a local asian phone store just offered me the ultimate deal. They canceled my 2year contract after having it for a year and 1 month, signed me up for a new tmobile family plan and gave me the 16GB white iPhone(unlocked) for free. I had to take them up on the offer.

I will return to you when you can give me a better handset choice than the ultimately disappointing G1 :(

much love,
HTC.

Haha, I forgot a phone with no A2DP, copy and paste, MMS, video recording, voice guided navigation, applications running in the background or hardware keyboard was better than the G1. Your decision to make, but I'd rather not pay $100 for an SDK just to have my application denied for no apparent reason. When I was talking to my girlfriend a few days ago on AIM, she was on her iPod touch, I sent her a link and she couldn't click it because the browser and AIM couldn't be open at the same time... And she couldn't even copy it for after she closed the application because it has no copy and paste... That's when I realized, an iPhone would never work for me. Hopefully it goes better for you.

not to mention that iPhone says they will never allow flash ....
speaking of flash
i think you should have more faith.. its a-comin...

Be prepared to fight against my sarcastic and dry humour. Then make me your king.

Current To-Do List:
-Study Android SDK
-????? .................................... That was to get the iPhone :)
-Profit.
-Plan for world domination.

might as well not buy the G2 when it comes out because you'll hear news about a G3.. which by then you shouldn't buy a G3 because you'll hear about the G4...

o.o......
Maybe HTC will be waiting for a G7 or an iPhone 4G.... anything is possible ...

Um as much as I like my G1 and have no interest in the Iphone can you point out to me where these are currently on the G1?

Buggered if I can find them?

A2DP and video recording are coming with the cupcake update within the month, and voice-guided navigation is currently in development. This is within 2 1/2 months of the phone's release, iPhone has been around for a year and a half, iPhone 3G for like 6 months, and there are no signs of any of these features. Here's a link to the FREE voice guided navigation that's being put together:

Check and mate.

Google isn't fooling around with Android. Flash is being built for Android from the sounds of it, too. It's really just giving Google and partners time to get stuff out the door.

I'm bothered more by the fact that 3G is not being built up faster by TMO.

Yes I know thats why I said currently, we can't currently do some of those items either. Most of the things mentioned could also be added to the iphone as well, thats the whole point. What isn't here today doesn't necessarily mean it wont be in the future.

Length of time to develop holds no interest to me as long as they get it right. Open source will always receive more support as more people are prepared to develop.

At the end of the day why were these things missed at the start, it's not like they are new. I just don't get why people feel the need to compare and contrast (and thats the polite way to put cock waving) with the iphone all the time.

I like my G1, I really do but I don't feel the need to poke my tongue out at others who don't have certain features. (By the way my N82 even without touch screen still pees over both)

I'm just not 100% convinced about Cupcake yet. I really do think some are going to be disappointed, I still get the feeling we may get a cutdown version of it but the real Update is for newer handsets in the pipeline, but that is all just my thoughts on it and I hope I am proved wrong.

That's the problem, Apple has already said they won't add MMS or video recording, and when you can't run multiple apps at the same time how do you think you're going to use voice guided navigation and take a phone call? The iPhone has been around for a year and a half, A YEAR AND A HALF and hasn't gotten flash. Android has been around for 2 months, and has working flash demo'd and soon to release.

So what you said, "Length of time to develop holds no interest to me as long as they get it right," that doesn't apply to this comparison. Apple has proven that they won't get it right, because they don't feel they need to. Hell, it was the best selling smartphone in 2008 even with all of these restrictions, so maybe they're right. I bought my girlfriend an iPhone, and I really do think it's a wonderful phone, but I'm too much of a "power user" to just skip over the lack of basic features. I'm glad you can overlook these, and I hope you enjoy the phone for what it is.

And? I'm not interested in Apple, thats the whole point, If I was I would have an iPhone. I'm not interested in what features we have that the iPhone doesn't but until we get them again what is the difference between what I originally said and now? Nothing thats what because CURRENTLY we don't have the features I quoted earlier either.

My comment about the length of time to develop is based around the longevity of the platform. being open sourced is a good thing because it means that just about anyone can dip in and develop but rush it and it becomes a joke.

I jumped on the Symbian bandwagon at the start and it has taken around 6 years to date from when I had my first one for it to develop to where it is and it's still not perfect but year on year it gets better and better. Symbian have realised now though that they have to go open sourced if they want to continue to grow due to the fact that Google with Android have done it from the start.

Flash, A2DP, Voice Navigation etc are nice touches but are already available on other platforms in various states so it's nothing new and won't set the G1 apart from anything for the foreseeable future and as for MMS it's old old old news and again in my opinon not needed when you have email available. I'm surprised people having been moaning about a front facing camera for video calling, I mean lets go the whole hog here and rave about all the features that are already currently available but the G1 doesn't have.

I hope that the Android platform does continue to grow because I really do think it can be something powerful but I want it to be done properly and not rushed so no I don't mind how long it takes for them to develop becuase I would rather it was taken seriously and not taken as a joke. the G1 was the early adopters, lets get it out here handset. the phone doesn't matter anymore we have had our taste of it and liked it. what they add to the G1 now is of no significance it's what they do with what they have learned now and add to future handsets that counts.

And this

So what you said, "Length of time to develop holds no interest to me as long as they get it right," that doesn't apply to this comparison. Apple has proven that they won't get it right, because they don't feel they need to

They can't prove they wouldn't get it right if they don't try in the first place, it's impossible to prove or disprove something if you don't try???? so that argument doesn't even hold water. You can get an MMS application for the iPhone but Apple chose to use email for everything which as I have already pointed out makes sense to me.

NOOO!!! You have joined the dark side! :) Just kidding, im gonna miss yah HTC. You and i have the same sarcastic dry humor...Be sure to chime in from time to time...promise? :-D

I'll be back.. later this year. Will probably end up getting a different android phone in 2009 when my iphone mysteriously dissapears/breaks/demolished/exploded like the others.

and lemme clear up some things I guess:

I love android. but the G1 is just a bit blah as a whole. If you overlook the fact that G1 is the first phone to have android, if HTC released the G1 with windows mobile, alot of people will simply not even bother. I guess what i'm trying to say is, the G1 design was a bit bland compared to their other handsets. I would love a Touch HD, Touch Pro, or their new Max4g with android on it. *snap snap* get to it, HTC.

plus, I'll let android develop itself some more. So when I eventually go back to it in the future.. it'll blow me out of the waters.

Ok I'm not going to read the whole thing, but as for this part... I didn't say they couldn't get it right, I said they WON'T get it right. Won't because they don't try, what are you talking about? Someone can "not get it right" because they don't try to do it at all.

Sounds good, and I kinda agree with you with the G1 but I kind of don't. It's the only phone out there besides Storm and iPhone with a capacitive screen, so for my own personal reasons it'd get my attention. I believe every screen of every phone should be capacitive, I'm so tired of this outdated resistive technology. Either way, I think there are better phones you could've gone with even if not the G1, but that's all up to you. Take care.

Edit: Wrote Bold first time, meant Storm.

I completely understand. I also dont like the G1 hardware, but i cant say the same for the Android OS. i simply love it. now only if we can Android on iphone...best of both worlds :)

Personally I think the G1 hardware and the Android OS are both great. Having a slider keyboard + touch screen + trackball + accelerometer + compass provides for every type of input you could ever want.

My only complaints with the OS right now is that you only get 3 screens to put icons on the desktop (plus folders, but sliding between screens is generally a little faster).

For a 1.0 release, Android + G1 are great. Can't wait to see what the future holds.

What i meant to say is the build quality of the phone isnt the best. The hardware specs sound great on paper.

In other words, you're dumping the G1 primarily because of aesthetic considerations. In terms of internal hardware specifications, the G1 is comparable if not superior to all of the other phones you mentioned. The Touch Pro in particular is practically the same device but with a shiny finish. Whoop-de-do.

I don't know about yours, but my smartphone is a tool, not a fashion accessory.

Honestly man I agree with you but you just can't knock people who are at least willing to try android... He had an iphone before his g1 so the g1 was good enough for him to leave apple but not polished enough to make him stay... now consider the g2 coming soon and cupcake update I'm sure he'll have doubts about having gone back to apple... but like I said I won't knock anyone who is willing to try something before making a choice weather or not I agree with it is a different story...

He didn't say he was ditching his G1 because Android isn't polished enough. He's leaving, he claims, because the handset design isn't pretty enough for him.

That's his prerogative, of course, but it's nevertheless a stupid reason to abandon what is otherwise a superb device for one that is, in my opinion, inferior.

Umm that is what I said and I was referring to the phone when I said polished not the op ... you must have miss understood my statement... Also pointed out that the G2 aka HTC Sapphire is coming out soon.... it is more polished and without a keyboard like the iphone... but I do agree that Android and the g1 are superior and will soon start to flex their muscles to prove it.... 2 years from now when android and the future versions of the g1 have had a chance to develope people will finally stop comparing the two as it is now they can't be compared but people still do because of the orginal launch of the iphone....

The G1s hardware is excellent (excepy battery), the android OS is good, but the merging of the two hasn't been done right.

No video recording
No saving applications to Sd
No bluetooth file transfer etc
No flash
No option of onscreen keyboard.

I expected all of these basic things on the G1, currently im not happy with the phone either, however, id be less happy with an iphone, the iphone is all about looks, its the only thing its got going for it.

Theres no point using cupcake in the arguement either, its not here still, and who knows how many of these basic needs will be fulfilled. I have a feelimg flash support is still a looooooooooooong way off from release, and its the thing i want most.

I have a question, does the windows mobile OS have flash yet?

Not to knock you man but you can already run the latest build of cupcake I am messing with it on the emulator and it adds a2dp video and a few other things like animation but you are correct in no exact release date but from the looks of it soon...check it out for yourself if you'd like....as far as flash everyone goes round and round about it but it's up to adobe....
