Root Networking on the Droid

I have UD1.0.0 and have noticed the Wireless & Network Settings has sections to configure VPN settings and Proxy settings.

I don't know much about setting these up but would love to get a VPN set up b/t my Windows 7 desktop, my D1, and possibly my XP laptop.

How do I go about this? I have searched, tried, and failed. Any help or resources are appreciated.

I'm not sure if stock Froyo has VPN support built in, but I have a VPN set up between my Droid (using CyanogenMod) and my Linksys router (running Tomato) at home using OpenVPN. This allows me to use my home cable Internet connection over 3G or wifi.

The setup for this was all fairly complicated. I got OpenVPN working on my router and laptop(s) last year. I forgot how I did it and had to relearn some of it in order to get it working on my Droid.

I got it working on the Droid more for the challenge of it and not out of necessity.

Good luck!

I am just happy to hear it can be done directly. I have since been able to use LogMeIn to create an online way access my desktop but it really sucks on the Droid. I see two apps (5VPN and NeoRouter) that are designed for mobile configuration but I still need to research what settings to use to set up the VPN.

I am excited to hear. I have been rooted since Eclair but obviously don't know the first thing about getting a VPN to work with my Droid. I am not sure if I am messing up the port forwarding with my router, the network settings. Is it possible that the ROM or kernel that I am using wouldn't support VPNs?

hang on,
First, whats your reason for doing this?

Not being an ass, I'm just trying to find out why you need a VPN Connection.

To access your home PC while you are away from your home network would be my first assumption.

Aren't there a crap ton of apps for this? some even allowing you to use your droid as the keyboard and mouse for your desktop.

Yeah, I use LogMeIn. That's a pretty handy app. Pretty pricey too, but I justified it in that I work in a laboratory where we do a lot of simulation work and being able to access simulations that are in progress on the go is very handy. Of course, it's hard to justify $30 for an app. Try a different ROM/kernel. VPNs do require some low-level stuff that might involve the kernel, but I don't know much about Linux.

Yes, certain kernels do not have VPN support either compiled into the kernel or as a module. I am using P3Droid's kernel with VPN support compiled into the kernel.

Upon rereading your original post, I believe we may be talking about two different things.

Do you want:

1. Remote desktop access from your Droid to your Windows desktop? or

2. A VPN (virtual private network) between your Droid and your home internet connection? This provides you with a secure connection using either 3G or an insecure wifi connection. All network activity on your Droid will be routed through your home internet connection.

If 1, something like LogMeIn is what you want. If 2, you need to have have a router that supports an alternative firmware such as DD-WRT or Tomato.

I think he wants 1. LogMeIn is great, but maybe he wants a FOSS alternative to it, which would be VPN.

I was hoping to have both but remote desktop is the more important issue. I have LogMeIn to connect my work computer and home computer. I haven't really come to grips with spending $30 on LogMeIn Ignition (the wireless product) but it sounds as if that may be the only way to go?

I have seen a number of apps for this but need a forum that outlines how to set this up on the Droid. Unless I am blind I haven't seen it on my usual forums or found it in general web searches.

Oh wait, duh, how did I forget? Set up a VNC server on your home desktop and go download android-vnc-viewer from the Market.
