Root [ROM] Onix (TWiz free froyo)

Very similar to obsidian froyo 2.2 but its Twiz free and has more fixes.

Potential Compatibility Issues with numerous programs not yet designed to accept Vibrant on this build number.

Installation Instructions:

Step 1: Disable Voodoo or other Lag Fix -
This is outlined for Voodoo users but applies should you have any other lagfix applied. This step only directly applies to those of you who are currently using the Voodoo lag fix. If you are not currently using Voodoo, please move onto step 3 for final installation instructions. If you are using an ext2 lag fix such as Ryans, you can simply flash on top.

1. Download the attached 'disable-voodoo.zip' flashable deactivator.
2. Load file onto your internal sdcard
3. Reboot into clockwork recovery and select 'install zip from sdcard'.
4. Select 'choose zip from sdcard' and locate the deactivator file.
5. Select the file and flash.
6. Reboot phone and proceed to step 3 of the installation instructions.

Step 2: Nandroid Backup -
Before you perform ANY modifications, you should always perform a nandroid backup. The nandroid backup will allow you to step backwards and restore your previous settings in the event the unthinkable happens. To perform a nandroid please follow these steps.

1. Reboot via Rom Manager to Clockwork Recovery, or use 'adb reboot recovery'.
2. Using the volume up and down keys, highlight nandroid and press the power button to select.
3. Select backup, this will take some time depending on the volume of your data. Be patient!

Step 3: Flash Bionix Obsidian
This is the final step of the installation. This presumes you are already rooted and ready to go. If you are not, then you will need to root and install rom manager first.

1. Download the rom of your choice and place the file onto the root of your internal sdcard.
2. Reboot into Clockwork Recovery.
- From Rom Manager app, select 'boot into clockwork recovery'
- From ADB, type 'adb reboot recovery'.
3. From the main clockwork recovery menu, use the 'down' volume control to scroll to 'install zip from sdcard'. Press the power button. this will take you to a second menu screen.
4. From thet second menu screen, scroll to 'choose zip from sdcard' and select with the power button.
5. Scroll to the file name of the rom you downloaded and press the power button. It will ask you to confirm your choice, select 'yes' and the rom will begin to flash. DO NOT TURN OFF YOUR PHONE DURING THIS PROCESS!
6. Once the flash is complete, select 'go back'. Now select 'reboot' from this menu.
7. Allow your phone to reboot completely. The first boot will take a few minutes, please be patient.
8. Once booted into the home screen, please allow your phone to sit for 5-10 minutes to allow all boot procedures to take place. Keep in mind, you've just heavily modified your device, it needs time to adjust to the new changes.
9. Wait roughly 15 minutes after the first initial boot and then restart your phone one time. You may do this by holding the 'power button' and selecting either shut down or reboot.
10. At this point, if you are running an overclock kernel, you will need to download setcpu and adjust your clock speeds. You need to be sure your minimum clock speed is set to 200mhz. Optimal settings are 200/1200.

This release is based solely on the JK2 build. Kernel, Modem, and all system files were derived from that ROM by Team Whiskey. This is in no way a kang or copy of any othe work done or being done at this time.

Per the sources wishes, the unmodified dump is not currently available. It will be in the future, but unfortunately that was a condition of our acquiring said version.

im bummed I was thinking I could watch hulu now that I have flash... no dice... watched some strongbad clips tho... its cool having a fully working froyo rom. and its pretty fast to... less glitchy than my fusion was also... weird.

It's not a matter of the phone not being able to handle it, Hulu just blocks anything that isn't a PC/Mac :-/


I think they even made it so that the PS3's browser won't work, either. (Don't have a PS3, so can't be 100% sure)

I keep flashing between this and the Obsidian one. I just am finding the Onyx to be to dark to read.

I must say though the battery life is sick on both. I even have my auto brightness on and suffer no ill effects. My phone is sitting at 72 percent battery right now and been unplugged since 7pm yesterday

With the stock browser you look like a mobile device to web sites but what about Skyfire Browser? you can change the setting from mobile to PC.??? thats how I get full web page view by default.

This may be a dumb question.. but is there a lag fix applied to the onyx rom? Or is it safe to run RZAs OCLF? I guess I asked two questions actually haha are they both equally dumb?.. I'm still not sure

Hulu isn't concerned about the browser setting, Flash, or any of that.

It checks the ID of the device itself. Unless it shows up on the list of "authorised" devices, the content is blocked.


Skyfire's Desktop mode is basically so that non-mobile versions of sites load up by default.

*sigh* Back to Fusion 1.2 w/Core & Voodoo for the time being. The latest 2.2 ROM's show great promise of course, but they still don't match what I've got with Fusion. The troubles with the SD cards were the last straw. Of course I'll be keeping an eye on things.

You are currently running stock JI6? You won't have any problem flashing Fusion on top of the stock ROM. Fusion will wipe the caches and apps + data but will not wipe your SD cards. Even so, you should always back up first! Titanium Backup is the preferred app for backing up apps and their data. If you have important data on either/both SD card(s) you can make manual backups as well by simply connecting your phone to your computer and using drag/drop to save to your PC/Mac/whatever.

I've yet to lose anything when flashing a ROM (though using Odin and checking "repartition" will wipe everything on the internal SD card).

If you use Titanium and do a restore after flashing do not restore system data. It will cause problems. Use it for restoring apps + data only and you'll be better off.

Proceed with care if you've never flashed a custom ROM before. Better to ask questions first if you have any. There are plenty of folks out here willing to assist.

I noticed that you are running the Onyx R4.

How's that rom working compared to the fusion 1.2 you had before?

I flashed the fusion 1.2 Stock and it made a major difference for my phone.
like a new different phone.

Battery life is better than Samsung JDF/JI6 stock. My GPS is better than ever.
