Hey guys. So I'm new to all this android stuff, and recently I bought an Evo. My friend was showing me all this cool stuff he was doing with his rooted incredible, so I decided to do the same with my Evo. The problem is, I don't know crap when it comes to hi-tech stuff. I can do more than the average joe, but I suck at computer programming.
Anyways, I spent about 2 weeks doing research, like many people advised me to do. I decided to root using unrEVOked, and I took all the steps in advance to make it work. I downloaded unEVOked 3 reflash package off their site, and the android USB driver. I downloaded the driver onto my Evo by right-clicking on My Computer, properties, device manager, etc. Long story short, under Device Manager there's Android USB Devices now. I was following the rooting forum on xda-developers and it told me to uninstall HTC sync before plugging my phone into my comp. I don't know how to uninstall HTC sync, but I went to settings and disabled auto-sync. I plugged it into my comp, and started running unEVOked. It effed up a couple times (specifically, it got stuck on "pushing recovery, the very first step), so I restarted my phone / the unrEVOked reflash tool a couple times, but finally it got passed the "pushing recovery" step. My phone restarted, and then the reflash tool got stuck on "running root". I waited about 5-7 min, and nothing happened. I didn't touch my phone at all during the process, except when the reflash tool told me to select USB using the volume buttons. After restarting, my phone screen was on the slide to unlock screen, and to restate, the reflash tool was stuck on "running root". After 5-7 min, I slid the unlock bar down, hoping it would do something. It did not.
My reason for posting this is: Did I mess up by not waiting long enough/unlocking my phone? Was it the HTC sync thing that messed it up? I also have dropbox installed, which someone said could mess it up. I have yet to try it without dropbox installed. Did I miss anything along the way? Do I need this SDK thing that I keep reading about, or is that for incredibles only?
More Info: I run Windows Vista on a Dell laptop. It's fairly new but a little sluggish, even though I have 3 gigs of RAM ( but that's a whole different story ). My Evo is using Launcher Pro instead of HTC sense.
