So Tired of my Eris

Got the Eris about a year ago (11/21) and I'm so bored with it. The phone is so slow and I just wish I could upgrade at this point (on a 2 year contract). My brother just got the DroidX and I'm very jealous.

Just felt like venting.

Any ideas as to how I can get a new phone without paying full price?

I got my Eris in EARLY Jan this year. I can't get a new phone until 9/2011. Since my Eris has been rooted, I love it. Not to say that I'm not jealous of all of those peeps who have the latest, greatest.. but I figure that by the time I can get a new phone, LTE will be out. Phones with better processors will be available. And hopefully, if Google stand by it's "1 a year" Android OS schedule, I'll get a phone with the latest OS. Until then, my Eris does everything I need it to do.

If you find you just CAN'T live w/o a new phone, try buying certified used online. There are several sites and the savings are substantial.

I LOVED my Eris and was perfectly happy and content with it. Then Best Buy rolled out the Inc on their last "Free Phone Friday." I have 3 phones (including mine) on my family share and all 3 were eligible for an upgrade so I decided to let Best Buy give me an Inc for free. If the Inc wasn't free and I had to use my main line upgrade (NE2 from VZW) I wouldn't have upgraded because a rooted Eris is a damn fine phone, IMO.

You should root your phone. The process is very simple and only takes <20 minutes.
After rooting you can try our different ROMs (Post #4 of ErisApps and ROMS)
I use xtrROM. If you would like to have Android v2.2 running on your Eris try KaosFroyo.

The conclusion I came to was that the Droid Incredible is, in my opinion, still the best Android Phone. I got Droid Incredible yesterday and my rooted Eris is going to my brother who has never had a smartphone.

Lots of ways to get a phone early: use another family member's upgrade date, buy it used, switch with a family member(doubt that will happen lol), next go around with phones switch to a 1 year contract(thats what I do and it works well), or just pay full price. Yes, 600 bucks is a tall order, but think about it: it is a technological device you use more than all your other personal posessions COMBINED(at least for me) so don't buy a new ipod and those two xbox games you want and you have enough money for a new phone. Plus it makes you love your phone a whole lot more.

I upgraded two weeks ago after 11 months on a 24 month contract. You pay the same discounted price for the phone as a new customer would. In my case $149 for an Incredible.

I also looked at all the phones in the store and liked the Inc the best as the others were either too big for my tastes or too cheap looking.

I did the upgrade by calling customer service and asking about doing an early upgrade as my 3rd Eris had trackball and usb port issues. They waived the $20 early upgrade fee.

Why would you ever downgrade from Android to Apple?

I bought my Eris the day it came out by renewing a 2-year contract. About a week ago I got a flyer in the mail from Verizon stating that I was eligible for an upgrade at the 2-year price. It wasn't until a couple days ago that this reflected on MyVerizon and let my browse the phones as though I was going to upgrade. I'm personally waiting for the Incredible HD that will be LTE compatable <drools>. If rumor proves to be true it could be here as early as late December/early January.

Got tired of my eris too and android in general as well. I decided to get something that just works out of the box but limits me so that I can't spend hours changing crap up and whatnot. I also got burned out on touch screen.

SO, my upgrade rolled around and I upgraded to a Blackberry Bold 9650 on the 4th of November and have been thoroughly pleased with it.

Rooting and Froyo has basically gave me a new phone. It's amazing how a ROM developed by a third party can be better than the actual developers ROM. Before my phone was laggy, buggy, and unstable. Now it's smooth as hell.

You will not regret rooting.

Good call, knitpurlgurl. I'm in the same boat as you. Using my four Droid Eris units until spring 2012. Rooted, ROMed and tweaked, the Eris has been a diamond in the coal mine.

Comparing the product to phones with other OS's (that rhyme with "flimsyian") the Eris with Android 2.1 is killer. Gonna run the wheels off it. May miss out on phones like the Incredible or X, but I'll probably forget all about 'em when whatever comes later hits the market...if the Eris works well enough, at least get back your investment and avoid the cost of a premature phone upgrade....

I agree. After rooting and installing a Froyo based ROM, it's a new phone. The apps and widgets that continually come out help the overall experience as well.

I will be looking for a larger phone when my contract is up, however. I've seen a few Android phones from 3.7" screens up to the DX 4.3" and must say that it really helps the overall enjoyment of the device.

Any issues I had on stock 2.1 HTC have been resolved by rooting. XTRSense, XTRRom and Workshed's Froyo ROM plus using Launcher Pro Plus. The overclocks, underclocks, etc help speed it up and stretch the battery life.

I'm 8 months into my 2 year contract. I wasn't even eligible for an upgrade. I'm also not paying an early upgrade free. I didn't pay anything.

Long story short was that the guy's supervisor I was talking to use to have the Eris and had the same problems. I was on my second Eris. I guess I got lucky from what I've read here in the forums.

I am lucky to have a family member as a verizon manager, plus with five lines I pretty much get anything I want (seriously not bragging). I only say this because I really don't want anything but my eris. Wife has the DX, and it is just too big. The only thing I would want out of my eris is a flash for the camera, but I don't take many pics anyways. Thought about the Inc but again my main thing is size. After rooting, using xtrROM, and launcher pro, my phone is awesome. I don't understand, but "we" on these forums truly are a small minority in the big picture. I am by far no where near as versed in rooting, cooking, or programming as most on here, but seem to be a guru to the general public and friends I come in contact with about cell phones. I am sure a rooted Inc is superior to the eris, but after going through so many phones I am just finally very satisfied with my eris.
