Another Iphoner to Droid

Hey everyone. I'm new to these parts and just need a bit of advise.
I currently have an iphone 3g and have been pretty happy with it until recently. Lately the phone just seems to be slow and has been messing up a lot lately. I also have gotten pretty bored with it.
A friend of mine just got a droid 2 and I think android is the next os for me. The only problem is that I am stuck on At&t because I'm on a family plan. So my best option would be the captivate. I have messed with the phone in the store and it seems to be pretty nice but after reading a bit I'm a little on the fence.
Is there any other android phones coming to at&t anytime soon? I really like the big screen of the captivate but I'm just not sure about the samsung devise. The HTC aria seems to be alright but to small for my liking and honestly I'd rather have a bigger processor and screen.

A friend of mine at work has the captivated and I have to say it is a really good phone to own I do not know what you have read about it but to be that turned off to look at the Aria must have been really bad. I personally like the device and think its really good especially with swype and movie rental from Samsung it makes it even more of an attractive option.

I think the Android port for the iPhone was built for the 3GS.

To date I think the main reason why there have only been a few Android phones on AT&T is so AT&T doesn't piss off Apple. Unfortunately Mr. Jobs seems to believe that all Android is good for is Pron.

Love my captivate. GPS works OK too after the update. All problems and issues get air out in the forums... so naturally there are a lot of negativity in some threads. The captivate is a really good phone.

There was a beta (or alpha). Last I checked it couldn't make calls out and drained your battery within hours. Needless to say it was a work in progress and (again, last I checked) more of a proof of concept than anything truly working and available to the masses. I would have loved to get my hands on the OS before actually thinking jumping ship for an authentic android handset though!

I think like the iPhone4, the Captivate had a few issues out of the gate that got blown way out of proportion. My son has one and my best friend just ordered his. I'd own one two if my wife would let me have two cool phones, but I'm not willing to get rid of my Nexus.

It is a very good point about small problems getting blown out of proportion on forums. I am definitely leaning on picking up the captivate in a few days.
I'm glad to hear that the gps has been improved. I don't use gps to often but it is nice when I get lost. Haha.
I guess my biggest worry is signing a 2 year contract and then some amazing new phone comes out shortly after. But I guess that's always going be the case with technology these days.

Some amazing new phone is ALWAYS just over the horizon. If you wait for it, you'll be waiting forever. I've been on AT&T for years, and for my area the service is decent, so I don't have any reason to change. I can tell you that although they extend the contract to 2 years, the upgrade options have been coming quicker. They "say" two years but if you check online it might be more like 18 months or, at times i can upgrade after only a year.

I would go captivate, depending on where you live because of ATT disparate coverage. It sucks that you are going to lose your unlimited Data plan though. the 3G is pretty crappy in comparison to pretty much anything there is today.

Have you thought about installing froyo on your iPhone?

it had issues with the wifi firmware, but its fixed. it can be installed OTA. No technical expertise required.

I had it jailbroken and the phone took FOREVER to even open Cydia, let alone navigate through it. So my biggest reason I guess for upgrading is I would just like a device that was quicker and can multitask.

As far as loosing my unlimited data plan the guy at the AT&T store told me that as long as I keep the data plan on a new devise (captivate) then I would still have my grandfathered unlimited data. The guy seemed new, so can anyone confirm this as this would be a huge decision point on what to do?

That's great news. Thank you for the help. It's a bit overwhelming when first looking at something completely new and you all have been a great help. I'm glad I found this place. I think Monday I may go pick up the Captivate.

Something else major that is pushing me towards the Captivate over the iphone 4 is the fact that I can get AT&T insurance plan on it, which is unavilable for the iphones. It was terrible thinking that if my iphone fell and broke or got wet (which we all know is pretty common with something that most people keep on them 98% of the time) that I would be completely screwed. At least with the insurance plan the device will be replaced even if there is a deductible.

The problem is your 3g phone is 2 years old of course it's going to be slow and messing up. My Droid Eris is slow and messing up also but I am waiting till January to update our phones. Might get another droid a iPhone or windows phone.

The point is any two year old phone is going to seem slow to the new phones.

That is definitely a good point. Don't get me wrong, my 3g has been a great phone. I realize that it is old hardware with newer software and the old phone just can't keep up. I guess that's the biggest issue and why I want a new devise. I am a bit bored with ios as well.

Gobbles... I also had an iPhone 3G. With 4.0 version, it became literally useless, to the point of wanting to throw it against the wall several times. iOS 4.1 came out and it ran a little better on the 3G but still slow. I read that 4.2 will improve the performance a little more on the 3G.

Anyway, put the 3G on EBay with buy-it-now for $200 (excellent condition) and it was sold within the hour. Went out and got my Captivate... been a happy camper ever since.

Haha, I know exactly how you feel when you say you wanted to throw it against the wall. That happens to me almost daily since 4.x came out. Hopefully 4.2 helps it like you say, although hopefully the phone will be long gone soon. I'm glad to here you also came from an iphone and are happy with the captivate. And thanks for the tip about selling it. Did you jailbreak and unlock your iphone before you sold it or did you just sell it with normal ios?

I did jailbreak and unlocked it with 3.1.2 but lost visual voicemail as well as phone became quite a bit unreliable (even more dropped calls than usual as well as missing calls, etc.)

For 4.x I did not jailbreak and sold it as is. $200 listed and was gone in a flash (3G 8GB)

Note though that going from iOS to Android was a shock to me at first since I had been using the iPhone for 2 years. It's a bit similar to going from Yahoo Mail to GMail. Google just does things differently but once you are used to it, it makes total sense as to why they do things this way and that.

It took me a good two weeks to get used to Android and its ways of doing things. But now I would never go back. Customizations and widgets are way too cool. I view iOS/iPhone as having a very boring UI now.

Cool, thanks for all the help. It will definitely help to be able to sell my iphone for what the captivate costs. I have had my 3g for 2 years as well so I'm sure I'll have some learning to but I'm ready for it. Iphone is certainly boring. Time for some excitement.

Wow....2 weeks to get used to Android from a former iPhone user....but the way you hear some ppl tell it....you need 2 owners manuals just to use Android...

I understand going from one OS to another there will always be a learning curve. Its just good to hear a former iPhone user say this..

Either Android isnt all that complicated to learn, use....or you are one of the Super Smart Egg head iPhone users...

No I am just a regular joe... and I didn't even sleep at the Holiday Inn Express during those two weeks.

The first week was pretty frustrating but I saw it as muscle memory from the 2 yrs on iPhone. There were times in that first week that I was asking myself why switch. Now I would never go back!

Do you mean that is how long before things like opening a text, making a call, etc. became second nature? Or were you literally sitting there reading manuals about how to open a web browser, download an app, etc.?
