think we can all agree that the iphone was responsible for changing the way we use phones today and competition is good. I hope the iphone blows away the Passion and then I hope the next Android phone blows away that iphone and so on. Just makes me happy to keep getting a better phone.

For the record I have a Droid Eris and if VW gets the iphone I may switch I may not, depends on what it can do.
