Do not buy Android OS yet!

I think that for the hardware/software configuration, the Motorola Droid is the best choice for Verizon. I'm loving it and I already read the manual in .pdf.

However, I'm waiting as late as Q2, 2010. The Google handset will likely be out in January and feature OS 2.1 and a 1GHz cpu. That processor alone is worth waiting for. The same is true for the identical processor in the HTC Passion via VZW, rumored to be out for the holidays.

In addition, the HTC Passion has some very inviting GUI tweaks that the Motorola lacks. The HTC UIC includes SEVEN virtual desktops, whereas the Droid has only three.

I'm waiting until I can make a three-way comparison before I buy. Can't wait to dump my Blackberry!

What's your opinion? Is this a good judgement or a flawed judgement??

Yeah I agree with you in that it would probably be smart to wait if you have a phone that you can stay with for a few months... BUT I ended up switching to the HTC Droid Eris like 3 weeks ago due to having a crappy LG Voyager that kept giving me issues... And before that had a Blackberry Pearl that just kept freezing etc.

Buttt I'm loving my Eris... It does everything I need it to do and more. Just remember, there will always be a "better phone" coming out in the future... I just felt like I was going to keep waiting forever for a better phone you know? :-/

My interest the Google phone was squashed when I saw it had no keyboard, that and the fact that it's sold by them which means no carrier deals on pricing for new contracts. (other than possibly TMobile)

Either way it will good for all of us, as it will push the envelope and force other manufacturers to keep pace.

Getting my first smartphone (BB 8330) about 6 months ago got me into this craze and Android just pushed me over the edge. I have never been geeky about phones, but now I read all the news about these like a little kid.

I am going to look long and hard at the gPhone when it comes out, especially if it is unlocked and CDMA and GSM. Being a fairly heavy data user, I don't know how I would like the lack of a physical keyboard. But the speed of the system piques my interest. If the gPhone isn't what I and every one is looking for, they are certainly pushing the industry to make step changes. The bar is rising significantly. Apple will release the NexGen iPhone sometime 1Q.I'm sure that shortly after the release of the gPhone and the new iPhone everybody will be releasing next generation phones. You will find something you like.

yeah I'm still on the fence but if there is no keyboard version of the gphone I probably will get the Droid.
HTC, Sony, google, Apple: hello? People want a real keyboard. Motorola, hello? it shouldn't be a flat and cramped one either.
This is the same Apple mentality of offering a one-button mouse instead of a 2 button mouse because it is 'simple' (of course, I have a 5 button/scrollwheel intellimouse and can't work without it!)

And haha, yeah Mac..I am a Mac lover and was shocked when I brought home my first iMac and saw that mouse. I still have it all sealed up in the bag, maybe in a few years it will be worth something to a museum of stupid technology. haha

Apple has trouble making a mouse with buttons anyway. I grabbed a Mighty Mouse when they came out and brought it back the same day. What a piece of garbage. lol

Don't buy a computer right now either. Quad core will be obsolete next year when the 6 core desktop CPU's are out. But wait.. don't buy one then either because 6 core will be obsolete in 2011 when 8 core desktop CPU's are out!

Don't assume people want a physical keyboard. I have always gone with a virtual over physical because I wear tight pants and physical keyboards tend to make phones fat and unattractive while in pockets. :/ maybe I just dress a little on the ***/girly side.

Life is too short. Why keep waiting when I can enjoy something now? I bought my Android 1.5 phone knowing that in 12 months, when I'm eligible for an upgrade, I can get the next gen phone that has had its bugs worked out.

No, you want a physical keyboard. Not everyone does. The virtual keyboards these days are really good now--So good that I purposefully avoid phones with hardware keyboards because I don't want to deal with the weight or breakage-inducing hinges.

A lot of people still want a physical keyboard. As much as I like the on-screen - and am able to type relatively quickly on it - when I need to type something long-winded, I'm very thankful to have an actual keypad with actual tactile feedback. I understand that not everybody will use it, but a large number of people chose the Droid for just that reason.

I must say that as little as I actually use the physical keyboard, I would never give it up for an exclusively touch model. Not a chance. No matter how good the touch may be, it's still not real enough for me.

I wonder what percentage of Droid owners don't use the keyboard hardly ever. Based on reviews and reports, my guess is about 75%. Is there a poll on this here somewhere?

There's also quite a number of people waiting for the Droid hardware but without a hardware keyboard and the downsides they bring. My guess is the HTC Passion or equivalent will blow the doors off the Droid in sales numbers. Heck, some people are already buying the Eris over the Droid, even though it has far inferior hardware (silly ARM11 CPU--die already!), doesn't have free Nav yet, and is stuck on an older version of Android. That's quite a bit to give up just because you prefer that form factor!

The good thing about Android is you keyboard freaks will still have options with a keyboard, at least for a while... Hehe, just kidding. To each their own.

they take up most of the screen when you type and full screen games with even simple controls won't work on a keyboardless phone.

I'm secretly hoping that the Nexus One/Passion will take off and the Eris will ride in its coattails, OS updates and all... In the mean time, I now have an affordable phone that does that job and then some; as a plus, it's a major upgrade from my crappy ex-BlackBerry. Worth it!

I personally could not wait any longer.. I was on a Samsung Blackjack still that was 4 years old. That being said, when I get a new phone in 2 years.. they will have even faster and more efficient devices.

There will always be something faster next year. What it comes down to is how long do you want to wait to play with the beautiful android platform?
