Android rumor report: Nexus One to cost $199 – Android and Me / Google to sell Nexus One with T-Mobile contract? January 5th launch date? - Android and Me

ABC News (I would say a trusted source) is saying that the Nexus may be released as early as January 5th. Android&Me is saying $199 (subsidized by Google), with the rest being paid by advertisers.

Sounds good to me. Thoughts?

If ABC is right then its not very revolutionary. Its a cell phone on a carrier for $199. Outside of all VOIP, which is irrelevant on a Tmobile plan, there's nothing revolutionary about the phone and will be met by HTC's offering.

Unfortunately Google phone will = FLOP just as the first 2 developer handsets were. I dont get the whole google plans to get the device into as many consumers hands as possible.... Tmo's 3G map is 1/5 of AT&T. The handset is sort of Blah looking and the sample photos from the camera are pretty bad, i would say they should be at least as good as the Eris but the ones that have come out so far are worse. Android without Sense just pretty much sucks, it's like winmo deluxe.

I really wonder if it is just idiots running the whole thing. HD2 (4.3 screen with form factor thinner than iphone and a tad wider, hardware send/end keys with android + sense (fix cut and paste) 720P recording and it is game over for all other handsets.

Honestly if I were a sales rep and a factory rep handed me the nexus one and told me it was "the handset" I would go rochambeau on the muthafuka.

To be fair the developer phones were not meant to be retail successes.
Yeah, no Tmobile 3G where I live (only the state capitol). Verizon, Sprint, and ATT yes.
But to make it successful they will have to offer something revolutionary and a $200 phone on a tmobile plan thats a little different looking then the Moto Droid and wont have software better then the Eris after Q1 isn't that revolutionary.

G1 and myTouch were plauged by a slow CPU. The Snapdragon should fix all of that. T-Mobile is expanding it's 3G markets everyday, and is expected to roll out HSPA (7.2 Mbps download) by the end of the year. They aren't that small anymore.

Asthetics are a personal choice. I really dig the look of the device. Nice, clean and simple. Not crammed for space like the Behold II. And I'd rather have a phone with a 3.7" screen running Android than a WinMo phone with a 4.3" screen. It's all personal taste.

I don't know what G1 devices you have seen, but mine is much faster than every other Android device I have put it up against. Yes my G1 is rooted and that does increase speed, I also clear the cache every so often and that keeps the speed up where it belongs.

I think with the specs that have been released, that the Nexus One will be the only Android device that can beat the G1.b

I'm on Verizon but off contract so it doesnt really bother me, I can cancel my line tomorrow for just a phone call and go to Tmobile. Did you hear anything from Verizon or Motorola about the Droid a month before it's release? If I remember correctly, it was officially shown off only a week before it's official launch. Remember that countdown on Google that ends on New Years? That's roughly a week away from a January 5th release date.

Its possible they'll announce it on the first, though thats not a heck of alot of lead time for this type of launch if its a go on the 5th. Then again I'm more concerned about HTC then Google.

Announced October 28th, 2009. Announced 9 days before it's launch. While still a shorter amount of time, it's not unheard of.

Except the 1st is a friday and a holiday so how many people will be listening to the news? Weekend is a slow news cycle so really just Monday the 4th. Where as the Droid was announced on a Wed and launched on a Friday. Nothing released so far has been making good business sense. Small network, small lead time, all VOIP but subsidized via calling plan, nothing really special thats exclusive to the phone it seems. For something so revolutionary, I am extremely underwhelmed. Thats why I still think Nexus One is the dev phone version of the Passion (aka Dragon) and you'll see the Passion on Tmobile and PassionC on Verizon.

Its thinner than the droid, lighter, only 4mm taller and only 7mm wider and it doesnt have a screen that slides open in your pocket. Just the sliding open added almost 25 mm in width to lower my pocket-ability on the droid. To me the thinness and weight make much more of a difference in pocket-ability than the minimal increase in W & H.

But if you look at page 7 of the FCC report the Nexus One will only handle HSPA downloads up to 7.2 Mbps (FAIL!)

Seriously. 7.2 Mbps is fast enough. That's the exact same speed as my home connection.

Yea, 7.2 is more than fast enough. I just find it amusing that the Nexus One is "game changing", but it's still behind the curve in this area, at least.

Nothing about the Nexus One, as it's currently being reported, is "game changing." Unless the $199 price tag is for the unlocked, no contract version and it also does VoIP. Unfortunately, as it's rumored, it's just another google phone on T-Mo, like the G1 and the MyTouch 3G that came before, albeit with snapdragon on board.

I generally wear a nice pair of slacks to the office or a sufficiently roomy pair of jeans in the evenings and on weekends, not baggy but roomy enough that my pocket would have no problem accommodating a phone of this size. I'm not into the "skinny jeans" thing, some of these guys look like they're gonna catch a yeast infection, your jeans should not look like a leotard, LMAO!! they already did that in the 70's, I guess what's old is new again.

But back on topic, if people weren't interested, then the HD2 would not even exist, apparently there IS a market for a screen that large. But you're right, they don't have to make the phone, and I don't have to buy their product. We all have a choice and I chose not to get rid of either of my current phones for a "2 increase in real estate......

Don't get me wrong, I would still get the phone. But a game changer? I don't think so. It's just a progressive step up in hardware.
