We just got 3G here in Small Town Vietnam. Great except now they can charge us their ridiculous Data rates 3 times faster! Thought is was bad when we had EDGE but way too expensive with 3G. I use DATA THROTTLE to keep my G1 off the data Network most of the day but I connect 4 or 5 times a day to check email and to play around. With 3G that playing around is averaging $7 usd a day! I live on $10 a day here in Vietnam and that's a big expense to me SOOOoooo I am looking for an Auto-Connect WiFi app that will turn on and connect when I walk by a HotSpot. But I have downloaded about 5 apps so far and although they all work when I use them when I put my phone in my pocket it turns off and will not connect. I go under settings and hit the Never Sleep button but they all go to sleep anyway...
What WiFi app will Auto connect when the phone is in my pocket as I walk by different HotSpots ???

So for example Y5 will turn my wifi on automatically when I get home & connect to my home router?
Yes.

I use Y5, haven't heard of wefi yet, but will either connect you automatically to hotspots that you haven't previously connected to?

I don't think Y5 does? Does vanilla Android connect you to unknown networks or just notify you of unknown networks?

If they are known networks, then any of the solutions will automatically connect.

The only thing Y5 really does is turn on your wifi when you are nearing a known wifi network.

It wouldn't use up that much more battery to just leave wifi always on.

Wifi radios nowadays are better on battery. For example, I took the SIM card out of my BF's Captivate but left the phone on, with Wifi on, around midnight on a Monday night. Turned display back on Sunday afternoon. Phone was down to 3%. That's about 136 hours idle on wifi. I can tell you that if I had done that with my WinMo phone, the phone would have been dead the next day. Wifi was a huge battery drainer on that phone. Not so on the Captivate.

Let the Wifi-Naught help you with your wifinautical adventures...

As far as an app that will reliably turn wifi on-off automatically, I haven't found one yet.

I use the following three apps together to always find wifi and make sure which network I'm on.

My main wifi app, Wifi Manager (the one by Kostya Vasilyev)... a wifi on-off widget on your homescreen. Makes life much easier than digging in your phone settings. It is the single app I depend on most.

Wifi Manager

To aid in the wifi hunt, I use this other magic app to pinpoint the hotspot's location in the physical space around me. Used in conjunction with Wifi-Manager and Wefi, I could find data on Saturn if I had to...

Lookator

(works best with Wefi cuz it'll load Wefi's database ;) )
