Noob w/ a CDMA Hero...rooting help!

Hi everyone...new to these forums. My wife has a Sprint Hero and I would like to root it but I'm severely ignorant w/ this phone. I have a Palm Pre and have had no problems hacking it and it runs like a beast! I have not had the best of luck from other forums when I've asked for help w/ rooting my wife's phone.

With that said, what is the *best* way to root the Hero? I've seen so many different ways that my brain is beginning to melt away into oblivion. Here's my questions:

1) Which way is the best way to root, i.e. a complete root?
2) Is there anything I need to do to make sure she doesn't lose any data and if so is there a program I need to d/l for her phone?
3) From what I've read, w/ Android phones you *flash a ROM* which to me sounds like adding a theme (per Palm Pre) to your phone. This is something I'd like to do to change the look of her phone and speed it up from stock speed. Is there anything in particular I need to do for this?

I would like her phone to be faster (read: less laggy) during normal operation. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Chris

After browsing around to find another route of rooting, I found the "one click root APK for CDMA Hero" thread and so far things appear to be working. Here's what I've done so far so please correct me if I missed something:

1) Downloaded and installed the heroroot010.apk from One click Root APK for CDMA Hero - xda-developers

2) I had already downloaded Rom Manager and then I flashed the ClockWorkMod Recovery

3) Performed a Nandroid backup, but I don't think it worked because it said something weird about the SD card not being available?!?!?

Now I'm a bit lost...LOL!

Can someone please help me with this? I posted pretty much the same thing on another forum and I can't seem to get any answers. Here's the link and it will show pics I took of my wife's Hero during a Nandroid backup. Do these look right?

*UPDATE*

Apparently, everything I did was normal and things should be in working order now. Now, I just need to learn how to flash a custom ROM and which one to use. :)

Do you want a sense ui rom or an aosp rom?

As of right now I have no clue what either of those are. I want something that speeds my wife's phone up, doesn't make her lose all her data, is cool looking, etc. I know my response seems a little uneducated as I've yet to fully understand flashing ROMs. I JUST learned how to root a few days ago and now I'm good to go there.

What would you suggest? Can you give me a link or a brief overview between a sense ui or aosp ROM?

Thanks man!

Plenty of great roms with great developers out there. Sense UI is essentially what the Hero came with, developed by HTC. Look at these Sense UI

[ROM] 08/30/10 | Fresh Hero 2.4.0 | Incremental Update For Freshness - xda-developers This rom is Fresh 2.4.0, probably as close to stock as you can get with some added features.

[ROM] NFX Sprint 2.31.651.7 STOCK Deoxed/Odex Updated:10/14/2010 - xda-developers This rom is based off the most recent Sprint update. If you want to overclock, nfinite has some good kernels for that;)

[ROM][UPDATE 10/25] LiquidSense 2.1 Stable|PngOpt|ZipAlgn|Odex|No Bloat - xda-developers This sense rom has all the Sprint bloatware removed and this is built for speed

AOSP roms are vanilla android os. You will have to do more customizing to the phone, but you will have the benefit of being on 2.2 which will bring added options that 2.1 does not have. There are 2 froyo/2.2 roms out there

[ROM][GPL][NONSENSE] aospMod v0.9.7 | AOSP 2.2.1 (Froyo) [11/05/2010] - xda-developers This rom is built for speed

Look here for help in setting up CyanogenMod 6.1 http://androidforums.com/sprint-hero-all-things-root/184286-setting-up-cm6.html This rom has more features and just as fast

So the gapps (Google Apps right?) will have all of her contacts, email, etc. on there? What about the rest of her apps she downloaded? Also, what about the App Market...where did it go? Sorry for all the questions.

Thanks!

Download the second one, sorry for the bad zip.

As long as your contacts were backed up with google, the contacts will be there after you sign in. The market will be in the gapps file

Okay, well, right after I realized my mistake, I flashed back to the backup I made from the Nandroid. All is back to normal, but I'd like to do it again...just not tonight.

I cannot figure out how to sync her contacts to Google. When you click on "People" shouldn't there be a 'sync' option?!? Another question for you...she has lots of other apps she's downloaded both for herself and our children. When I flash to the custom ROM, how do I get those back?

Again...sorry for ALL the questions and thanks for being patient w/ this noob. :)

Have you downloaded Titanium Backup? This will help in the redownload of applications from the market. DonB just started a thread that might help;)

As far as the contacts are concerned, next to a contact it should either say google or phone. If they say google, you are good to go:D If they say phone, just redo the contact and save. There might be an easier way with the phone contacts but you might have to search, not sure:thinking:

I have not d/l Titanium Backup, but just went to AppBrain and set it up to download. :) I'll search for DonB's thread on it.

I'll have my wife make sure all of her contacts say 'Google' and not phone. Hopefully that will get the ball rolling in the right direction.

Thanks!

P.S. I'm sure more questions will come...stay tuned. ;)
