Iphone 4 or Android?

Hi,
I am currently using Nokia e71. I have never ever tried out Iphone or Android, didn't have much cash that time.
Now, I am planning to buy the best deal within this month, and budget doesn't matter.

I always wanted to buy Iphone as it was and kept on being rated the best technology a mobile could ever have. But a lot of my friends have started to buy android based phones as well. Now I feel so confused as I totally like Iphone as obviously I would be switching from Nokia E71.
I like Iphone as I have no idea and I never followed the android technology.

I hope in here, there are a lot of people who would have switched from Iphone 3g/4 to Android.
Android users, if you could state reasons why do u love android, as that would be a great help and help me decide.

You can get all of those on both platforms. Except it appears that you are doing alot of text-based interactions... and since you are coming from a Nokia e71, you may want something with a physical keyboard... which you are only going to get from an Android. Point for Android.

You should also take into consideration whether you use iTunes or not. If you are in need of music support and you have purchased all of your music from iTunes... Then a point goes to iPhone.

If you are traveling alot you should take into consideration what network you want to be on... though that point will fade as soon as the iPhone hits Verizon.

As for Facetime... I notice that you call it by name, as if you have people that you want to 'facetime' chat with? But at the same time your friends are changing over to Android phones... Keep in mind that the video support for iPhone and Android are not compatible. So this depends heavily on who you want to video chat with...

Lastly, you should take into consideration that the iPhone doesn't have nearly the customization options that allows Android to be as functional and efficient as you can come up with... so BIG point for Android.

However, this in effect also makes the iPhone comparatively MUCH simpler. So if you are not tech savvy, or you just aren't a fan of technology, BIG point for iPhone for out-of-the-box simplicity.

If you have friends who have either technology device, ask them to give you a quick tutorial on the phone. Then, if possible, play with the phones.

Each, out of the box, will provide you a somewhat different experience. If you want something that meets your criteria right out of the box get an iPhone. On the downside, how it looks on day one will be, for the most part, how it looks on day 101 or 1001. With Android you can install apps to provide you the functionality you seek and you can choose between multiple apps to find the user interface that you prefer. With iPhone there's only so much that Apple will let you change...

Yeah, that is indeed a point I may consider. But of the android I browsed recently, HTC or samsung galaxy, I don't think they have a physical keyboard support.
And yes, many of the users say that iphone has the best touch pad. How true u think is that?

I have never bought music from Itunes. I have been always downloading music from torrents, so no Itunes.

I am not situated in the US. I put up in Thailand. So the networks are pretty different here.

This is a point I would have to look for as yes, it is that most of my friends are going for Android instead of iphone

Considering the money into criteria now, Iphone 4 here, without any contracts will cost me about 880 USD here. Now of the android, we have many many phones. Now in that, what phone do u suggest would and is the best rite now. HTC/Imobile/samsung/Sony

Cool so that means, that facetime is not a problem anymore if I go for android or iphone.

Seriously though, please don't tell me you're light speed re-embodied as... 'fart king'... all he did was preach to the heavens of Windows Phone 7 and bash android in anyway he could...

I will say that you have a valid point though. With the new windows mobile, its being tied into Xbox live pretty tight, which I think should end up working out really well for games. Think of Steam, but on your phone. Hell, that would be nice to have on android. A steam client that offers games as well as their chat and user network.

Having had used both platforms I can say I am on the fence still. iphone is extremely userfriendly and much smoother with the apps and functionality and easy of use. Limited on things with apple though. I personally am a bit overwhelmed with this android stuff and am half tempted to just go with a simple non-android phone and get an ipod touch 4 that can do the apps, internet and facetime.

Theoretically, we will see games being made specifically for this platform (kinfd of like games for Windows). Having said that, if you don't own a 360, all you are missing out on is gamerscore/tag types of things. You should still be able to consume all the Windows 7 Mobile games you are willing to dish out the cash for.

From my point of view I don really want to play games on my phone. Owning a phone is to communicate not playing games. I rather play games at home with my 42" flat LED screen and less battery consuming? LOL.

Android is a lot more friendly with unlocking and using in other countries. Iphone you have to jailbreak. Video chat is a lot better on android devices because their hardware is better and I would say qik beers facetime flat out. I personally recommend android from T-Mobile. Friendly to unlock plus everything that iphone does something done better plus open source system

Android is a lot more friendly with unlocking and using in other countries. Iphone you have to jailbreak.

I honestly wouldn't use this as a way to decide. Jailbreaking the iPhone is about as hard as rooting your droid. Perhaps a minor inconvenience is all. If it is that big a deal, a factory unlocked phone can also be purchased...

You could wait and have both...the word is that the ground work has been started to open iboot port iPhone 4 and iPad as well. I have froyo running on my old 3G and it's a decent experience. I wouldn't use it as my primary handset, but I might it I could get it running on my 3GS. When i4 get open boot support, you can have a decent phone, a community of folks who support it (not apple) doing what you want to do with it, when verizon gets on board, you can go CDMA, or right now with tmo or AT&T...which isn't bad depending where you live.

Motorola is garbage, and Sprint gouldnt find their ass even if they really made an effort to, so my other choice would be Samsung, on any carrier except sprint (I live in Addison Texas so my 3G speeds are anywhere from 3-4Mbps down 1.5 up with AT&T...and that's not terrible) but since you travel, Verizon might be the way to go.

Since you like games, iOS will render HW accelerated OpenGL ES, but the Droid port currently will not. Either the Galaxy or the heavy weight HTC handsets will give a great experience.

The Cydia community is pretty quick to un**** what apple does to firmware upgrades, and since the handset and version release isn't fragmented, and the Cydia store support developers better than the app store does....there is money in it....and that means there is user and customer support, and quality control.

I think the Droid mod following has the interest, but they also have respect for the The owners who bought android to use it as a billboard don't deserve.. and so they in turn don't respect talented developers. Motorola still uses threats of waranty voids, and google uses lawyers to scare devs into compliance...yet tout 'Open! But you better not package up our free applications in your cooked ROM that runs better than the official rom! Only we can give away free soft ware!'.....and that hurts the Droid user group, but they don't seem to care....as long as google sells, or distributes, more of that free stuff they don't support well, and don't seem to want anyone else to either.

Between apple and HTC/Samsung....If you want a vanilla out of the box experience that works and you aren't really into mobile handsets for more than talking....games, facebook, web browsing and video chat....(FaceTime or many others)....then I would suggest you buy an iPhone........i would also suggest HTC/Samsung Droid handset, (that's not Mot or going thru sprint), or you could get a nokia for free and blow the rest on a hooker and some coke....either choice has consequence, and your experience depends most on how you react to the device, not how the device will respond to how many other devices just like it were sold from 6 am to 730 pm at seven eleven in cities smaller than potucky Alabama on the third tuesday of December. (ref: people who compare OS sales of one company (excluding the other three devices which also run iOS) to HW sales of 3 or more OEM's who license the same OS....but only the numbers for June of....lol just playing!)

Edit: just so you know where I stand, I am an iPhone 4 owner, but I would....without hesitation....jack some drunk dude who was holding the Nexus S and no one else was around to see. It's unfortunate I can't use the 3g running 2.1 as a Dev device, and there isn't a simulator for my situation. Keep in mind that modification of the iOS file system isn't hard, you can't break it to the point it can't be re flashed, and has more options....since the handset is supported by a grip of Devs. I have had android, windows 95, and windows 3.1 running on an iPhone...and app devs and bootrom exploiters don't respect apple, and aren't afraid to defy Apple, because they are committed to You, as a customer. You won't find that at Apple or Google.

OK if your friends are swaping to Android and have old Iphones, try and get one from them if you are on Ipay&pay(AT&T), adn give it a test run

While your response is exactly correct in my opinion, it also missed my less than obvious point.

Ask your friends for a quick tutorial on their phones to provide an opportunity to "use their phone for a few minutes in real world conditions". Seeing things like screen clarity in direct sunlight is something you can't easily do standing in a wireless carriers store or retail location.

I'm impressed with the responses. They are fair and very unbiased. I have used both and the flexibility of Android outweighs the simplicity of the iPhone in my book. Call quality and fewer dropped calls on Android phones is a deal breaker for me. I have many friends that have almost 30% of their iphone calls dropped within 5 minutes. That's not acceptable to me. Android is catching up to iPhone in the games department, but even with better hardware it's not there yet.

All of that said, iTunes integration and simplicity ar the realm of the iPhone. Especially if you are a Mac user. Customization and ease of "tweaking" Android to your liking do lead to a bit less stability than the iPhone.

Smartphones are much better these days than just a few years ago. You will enjoy it no matter which you choose.
