thinkbroadband.com have made avaialble an android speed tester. I always thought my mobile broadband speeds were bad: now I have confirmation. Both upload and download were 0.02mbps. (My wifi speed was, as I expected, my normal 9mbps.) Mobile broadband is really poor - hardly useable.

I have been using xtremelabs speed test for some time and as you can imagine speeds vary quite a lot from place to place and time to time. I achived my fastest ever 3G on Saturday:

1.63 mbs down
0.16 mbs up

As I said this is my best ever but download of 1 mbs is not uncommon with a good 3G or H connection.

I am using an unbranded 2.2 desire on Orange in the UK

It may help if you say what network you are on, with tmobile you can get a faster speed if they know you are using an android handset.

Im on 3uk and downloads are around 2.2mb and uploads 1.5mb all day every day and i live out in the sticks

Check...

• Your not being limited speedwise like tmobile do
• Sounds obvious but that you are receiving 3G or HSDPA signal and not G/ are in a signal area that receives these.
• Your sim is 3G / HSDPA compatible
• You don't have 3g / hsdpa disabled in the phones apn / network settings.

I used the speedtester.net app. Am on T-mobile in York (HSDPA full signal):
Download: 1.55 Mbps
Upload: 0.48 Mbps

Usually fast enough for me, buffers occasionally on youtube, but generally fine even on high quality.

My download speed is 0.30 Mbps and my upload speed is 0.14 Mbps on H full signal.

So when I call T-Mobile, all I need to do is ask whether or not my Sim card is eligible for fast speeds and ask if they knew that I have an Android phone?

I would really like to get speads of >1 Mbps because the internet is generally slow and I'd love to be able to speed it up.

Small sample size but it is interesting that the 2 O2 customers who have posted above are both getting speeds of 4+ Mbs the one 3 customer is 2.2Mbs but none of the Orange or TMob customers have reported anything much above 1.8.
I know O2 have "relatively" poor coverage but where they do have it they really seem to be delivering despite all those Iphones hogging the bandwidth!

Don't forget location will probably play a massive part in speeds achieved, not many people have disclosed this unfortunately. As, i suspect, people near London will probably get better speeds (as the infrastructure will probably receive more frequent upgrades), than people in more remote locations.

True - cities obviously always have the best signal. They follow pretty much the same pattern for all networks.

- City / City Centre - HSDPA / 3G
- Outskirts - Inconsistent Patches of ^^ or Edge
- Countryside - G

Although i'm not sure about the london comment. I suppose it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect it to be the fastest, but i'm up in scotland and its fine for me

How does O2 have "relatively poor" coverage? Compared to orange and 3 and tmobile I regard it as excellent.
