Root Few root questions

I'm currently on 2.2 Froyo with Sense, official update.

I'd like to root my phone and use the stock Froyo 2.2 with no HTC Sense, I'm using LauncherPro at the moment and much prefer it.

Just a few questions before I do it.

I have all my contacts at the moment Synced with Outlook. Is there an App to sync these onto my new Froyo Stock phone once I've done this, seeing as HTC Sync won't work?

Also, if I use the stock Froyo, will that mean I will get Gingerbread OTA when it is released, or will I have to put it on using the same method as putting the Stock Froyo on, hence erasing the whole phone again?

If you're going to be using stock Android (without Sense) then you'd be better off syncing with your Gmail account then you don't have to worry about Outlook

And no, you won't get the OTA as you'll be using a custom ROM

It would be vanilla froyo. Stock froyo on the desire has sense. This is a custom.Rom on the desire so you will not ve able to install ota updates.

1) Sync with your Google account - Settings > Accounts and Sync

Also, once you obtain root access, back up with Titanium Backup(available from the market).


2) If you want vanilla Android, you will have to flash a custom ROM. When Gingerbread is released, it shouldn't take the developers long to get it working on the Desire. I'd say you'd be waiting a few days... You'll have to flash a new ROM, but this isn't hard. Just look at the link below and read up on all the guides, etc...

When I flash the new Gingerbread ROM then over the vsnilla Froyo, will this mean I lose everything again? (Obviously will have most backed up using the APP suggested).

Also when I try to sync contacts with google, I select "Sync Now" and it just flashes green and doesnt actually Sync, anyone got any ideas here? This is the only thing stopping me now from putting on Vanilla Froyo !

Also, the link on XDA above says a root can't be done with the latest OTA Desire update, which I have? is this the case still?

You can back up apps with titanium before upgrading but it may be you have to wipe before installing

Sorry to sound like an idiot but is there a reliable guide around for putting Vanilla Froyo on the latest Desire 2.2 OTA update?

Once rooted you flash it like any other Rom. What Rom youre on now is of no consequence cause you flash over it.

Just root using unrevoked. This gives you custom recovery. Do a nandroid backup.via recover, choose which custom Rom.you want (I recommend defrost) put it on SD then from recovery wipe data and flash Rom.

Data includes settings. HTC sense settings are incompatible with vanilla so best to start from a blank canvass.

Using Defrost 6.0e now with LauncherPro Plus and delighted with it, thanks to danfrance for all the help.

Looking forward now to the next big LauncherPro update and Gingerbread .

I quite liked Sense at the start, but those silly HTC apps like Peep and "Facebook for HTC Sense" did my head in, and after rooting and flashing the new ROM my phone runs faster than ever and I have loads of space for apps.

Only issue I have at the moment is the Contacts app isnt as good as HTC's "People" app, also the phone dialer isn't great.

I prefer both. Contacts works where for me people was hugely buggy.

I like the dialer tabs with log, contacts and dialer.

There are alternatives on the market

Yep using that now its great.

Still preferred the HTC dialer as well though where you type a few letters of the persons name and it brings them up quickly.
