2GB of Internal Memory vs 8GB from Dinc, DX & D2

There are many threads on people first impressions, with their pros and cons. However, the only things holding me back from getting this phone is the low Internal Memory spec. The Samsung has 2GB of Internal Memory compared to 8GB from the other Droid boys (Dinc, DX, D2). I am concerned of phone lag due to 6GB less of internal memory than its competition. I was told that you cannot save apps/widgets to the SD Card.

So which leads to the questions I have.
1.) Is the 2GB Internal Memory really that important?
2.) What is the purpose of the SD Card, except for Photos & Music?
3.) Why would samsung put a phone out with 3x times less memory than its competition?

The 2GB's of internal memory is more like a built in micro SD. Whereas something like the Incredible has 8GB's of internal memory with 2 dedicated to app storage, the Fascinate has 2 gigs for apps and pictures.

1. For some it is, for others it isn't. In my opinion, 2GB's is plenty for app storage, and the 16 gig card the phone comes with would be more than enough for pictures and videos.

2. You could get a more scientific answer from a search, but to the common man it really has no other "purpose".

3. Well the Vibrant and Captivate have 16 gigs of internal storage, but they come with no SD card and are plagued with a read/write issue that causes lag. Verizon probably made the decision to include less internal storage.

Overall, you won't suffer lag from a shortage of memory unless you fill up all 2 gigs with apps. If anything I would check out the rumored RAM shortage. I think that would have a bigger impact than anyhing, although it seems to be a non issue as well.

EDIT: Congratulations on the first post and welcome to the forums!

1. No, especially when 2.2 comes
2. When 2.2 comes out, you can use it for apps...if you root, you can use it for apps
3. Not sure it was Samsung (the carriers had an impact), but either way I believe the Epic has even less. The OG Droid had less as well and it did fine with memory and lag (for its time) and it flies with 2.2

As a lot of people have stated, you probably won't use that amount of memory for apps either way, but for peace of mind you can root or wait for 2.2. I personally never had an issue with my OG Droid and I never rooted it, and I probaby had 20-30 apps on it with various widgets.

They actually came with a 2GB card. I think they all came out to 18GB total except the Epic, which I think comes out to 17GB.

1. The 2GB internal memory isn't too important in my opinion vs. having an 8GB internal memory because the only thing that it's really used for is apps.

2. The purpose of the SD card is for photos, music, any apk files, and basically anything else you'd want to put onto a memory card. Find what you'll be using it for. 16GB is plenty and if you need more, you can buy more.

3. Not sure

Maybe a bit OT, but how are you liking the SF ?
I'm in the same boat as you (have both the X and the SF)
Guess I am still pretty much up in the air....

FWIW, the first day I DL'd every app I think I want or need from the Market. 75 or so and it took about 200mb of the internal storage. Yesterday I put the 1GB lag fix on and there was still a few hundred MB left. I have since put on the smaller 768mb lag fix just because the performance was the same. But yeah even pre-froyo the 2gb or 1.5gb is plenty for me and what I need

Which lag fix are you talking about that is 768mb? I saw the one in the market but its only for the vibrant and captivate

Why do they take up so much space???
Got me. We both might be [H] for PC's but phones all I can do is follow tutorials on rooting and such like. I dont honesty know much more than following others directions. Good news is much OCing those who do know can do it and its pretty simple to follow their guides. It seems like the fact they started at 1GB and cut the size in half within 24 hours seems noteworthy. But yes I am pretty clueless about all the smartphone rooting business et al

You're on [H] too? Hahaha. Nice. Just as supportive a community as this one, but with PCs instead. I feel much more at home there, but anroid hasn't been out as long as Windows, so go figure!

This is a great community though. I have completely made the Droid X exactly what I want, at least as much as one can with software. It's the actually hardware shortcomings and design issues that are pushing me toward the Fascinate, which will show up for me tomorrow ... oh, and that SuperAMOLED screen! :D

I like all the space I can get :) I would gladly exchange the flash for the 16gb that the Tmo version has. Cameras on phones are impulse use, but it would be nice to have more space for tunes and vids.

My N900 has 32gb built in and I have that and a 32gb microsd almost full- Use it as a media player. IMO, it kind of sucks as a smartphone.

I have my movies loaded on the Inc's 6.6gb free internal storage and my 32gb with MP3's, game roms and apps. Saying 6.6gb of space is not missed seems a little off to me, but I am a media hound.

added:

The Inc has 768mb (not counting the 6.6gb) for apps, but not possible to use it all- it caps out after about 500mb "low on space" error, even with 250mb free. Apps2sd for me now. App does not offer it, I do not install it.

Anyone know the reason they decided to give the Fascinate so much less internal memory? Its the only thing other droid owners I've met have over my phone. :(

wow diving it an old one

i look at it this way, we d be better off with the ton of memory on the captivate but at least we have more than the epic 4g (1gb). really to me i stored everything on the sdcard and i dont have 2k apps so 2 gb is more than adequate for me.

Im not sure why it matters....you could be a complete app whore and still not fill up the 2gb's. ....dont let the numbers "bigger is better" get you thinking it is a lesser device because it is not. I have all sorts of things going on, I never even look at my memory usage, I use my phone, I dont obsess over memory and dont even use task killers, I dont even kill processes....i have tons of apps and mods and use it like I want and I just checked mine...i still have over 1.15 gigabytes of room left out of 2 gigabytes of internal memory and 14.7 gigs free out of the 16 gigs card memory...

I thought my ears were burning.:D Yeah until recently prior to me going back to stock, I had voodoo installed which take the internal memory free down to 1.31GB of that I was using over 700mb for apps, I had 200 or so. This left me bout 600mb free which probably would have been good for another couple hundred apps [depending on the app of course; same are a few dozen kb others multiple mb]. But yeah unless you are even worse than me with apps, the SF does have plenty of room for apps. Things will only get better once we get 2.2.
Now sdcard wise I keep that sucker pretty full just so I can watch stuff when Im bored. Now formatted mine is only 14.7GB I think but I keep about 13GB full on it. But thats a lot of video/movies. Im talking entire seasons of Sopranos and Family Guy and maybe a dozen DVD rips.

thats odd, my sd card showed 15.8Gb when formatted when new

Yeah I was asking is because the extra memory would be useful to me. I've completely obliterated my sd card with music and movies (mine only shows 14.73 too btw) and yes I am an admitted app addict. I don't know how many apps I have but I only have 877 mb left for more. And my less tech savvy counterparts only understand bigger numbers mean better. Super Amoled and Hummingbird processor mean nothing to them so I was just looking for a good excuse on why the memory got nerfed.
