Another one :)

This is a universal method that works for the following phones.

HTC G2 (T-Mobile G2/HTC Vision)
HTC Desire Z
HTC Desire HD
HTC MyTouch 4G (T-Mobile MyTouch 4G)

This gives persistent root access even after reboot. No video yet, but will add it ASAP

UPDATE:

Ok, finally got a G2 in my hands and redid the Temp Root and Perm Root procedures and added videos. Tested them myself so now they definitely work :)

They have to do the Temp Root procedure first, and then the Perm Root procedure. After that they'll be permanently rooted with S-OFF and ready to flash a recovery image and then ROMs (doing that video as we speak).

Temp Root - http://theunlockr.com/2010/10/20/how-to-root-the-t-mobile-g2-htc-vision-visionary-method/

Perm Root - http://theunlockr.com/2010/11/30/how-to-gain-permanent-root-and-s-off-on-the-t-mobile-g2-htc-vision/

Let me know if that helps!

HOW TO FLASH A RECOVERY IMAGE & LOAD A CUSTOM ROM:

Here's how to flash a recovery image and load a ROM on the G2 (to be done after theyve done temp root and permroot).

Just to be clear, when they say "persistent root" that means the same thing as "permanent root"? Sorry for the noob question.

Also, how many people have successfully followed the unlocker's instructions exactly? Have never rooted a phone before and want to make sure it works good before I attempt anything.

I've jailbroke and iphone before but never an android phone. I folowed above link instructions , and rooted G2 -

however. i thought Visionery was temp root and only became perm once some addiotional hacking was done. I got to about instrcution 6 maybe where it says re-open visionery and click on Attempt Perm Root.

I never had this option in visionery and the step before just simply perm rooted the phone. I've rebooted and its still rooted. so it's easier than the instrcutions make out!.. (ps I'm on android 2.2)

Technically, doesn't most of the credit go to scotty2 and the rest of the #g2root team? And doesn't this belong in the All Things Root subforum? /pedant

Personally, I think I'll wait a couple weeks for the kinks to be worked out, so that if I run into any issues I won't be the first. Also, waiting for stable cyanogenmod. :)

Edit: beat me to it on moving to the subforum. XD

Just for the record, I don't own a G2 nor do I know what credit is truly deserved for the rooting of this device (permanent or otherwise).

When I say all credit goes to TheUnlockr...it simply means that I am not trying to take credit for this as I am just the messenger.

done the first part of this, the perm root, then the above link forwards to this... Universal HBoot Security Off (S-OFF) for Use After Visionary Method | TheUnlockr

this is where i got f*cked off.. .. it tells you to set up ADB/drivers and all that,, so i click that link (How To: Set Up ADB/USB Drivers for Android Devices | TheUnlockr) , download all these things and instal mac and reboot and all that , then it says download your phones drivers...NO G2 there!! wasted my time.. I'm a noob and i read everything 3 times, this took me an hour only to get somewhere and discover no G2 drivers.

so as it says not everyone has to do it i skip it. pissed off now.... Then go to FLASH THE S-OFF HBOOT IMAGE. and it refers you to a folder that doesn't exist as i haven't installed that programe due to the drivers not being there. now I'm just totally confused.

i give up.

I had the same damn issue.. i can't get the drivers to work or have the "serial" number show up that they keep talking about.

TheUnlockr said that temp root is working but it appears that permanent root does not. He said he would update asap (this coming week sometime) with workarounds.

Here is the response I received from TheUnlockr:

I can't believe it but pulled off a root successfully! Thanks to the unlockr and everyone else!

Finally I can get a full backup/restore with Titanium Backup Pro....I really wish you didn't have to root the system to be able to get a program like this. Plus I was able to get rid of some junk like Photobucket and Finance.

Next step...flashing a ROM???
