I got my car oil changed at the dealer. Cost was $40.

I got home, and in my email box (crappy Hotmail), was an email from the dealer for oil change for $9.

WTF.

I wish they had never sent me the damn coupon so I wouldn't even know about. Coupon says it had to be presented at time of service, and expires at the end of the month. I'm not going to need an oil change for 3 months.

Goddammit. Why... feel like shit after feeling good for having gotten the car taken care.

Do not EVER get routine maintenance done at a car dealer. They will rape you. $40 is a lot for an oil change. Take it to a smaller garage with a good reputation and you'll save money. Or learn to change it yourself. You can find oil changes for $25 and to me it's not even worth changing my own oil so I stopped doing it.

Also, do not ever buy parts from a dealer unless you absolutely have to have the OEM part! Buying things like tires at a dealership is highway robbery.

I feel you pain brother. I bet if you went back to them with a copy of that email they would honor it and refund you. Did you keep the receipt?

While you are right, $40 is a rip off, not all dealers are rip offs.

I did some tire shopping through Sears, dealers, and smaller garages/mom and pa shops.. the cheapest tire + install for this model ended up being the dealer in a relatively upscale location.

Good dealers will charge you $30 and include an inspection with a written report, check tires wear, top off fluids, sometimes rotate tires, etc... If you know what you are doing, you can get coupons for $15.

I agree about the parts though - they charge a lot for OEMs.

When did you receive the email? You should have presented your phone to them and if that wasn't good enough for them...go to a different dealership.

OR...Call them, tell them you just had an oil change and didn't see the coupon until you got home. Ask them if they will credit you on your next oil change. Business is a constant negotiation and if they are concerned with customer service (as most dealer shops are...cause they ARE overpriced) you may catch a deal. It is only when you agree to blindly pay whatever they want to charge you that you lose. Your ongoing business with them should be more important than $30 so play on that. $40 oil change is nothing...they want you to get your recommended 20,000 mile check-up with tire balance and rotation, new air filter, etc.
