So, before I root...couple of ?'s

Hey gang -

Was on the forums earlier this year and got use to my eris being on v3 leak and not rooting - thought I would check again and find out this morning that we can root V3 now!!!! WOOHOO

I just have a couple of ?s about rooting that I am sure have been answered before but with my kids tugging at me it's hard to find the answer (thanks for your patience!)

- Does this give me live wallpapers?
- With rooting, I can switch between roms, correct? (any ROM recommendations would be great - i use my phone for fbook, twitter, sms, fantasy football, etc)
- outside of getting rid of the stupid preloaded crap from htc/verizon - what else does root get me?
- if there are some stock htc widgets/apps can I keep them (like how the music player is integrated to the lock screen)

Excellent choice, by the way. eu1's thread is very informative, detailed, and descriptive...you won't be in better hands.

Well, you'll have the ability to use live wallpapers, but they don't come automatically with rooting (unless the custom ROM you flash includes them). I don't really use live wallpapers since they do tend to drain your battery pretty quickly.

Check out zach.xtr's xtrROM or xtrSense for 2.1-based ROMs:

There's also lots of Froyo (2.2) ROMs out there, but I'll let others that have used them chime-in re. which they recommend.

Usually, a snappier, more responsive phone due to overclocking; more space for your apps (through pre-eliminating bloatware or other methods like cache2cache); ability to install root-only apps like wi-fi tether, shootme or drocap2, etc.

I'm not sure about this (unless you do an in-place root and keep your current setup (i.e., don't flash a custom ROM overtop of your current Android O/S)).

I am using xtrsense and it is almost exactly like nonroot 2.1 without lag....still has the music player built into the lock screen

For 2.2 I would go for Nonsensikal or KaosFroyo. I've never used Kaos myself because I dislike the vanilla theme, and haven't really found a metamorph/theme I really like, but I've heard only good things about KaosFroyo.

If you truly want Froyo, I have run Kaos, Nonsensikal and CELB, and I find Nonsensikal and CELB better than Kaos myself. These days, though, I am running xtrSENSE. I ran the Froyo ROMs for several months, and, while I tend to prefer vanilla Android to Sense and the HTC customizations, I really think that the Eris runs better on the two xtr ROMs than on anything else.

I tried xtrSense and didn't notice any major speed improvements over Nonsensikal. I compared a Linpack test on my phone running xtrSense to a Linpack test of someone running KaosFroyo (same OC speeds) and his blew mine out of the water. Maybe I'm missing some magical setting or something?
Also the problem I had with xtrSense is it loved to cycle through my music on the widget randomly, I still have no idea why. >.<

The eris i think is too slow to run froyo, no?

What do i get from froyo - more apps?

1. Check out Droid Eris Android Development - xda-developers and download the ROM of your choice.
2. Connect your phone to your computer and move the ROM that is a .zip onto your SD card. Make sure not to put the ROM into any folders, just directly onto your SD Card.
3. Disconnect your phone from your computer and turn your phone off. Boot into recovery by holding down the Volume Up and Power Button at the same time. Use your trackball to navigate and click it to choose an item.
4. Do a Nandroid Backup just in case anything goes wrong. Go to Backup/Restore > NAND Backup.
5. Go to Wipe and do a factory reset and Dalvik-cache wipe. (When updating ROMs, you only have to do a Dalvik-cache wipe unless you are having problems, then do both)
6. Flash your ROM. Go to Flash zip from sdcard > Choose your ROM.
7. After it is done flashing, reboot and enjoy your ROM. The first boot may take 2-10 minutes.

In my experience my Eris runs faster on Froyo with it only OC'd to 710.

If you go to KaosFroyo, use V37 instead of V38. V38 has some issues that require you replacing the kernel, and it has been a little quirky for me. V37 was flawless as far as I could tell.
