GPS working on the Archos 101!!!

This should work with any android device since both GoogleMaps and GPS Mouse were not tailor made for the Archos.

What i used:

Nokia 5800XM (GPS capable and running on Symbian)

ExtGPS (Symbian App that makes the GPS available through bluetooth)

GPS Mouse (Bluetooth GPS Driver for Android)

Google Maps (Generic Mapping Software)

The thing that i don't know is if bluetooth can do two devices at once since both my Internet and GPS are gonna be tethered to the phone with it.

I live in a blindspot so even if i were to tether my internet now, i won't actually connect to anything because there's practically a hill next door.

If anybody can recommend and offline GPS mapping software, particularly for the Philippines, southern tagalog. Please! Let me know.

PS: That arrow is off by about 10 meters. I live next door. If anybody wants to try this. PLEASE go ahead so we can confirm that i didn't just run into a fluke or something.

GPS Mouse. It apparently disables the onboard GPS and replaces it with the bluetooth one. There's nothing to set on the mapping applications, they just see one GPS device and use that.

hey do you have a regular bluetooth GPS unit you can try with?

funnily I also have a N5800 lol but in terms of size, battery life, and ease of use one of those cheap little external BT GPS units is much preferable. I never ever want to see the N5800 interface again ROTFL

Wait I thought achos 70/101 did not have onboard gps?
if it has onboard gps why bother with external?

It has wifi based gps. Similar to your ipod touch.

Yes, it's a phone.

As you probably know. GPS is a common feature on smartphones nowadays. What the ExtGPS app does is let that GPS be accessible to other devices, and the Archos is capable connecting to the phones GPS and get its coordinates from there.

If I Tether my DX to this thing via wifi, would it pick up the GPS from the Wifi from the phone?

Can't test because i can't connect this thing to ad-hoc. Which is the only thing the nokia supports. Both your internet and gps has to go through bluetooth.

I know about the wifi GPS tho. When i tether the ipod to the nokia via ad-hoc, it only gets the GPS coordinates when i first turned on the wifi. So google maps on the ipod doesn't actually follow me when i'm moving. Not sure if this is the normal way when embedding GPS on the wifi tether, but it's not real time on mine.

AFAIK, it's an android thing. None of the other android slates can connect to adhoc without some sort of hack. They've been trying to get google to add that feature for the last 2 years. Maybe they'll address it in Android 3.0 but for now, it's not supported.

For now, the only wireless connection you can get an android slate to do is either infrastructure wifi or bluetooth. Most mobile phones are only capable of adhoc wifi.

To allow ad-hoc access in Android, here is a hack I've found in the net but I haven't tried it yet. Just sharing. I just got Archos 101 and started tinkering with it today. I can't seem to enable internet access by Bluetooth and Tethering with my Nokia E72 phone.

"I did it manually... Check the ROM for files for "RT2870STA". It's in there, 3 or 4 times the same file. Open the android_fs.tar and the data.tar as well!! Use 7-zip to browse the archive, or you can unpack these *.tar files to a seperate folder and then search for "RT2870STA". Open the RT2870STA.DAT files with a texteditor and replace "Infra" for "Adhoc". Close the files and choose save. Then go back to the *.tar files and browse them again with 7-zip. Copy the edited files to the right folders (overwrite the .DAT files) and copy your complete script folder to your SD card. Insert it into your tablet and then turn it on... You must enter the SSID manually in your tablet because it can't find the SSID of your Adhoc network by itself!"
